My 4xgreat grandfather is James Garner/Gardner, son of "Captain" James Garner and Elizabeth Freeman. James "Jr" appears to have been the one who changed the "Garner" spelling to GarDner, as his children used that spelling too but not their cousins. James Jr's daughter Rebecca is my 3xgreat grandmother. James Jr's son Dolphin married Caty Williams, his daughter "Polly" first married James Williams (and eventually was caught up in the infamous "Polly vs Pete" lawsuit after she married Peter Craven), and his son James married Mary Williams (Mary Williams later married Isaac Brady, one of my uncles).
