Note to requestor: These tax lists are unconsistent, if they are anything. . Some lists have no title information, except dates seem to be included on each list. . Some later lists are alphabetical, which can be problematic if you want to determine location of property, identification of neighbors, movement to new property in a different neighborhood, etc. . White women are rarely listed. When they are listed by name it is because they were head of household with underage dependents. White women were not "taxables" so they are not listed generally speaking, at least by name. the 1786 and 1787 lists contain the number of white women in each household. Black women were taxable thus black women are listed, but not by name in the later lists; the earlier lists give names of slaves for a few years. All blacks or "mulattos" were taxable and were listed. Some households appear to be mixed-race households. It is recorded that races intermarried to the annoyance of colonial goverment of the time before the Revolution. . 16 years of age was the legal age until 1784 when legal age became 21 for men and women. If you were of legal age you were a poll and thus were listed. ____ Michael, I'm starting to add the above note to people who request lookups. I won't be doing it for very long because I'm getting a bit overwhelmed! Was there by chance a Margare tLittle on the Alexander Little property, this would be Neil McAlpin's future wife, I had not located her fathers name. Regards, Michael T McAlpin
Found him—right in the area you specify. The reason I know it's in that area is that he is in a list of a neighborhood that contains my own ancestors and I know exactly where they lived. Unfortunately the list only gives the name and value of the person's property. The list itself is not in alphabetical order so it's not unreasonable to assume that those listed near "Neil McCalpin" are his neighbors. Neil McCalpin is listed at a value of 18 pounds, 10 (shillings). His immediate 'neighbors' are Philip Ikner, James Ard, John McCollum on one side, and Alx. Little, James McNeill (my ancestor) and Jas. Biggs on the other side. The only other thing I can say is that Neil McAlpin had very little money compared to his neighbors. I can guess that he lived along the northern arc of the Raft Swamp. which is near Big Marsh. These lands would today be in upper Hoke County, NC, not far from the town of Raeford. Did you know there were McAlpins that lived below Red Springs in Robeson County before the 1830s? No Jacob Miller in either volume. There can be found a few "Meloy" families: Charles Meloy and Daniel Meloy. Both Charles Meloy and Daniel Meloy are listed (among a few others) in a Petition to the court of Bladen county, dated 1782, as having been in a Tory party under the command of Cols. Hector McNeill and Duncan Ray that raided the premises of John Plummer in June 1781 and stole certain articles, the value of which Plummer wished to be reimbursed for. They are found in a second petition, listed along with the same men in the first petition, as having taken a Zachariah Plumer prisoner, wounded and robbed him. These Meloy men are not mentioned in the tax lists, but in the loose papers that were found with the tax lists in the 1980s at Duke University. No version of the name Malloy, Moloy, etc can be found in the indexes. There were, however, Malloy families in the area at that time. The tax lists are not complete; some neighborhoods are missing from year to year. I have both volumes of the Bladen County Tax Lists covering the years 1768-1789. If anyone would like a lookup in these two volumes, let me know. Be aware that there are no Bladen tax lists for the years 1773, 1777, 1780-85, or 1788. A few are in alphabetical order, the others appear to be listed as the tax poller found them living along his route. Steve Edgerton

Looking for information on Alfred Lupo (b. 1829) buried at piney grove baptist church in SC with his wife Martha (should be Rogers.) I am told this is my ancestor. Most of my family lived either in robeson county NC or the Marion SC area or both. Not sure if this is the parent of both Alfred Lupo and Alexander (Sandy) Lupo. --------------------------------- Don't be flakey. Get Yahoo! Mail for Mobile and always stay connected to friends.
