    1. [NCROBESO] Grover Preston Miller (2 Nov 1876 - 9 Aug 1950)
    2. StephenPearsall
    3. Hi, I am seeking information on Grover Preston Miller and his family. G. P. Miller was born in Robeson County, NC and died in Bulloch County on 9 Aug 1950. His spouse was a Hattie Bullard also from Robeson County, NC. Hattie died 20 Aug 1941 in Bulloch Co, GA. Both are buried in the Hendrix Cemetery in Bulloch County. Her obituary as follows: MRS. G. P. MILLER Mrs. G. P. Miller, age 76, died suddenly at her home near Rocky Ford Wednesday afternnon. Interment will be at the Hendrix cemetery this afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. Besides her husband, she is survived by five daughters and four sons. Source: Bulloch Times and Statesboro News, Statesboro, GA (Thursday, August 21, 1941) The obituary mentions that she had 4 sons and 5 daughters. I do not have an obituary for Gover Preston Miller. His death record in Bulloch County reflects G. P. Miller. Census entries reflect: Preston (1880, Robeson Co, NC) Gilford Miller (1900, Robeson Co, NC); Press Miller (1910, Robeson Co, NC) G. R. Miller (1920, Robeson Co, NC) and Gilford P. Miller (1930, Bulloch Co, GA). Was his first name Grover or Gilford? I have six children all born in Robeson County, NC. Alexander Carl Miller (21 Jan 1896), Lela Miller (3 Dec 1897) , William (Willie) Pope Miller (5 Jul 1900) , Earl Pittman Miller (5 Jan 1902), Bertha Miller (28 Sep 1903) and Mattie Miller (13 Jul 1905). I would like additional information on these families and their descendants. Your assistance is this matter would be greatly appreciated. Stephen Carroll Pearsall

    2. Do you have any idea what year she was born? In my Davis genealogy research, I have "uncovered" a Margaret Catherine Davis, born 1856, daughter of James P Davis, Jr, and have no other information about her although I have much info on her siblings. I would like to know if you find out anything. 3. Jessica, do you have anything on a Beady Hueston, married Angus Wilkinson 12/11/1841? Wilkinson is my tree. Diane Cox drc@dianecox.net -----Original Message----- From: ncrobeso-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ncrobeso-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jessica Bonner Sent: Wednesday, September 06, 2006 10:03 PM To: NCROBESO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [NCROBESO] HOUSTON family of Robeson co. NC I am researching the HOUSTON/HUSTON/HUESTON family of Robeson co. NC. I am descended from John Franklin HOUSTON Jr., who was from Robeson co. NC but moved with his family to Mississippi. In the 1790 Robeson co. NC census, there appears a Daniel HOUSTON with 5 whites males under 16 years of age residing in his household. My John HOUSTON Sr. may be a son of this Daniel HOUSTON. 1840 Robeson co. NC census John Hueston 1 male 10-15: John, Jr. 1 male 15-20: William 1 male 50-60: John, Sr. 1 female 5-10: Emily 1 female 15-20: Charity 1 female 40-50: Chloe In November 1840, a John HOUSTON appears on the Committee for the Robeson co. NC District 39 school board. I believe he may be identical to this John HUESTON. >From the NC Marriage Bonds, the following marriages are recorded: Erick Leggitt HOUSTON, had married Eliza Ann THOMPSON on August 22 1840 in Robeson co. NC. John F. HUESTON, Jr. married Drusilla SMITH on February 22, 1845 in Robeson co. NC. Bondsman was John MOORE. 1850 Robeson co. They must've left NC with his brother John Jr. to move to Smith co. MS. Their son Frank was born in Alabama, so possibly he was born en route or they lived in that state for a time before moving on to Mississippi. 1860 Smith co. MS census HOUSTON, W.S., 34, M, farmer, NC - Mary, 25, F, SC - Frances, 4, M, Ala - Martha, 2, F, MS - Sarah Homper, 16, F, MS I do not know who this Sarah HOMPER is. She might be a relative, but that seems unlikely, since she was born in MS. Probably a boarder or household help. Erick Leggit HOUSTON, the elder brother of John Sr. and William, also moved to Mississippi with his family. Here they are in the 1860 Smith co. I am curious as to the family of Chloe, the wife of John Sr. -- was she a daughter of the William BRITT living with them in the 1850 census? Did Charity and Emily, daughters of John Sr., ever marry and if so, to whom? Who was the John MOORE who was bondsman to John Jr.'s marriage, a cousin perhaps? And who were the BRILEY women and Sarah HOMPER who resided with William's family, and the Catherine and Panel SMITH staying with Erick's family? More relatives perhaps? Both William and Erick named sons Francis -- is this a family name? And the three HOUSTON brothers' middle names: John Franklin, William Starling, and Erick Leggit. 1. Blackburns & Parkers
    2. William J. Parker, ( born around 1820 ), married Nancy Blackburn, ( born around 1825 ). They had George, Julia, Isabella, Elizabeth, Margaret, James D., Bryant, S. C., S. J., and John H. Parker. William and Nancy were listed in the 1850-1870 Bladen Co., N. C. census, but in 1880 they were in Robeson Co., N. C. I don't know what happened to them after that, but some of their children were in Marion Co., S. C. by 1900. Does any one know who the parents of William J. Parker and his wife, Nancy Blackburn, were? Does anyone happen to know when and where William and Nancy died, and where they were buried? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Christie

    1. Murder Of E. C. Sheppard
    2. In March 1923, three men were arrested in Robeson Co., N. C. for the murder of E. C. ( or E. R. ) Sheppard, a lightening rod agent. The men were Luther "Luke" Britt, Francis Marion Huggins, and Dock Rozier. The murder took place near Lumberton. Sheppard's car was found in a creek leading to Lumber River about 3 miles from Lumberton on Fayetteville road. Sheppard's body was found a year later in the woods in Parkton by a boy. The last time Sheppard was seen alive, he had about $8000 on him. According to the July 19, 1923 Dillon Herald, "liquor and the so-called 'country club', an alleged house of ill fame some 7 miles from Lumberton, figured largely in the testimony" at the trial. ( This alleged house of ill fame may have belonged to a Wayland Locklear. ) In July 1923, Luke Britt pled guilty to murder in the 2nd degree and was sentenced to 10 years. The cases against Huggins and Rozier were continued for the next term. This is where the trail goes cold for me. Does anyone have any idea if F. M. Huggins and Dock Rozier were ever found guilty and if they served any jail time. I am specifically interested in F. M. Huggins. Any clues will be appreciated. Thank you, Christie

    1. Rice Cemetery
    2. Chuck Ivey
    3. Does anyone know if there are any records of who may be buried in unmarked graves in the Rice Cemetery? Who maintains the cemetery now? I am looking for the grave, or whereabouts of the grave, of Richard Florence Parker. The North Carolina State Archives has records of her being married to Erastus J (EJ) (Bud) Rice. Bud is buried there along with his second wife. Any information would be deeply appreciated. Chuck Ivey
