    3. Barbara, It is over towards Pembroke, outside of Lumberton, if memory serves me. It says on Nash's history that it is on Route 4, on the old Lumberton-Red Springs road about 5 miles from Lumberton. I think, but may be wrong, that St Pauls is more northerly from Lumberton. 1. [NCROBESO-L] Rev Elias DAVIS JOHNSON of Raft Swamp and Great Marsh Baptist Churches
    2. Lynn Prettyman
    3. Donna, I hope you don't mind if I answer to the list re: your hopes that I had more info on our grandfather JOHNSON. One of the benefits of having an uncle that is not only a minister, but also a genealogist, is his church histories. In Sept of 1882, Raft Swamp Baptist Church called our grandfather, the Rev Elias DAVIS JOHNSON to be pastor there, and in October he accepted, but before that, he was a founding member of Great Marsh Baptist Church in St Pauls. Uncle Nash wrote a history of Great Swamp in honor of its Centennial year in 1972 and dedicated it to our grandfather and tells us a little bit about him. Here, in part, is what Nash has to say: The Early Beginnings The Great Marsh Baptist Church, located about a mile south of St Pauls, was organized in mid-summer of 1872. The Presbytery to constitute the church included Elder Furney PREVATT, pioneer Robeson County minister, and his son, Elder F. A. PREVATT, and Elder Elias DAVIS JOHNSON. We are told there were 12 men and women of Baptist persuasion who became the first members. The following list was more likely included in this number: Elder Elias DAVIS JOHNSON and his wife, Sarah Caroline HUMPHREY, W. S. JOHNSON, J. H . JOHNSON, J G FISHER and wife, Charity FISHER, Archibald ODUM and his wife, Eliza ODUM, J R BELCH, Solomon BELCH and Wrial (sic) WILLOUGHBY. The site for the first church building and meeting place ( the present location) was donated by Rev Elias DAVIS JOHNSON and Archibald ODUM. Elder Elias D JOHNSON was called as the first pastor following the constitution of the church and the first deacons were Duncan HUMPHREY and J S JOHNSON. Elder JOHNSON served from 1872 until 1884 and from 1886 until his death in 1893 for a period of 21 years. [He served concurrently at Raft Swamp until at least 1891] He was the son of Samuel JOHNSON and Sarah DAVIS of Bladen county. He was born Aug 6, 1828 in the Hickory Grove Baptist Church community of Bladen county and died on Feb 7, 1893, at his home near the Great MARSH Church. He is buried in the Great Marsh Church Cemetery. He had given much of the land for the cemetery and he gave part of the land upon which the church was built and led in the organizing of the church. He was married to Sara Caroline HUMPHREY of the Saddletree Baptist Church Community. At the age of 17 he was baptized into the fellowship of the Hickory Grove Baptist church by a Rev McFALL. He was ordained to the gospel ministry in the year 1855 at Raft Swamp Baptist Church in Robeson County by Elder Furney PREVATT and Rev Isham STONE. His education was limited, but he was apt and quick to learn. As a preacher, he was popular and always had every Sunday engaged during his ministry. He preached in Robeson, Cumberland, Sampson, Bladen and Columbus counties. He was pastor of the Raft Swamp Baptist Church when Robeson Association was organized there in 1882. He was also pastor of Cedar Creek Baptist Church of Cumberland County when the Cedar Creek Association was organized at that church. He was also surveyor and a barrel maker in addition to being one of the largest farmers in Robeson county. He served also as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Lumberton during the Reconstruction years following the Civil War and was also Treasurer of Robeson County. At least seven of his descendants have been leaders in the Great Marsh Church and the First Baptist Church, St Pauls, as well as many other churches throughout the state. I have a copy of a eulogy written by J G FISHER which Uncle Nash gave me, so it might be the same one as you have. Rev FISHER identifies Sarah DAVIS as being sister to the Rev Elias DAVIS and he says Samuel JOHNSON was a Methodist and Sarah was a Baptist. He says that at the time of our grandfather's marriage to Sarah HUMPHREY in 1849 and for some years afterwards, he was not worth any more property than it would take to pay his debts. This is all that I have, Donna. I hope I was able to help you out. For those of you who wonder why I haven't as yet given any of Raft Swamp's history, I'm still thinking about it because of the copyright thing. I haven't heard from anyone yet who thinks I shouldn't, so maybe it will be all right if I do. Lynn [email protected]