I recently purchased Volume I, Bladen County, North Carolina Tax Lists 1768 Through 1774 from heritagebooks.com. The book is newly printed, so there are likely other copies for sale through heritagebooks.com
Fran, I didn't send it to you but I know that it comes from the book "Bladen County, North Carolina Abstracts of Early Deeds 1738-1804" by Holcomb. It is on page 50 of my copy of this book. I HIGHLY recommend this book of abstracted Bladen County deeds to researchers of early Bladen County. Not all deeds were destroyed in the 3 fires that consumed Bladen's deeds over a 130 year period. Also, if you're looking for early tax lists for Bladen, try to find Vol 1 and/or 2 of Byrd's "Bladen County North Carolina Tax Lists"; the first volume is 1768 - 1774 and the second volume is 1775-1789. The originals were found at Duke buried in a private collection. Byrd transcribed them, I understand, and produced the 2 volumes. These lists give us an incredible view of families and their immediate neighbors for 23 years. I've found so much info from these two books. The first volume is almost impossibly hard to find to purchase but you can find the second volume online to buy. Mary Ray, I'm interested in knowing what you know about the Betsy Griffin, 2nd wife. My earliest predecessor was Joseph Griffin from Columbus (at the time Bladen) county. Bladen was later divided into Robeson, Columbus and Bladen counties. I have records of our Joseph having served in the Revolutionary War. Since they were the only Griffins, (to my knowledge)in the area at the time, I have a hunch your Betsy may have been connected in some way to them. Can you add any more to our knowledge of Betsy. Thanks for sharing your records. > [Original Message] > From: Mary Raye Casper <mcasper@twcny.rr.com> > To: <ncrobeso@rootsweb.com> > Date: 1/6/07 11:14:26 PM > Subject: Re: [NCROBESO] NAZARETH MITCHELL > > Sam, > Nazareth Mitchell received a pension for his Revolutionary War > service...Pension #S8897. Sam, Nazareth Mitchell received a pension for his Revolutionary War service...Pension #S8897. The following information is found in his pension record... That he was drafted and first served in a Regiment commanded by Col. Thomas Eaton. That he applied for the pension in Nov. 1832 at the age of 74 years. He stated that he was drafted into the service of the United States as a militia man in Franklin Co., NC on 10 Sept. 1778 for a term of seven months in the command of Capt. Brittan Harris. He furthered stated that he was marched to Kingston on the Neuse River and from there to Elizabeth Town. He then went to Monks Corner and Jacksonboro, SC. From there he stated that he went to "the white House near Savannah River in the state of South Carolina" and then to Chalk(?) Hill, SC. He was then in Augusta, GA and was also engaged in the battle of Briar Creek, GA. He further stated that he was discharged but again drafted for a term of 3 months under the command of Capt. Parish. He marched to Harrisburg, NC where his company joined General Butler. From the Rocky Ford on the Haw River, they marched to Guilford, NC and were engaged in the "Battle of Gilford". From this battle, he was marched to "Ramseys Mills", NC and there remained until he was discharged about 10 May 1781. He stated that he was born in Northampton Co., NC in 1758 but that he had no record of his age. He again stated that he was called into service in the County of Franklin, NC, and that he had lived in Robeson County for about forty five years at the time of his pension application. He named William Townsend Esquire and Lemuel Bullock as persons to whom he was known in his neighborhood who could testify to his character and good behavior and his services as a soldier in the Revolution. Nazareth Mitchell is recognized as a NSDAR patriot. His wives are listed as (1) Susanna Thompson and (2) Betsey Griffin. Nancy Mitchell, wife of Cornelius Jenkins, is also listed as another child of Nazareth Mitchell. Mary
There is a memorial marker to his memory on the Fairgrove Road out from Fairmont. It reads: "NAZARETH MITCHELL BORN NORTHAMPTON COUNTY 1758 SOLDIER IN REVOLUTIONARY WAR 1778 79 AND 1781 FOUGHT IN BATTLES OF BRIAR CREEK AND GUILFORD COURT HOUSE SETTLED NEAR HERE 1787 THE FIRST MITCHELL IN THIS SECTION MARRIED FIRST SUSANNA THOMPSON SECOND ELIZABETH GRIFFIN FATHER OF MILES, HELLEN, ELIAS, HUGH G(?)
