Is Harmony Hall Plantation open for tours any other time? If you do the Christmas Celebration again, could you give us about 6 weeks notice so that we can plan to attend? I have to come about 250 miles to make it. We enjoy staying at the Sleepy Bear campground in Lumberton when we come up your way. No, it does not take me 6 weeks to make 250 miles but we do have to make advance plans. I know you will all have a good time and many thanks to the people who have given their time in making this event possible for the enjoyment of others. thanks, betty in ga ----- Original Message ----- From: "sam.west" <sam.west@ncmail.net> To: <NCROBESO@rootsweb.com>; <NCBLADEN@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, December 01, 2006 4:26 PM Subject: [NCROBESO] SATURDAY, DECEMBER 2ND, 2006 > Hi Group, > > EVENTS OF SATURDAY, DECEMBER 2ND, 2006 > > 11:00AM - JACKSON SWAMP CEMETERY, MERCER MILL RD, LUMBERTON, NC > DEDICATION > CEREMONY FOR VETERANS MARKER FOR SIMON ALLEN, CSA VETERAN. > > Saturday, December 2nd, 2006 - 11:00am at Jackson Swamp Cemetery on Mercer > Mill Rd there will be a memorial service and dedication of a military > marker > at the grave of Simon Allen of the 36th Regiment. Trying to find more information on Lizzie Butler that married Hugh Gee Barentine. Lizzie was a daughter of William Riley Butler Sr. and Indiana Rogers. They were all from the Marion/Dillon area. Lizzie was born about 1882. Hugh Gee Barentine was the son of Hugh Gee Barentine Sr. and Margaret Herring. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks Jane Moody Randall
I had a number of Indian relatives who fought in the Civil War, but even more interesting, a number of my relatives were officers in the Revolutionary War. They were in originally Montauks at Long Island, run out by settlers, then joined the Narragansetts in NJ, then run out by settlers, then adopted by the Mohawk nations. They were actually awarded 1800 acres of their own land for their service. ----- Original message ---------------------------------------- From: "Briston Snead" <bsnead@everdreamcorp.com> To: ncrobeso@rootsweb.com Received: 11/27/2006 10:56:16 AM Subject: Re: [NCROBESO] +AFs-NCROBESO+AF0- +ACI-Indian Warriors: TheUntoldStory of the Civil War+ACI- >Please let me know when this show comes on again thank you >-----Original Message----- >From: ncrobeso-bounces@rootsweb.com >[mailto:ncrobeso-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of syntar >Sent: Monday, November 27, 2006 10:50 AM >To: ncrobeso@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [NCROBESO] +AFs-NCROBESO+AF0- +ACI-Indian Warriors: The >UntoldStory of the Civil War+ACI- >Steve, >The program was on Sunday at 7pm. >There was quite a bit on the Lumbees and HBL. Thank you for the information on Jacob and for any additional info on Thomas ALFORD who married Ann WEST. Fran
First of all, for those I've communitcated with before re: the Boones, McKeithens, Pounds, ... I have a new email address. It is now jharley2@suddenlink.net. Thanks. I'm sure there are countless stories circulating about the escapades of Henry Berry Lowery.. but my husband's family has their own personal one. It seems that the Lowry gang kidnapped a young girl named Isabella Boone over in Brusnwick Co.,NC . Isabella lived in the Town Creek area of Brusnwick which isn't far from the swamps and not too far from the Lowry stomping grounds. I have suspected that there is a kinship of some kind I haven't figured out yet. The early Boones were somehow connected to the BERRY family of Brusnwick. One Daniel Berry took in a young orphan named Thomas Boone after his father died. Found in BRUNSWICK CO.,NC Minutes of Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions, Vol. 1, page 157, 1795 , "Upon application the Court agreed that Sarah Boon and Isaac Green be put on the parish and supported out of the poor tax." Page 232 1797, "Ordered that Thomas Boon an orphan lad of about fourteen years of age be Bound as apprentice to Daniell BERRY to learn the occupation of a Mill right till he arrives to the age of Twenty One years, and that the Indenture be Executed before Benjamin Mills, Esqr. Pg. 224 Daniel Berry appt. to patrol between Town Creek and Hoods Creek. (Location 'tip:northern part of county. Early Brunswick County was in 6 Districts: North to South> Northwest, Towncreek, Smithville (Southport's old name), Lockwoods Folly, Waccamaw, & Shallotte. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This Daniel Berry may have been a kinsman of Henry Berry Lowry. Maybe a grandfather. Isabella "Bell" Boone was born 1846, so was probably a young lady when she was kidnapped. They did send a posse of men after her, and did rescue her.. but I do not remember much more . The Berrys of Brusnwick and the Boones of Brunswick may have been neighbors.. but may have been kinsmen too. No proof. Joanne Harley NC