    3. Hi, Lois, There is only the one PITMAN name mentioned in with my uncle's history of Duncan Cornelius LOWE. Sally PITMAN, who married Willie PREVATTE, s/o Orpha LOWE and Rabe PREVATTE. (Orpha was the eldest girl and my great grand-aunt.) Uncle Nash doesn't say any more than that. He doesn't have a marriage date for Orpha and Rabe, nor birth dates or wedding dates for their children, nor who the parents of the spouses were. Uncle Nash does cite the following marriages registered in the Deeds office: Thomas LOE and Ellena WATERS on 27 Aug 1816 William HEDGEPETH and Apsley LOE on 2 Nov 1827 with Neill BUIE as witness. Ebenezer HAYS and Amey LOE on 6 Dec 1827, Neill BUIE as witness. Charles BRITT and Charity LOE on 29 April 1826 with Neill BUIE and Stephen LOE as witnesses. James PURVIS and Reedy LOE on 19 July 1830 Duncan Cornelius LOE and Mary SMALL on 15 July 1857, Cornelius LOE witness. William WALTERS and Sarah Ann LOE 15 May 1847 William IVEY and Amelia LOE 28 Dec 1858 William HEDGEPETH, s/o Arthur HEDGEPETH moved to Robeson Co from Edgecomb Co and had a brother also named Arthur. William and Apsey had 10 children., one of whom was Daniel, who married Eliza PURVIS, d/o James PURVIS and Bedie ATKINSON. Eliza PURVIS HEDGEPETH married Jessie FLOWERS after Daniel's death. Daniel and Eliza were the parents of the Rev Ippy PURVIS HEDGEPETH. Duncan Cornelius LOE and Mary SMALL were married by the Rev Elias DAVIS JOHNSON with Cornelius LOE and Thomas A NORMENT as bondsmen. The witness was B FREEMAN. A deed is found in which Cornelius LOE bought land from Alexander McCLEAN. No more PITMAN's, I'm afraid. 2. I'm going to NC. Monday. Can some one tell me the best place to do some research on someone born in around St Pauls? I saw where one of my gggrandfathers was a member of the Raft Swamp church. Do you think i can find a death certificate or something of this nature. Does NC. allow you to get birth certificates? Help. Last time i went to the court house the woman in there was less than helpful.

    2. Hello Doris, This is off the subject of Raft Swamp but I noticed you mentioned your Loe ancestor as believed to be Daniel Loe and Pharaba Pittman. My ancestor in Robeson Co. was Edmond Spivey, Sr. died 1798 and I believe Daniel Loe and Joel Pittman witnessed his will. Do you know if these two men were connected to Edmond Spivey, Sr. in any way and if Joel Pittman was the father of Phataba? It is possible they were just neighbors since Edmond lived on Old Field also. Information is scarce about this Spivey and any thoughts or hints would be appreciated. Thanks. Nula Tingleff

My snail address is; Doris Lindblad Rt. 5, Box 365 Texarkana, TX 75503 I would love to be able to recognize something. My Maranza LOE was born in Lumberton, Robeson Co, in 1820, married to Orren COLLINSWORTH in (possibly) Robeson County. She was the daughter of Stephen P and Beady (Hedgepeth) LOE. Believe Stephen to be son of Daniel and Pharaba (Pittman) LOE. Thanks for your offer of help. Doris

    2. The bestand most accessible quick study I know of for Migration Routes is the map included in Everton's "Handy Book." You can probably find it at most genealogy libraries.

    3. I attended a workshop many years ago and remember that the lecturer said that migration routes could be determined by the main state highway numbers (not secondary or interstate). N.C. # 1, #15, #17, #301, all good examples. And they were all Indian trails before they became roads. Highway #401 was an early stage road according to some history books I've read. Hyw. # 74 is probably the route they took leaving Robeson. Hope this helps. Joanne Harley

    3. Does anyone know the typical migration pattern followed by those from Robeson Co., NC to Tippah Co., MS (N.W. corner of MS by TN border)? Wiley PAUL m. Rebecca Biggs in Robeson Co. He's in 1830 census there, as well. I don't find him until 1840 census in Madison Co., TN. He had about 6 kids listed as being born in NC. Rebecca had died by 1840 & he remarried to Mary McDonnel (of KY). I find them in Tippah by 1850. I was hoping that I could trace the migration patterns to find out possible areas to look for marriage license, etc. Any help appreciated. Best regards. Linda

    3. Hi, I saw your note on the Robeson List. I would love to hear the whole story of Henry Berry Lowrie. I believe this is the man my father told me about that he knew in the 1920's. He used to supplement his income to help his parents by driving a Taxi. He told about a Mr. Lowrie being arrested and then I think he broke out or somehow got out of jail. He got in my father's car and made him take him to either a brother or cousins. Many of the family later became friends with my father. I would love to know if this is the same Mr. Lowrie.