I am a descendant of Jacob Alford, born Dec 12, 1738 in New Kent Co., VA to Lodwick Alford and his wife, Susannah Cade. Jacob and his father migrated to N.C. and Jacob eventually ended up in that part of Bladen that was later Robeson Co., NC where he received a Land Grant April 4, 1764. For those that can lay claim to this couple.. Jacob's wife, Mary Pace's family can be traced back to the early Jamestown Colony where her ancestors were on the third ship that landed there in ca. 1618/19 and settled opposite Jamestown on the southern shore of the James River... which is now Surry Co., VA. Jacob Alford was one of the first members of the county commissioners to arrange for a courthouse for the newly created Robeson County along with John Cade and five others, on 6 Jan 1787. Jacob Alford was a Justice of the Peace in Robeson Co. The House Journal of the General Assembly, 1790 at Fayetteville shows that his resignation was read and sent to the Senate in Dec. 1790. Records of land patents show that Jacob Alford began to enter land in Bladen (part now Robeson) Co. in 1764 which indicate that he removed there about that time, when he was 26 yrs. old. He settled first at Harper's Ferry, later the Lowery Bridge, on Lumber River, (then called Drowning Creek) near the old Lebanon Presbyterian Church and about 2 mi. west of the present R.R. station at Pembroke . According to "AWAY DOWN HOME" by M. Thomas, page 74, " By the act of 1787, Section VI, which created the county, Jacob Alford was among the men appointed to choose a site for the county courthouse and to contract for the erection of that building, a prison, and stocks. Page 67, " In 1788 ...early sources list the members of the county court, which was the governing body of the county, as Jacob Alford, Abraham Barnes, Elias Barnes, and John Willis. Alfordsville, a community in southern Robeson was the site of the Alford family lands. It boasts the second oldest post office in the county where Warren Alford received $2.20 as post master in 1817 and $3.00 in 1818. He remained in charge of the office until 1844 when Sion Alford became postmaster. ("Away Down Home," by Maud Thomas, page 58) ******************************************************************************************************* During the Revolutionary War , Jacob Alford was active in the cause of the Revolution. It is not known whether he was enrolled in a body of troops in the pay of the state, but it is known that he was an active combatant as were many others of that area. He was once captured and held prisoner in an old school house near the present town of Little Rock, SC. Jacob Alford was a member of the House of Commons of the NC General Assembly from Robeson Co., 1791-2 and 1793-5. His grandson, Jacob Alford and his son Warren also served in this capacity at a later time. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sellers' "HISTORY OF MARION COUNTY, SC", pp 282-4, contains an excellent Alford sketch. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bruce Howard's book, "OUR COLONIAL ANCESTORS", page 274, infers that Jacob Alford died about 1796. He says he and Mary had six boys and five girls. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (Note that his will was not recorded until 1826) Source of Alford info in Vol II of "KINFOLKS" by Wiliam Curry Harllee, Page 1449- page 1456+ Page 1452 is the Will of Jacob Alford. It is recorded in Robeson Co., Lumberton, NC, Book of Wills 1, p. 36. I live in Robeson County and these two Lee's sold land to my ancestors. 1798 Benjamin Lee to William Walters Sr 100 acres S of Inman's Branch 1817 Jesse Lee to Joseph Walters 150 acres W of Shelly Bay
The Lee YDNA project on Relative Genetics website has over a hundred participants among whom is a direct male descendant of John Lee of Robeson Co., NC. John Lee's haplogroup is R1b. There is no Joshua Lee yet but there is a descendant of his grandson ? Stephen Lee b. 1770 in NC, d. 30 October 1834 in MS. & his haplogroup is I1a. Therefore as much as we might wish it , John Lee born 1802 in NC doesn't appear to be related to Joshua Lee b. 1706 in VA. unless by marriage to a female descendant. Joshua's haplogroup should be same his grandson's (I1a) I think. John Lee does share some of the same markers & haplogroup as descendants of a Jesse Lee b. c1735, died 1792 in Dinwiddie Co., VA. But we still don't know how they connect. Lets don't get discouraged folks, we'll keep on looking. Marcie Lee
