(Haman Miller appears as a witness on many bonds) It appears that Haman and Jesse Miller were brothers descended from a long line of Haman Millers. Several AWT trees have information on the Haman Miller line. Most interesting seems to be one posted by Ralph Raleigh tracing the family to a Johann Frederick Mueller who migrated from Germany in 1738 -- there are some excellent notes there. For the Ridge family (Abcilla's mother), there are also several trees. It appears that Godfrey Ridge seen in the 1790 census is the first of the family in Randolph County. The Ridge family seems to have come from England to Virginia to North Carolina, though I didn't see any really good notes for Godfrey's ancestry.

Randolph County census... 1850, Emsley is shown as 14, living with Eldridge and Penina. (Ancestry.com index has him incorrectly listed as Emily) 1860 shows Emsley 24, living near Eldridge with Eliza 18 and Mary 1 Emsley spent the war as a musician with the 44th NC Infantry, was captured and eventually released. 1870 has Emsly 30, with Absala 30, Samuel 10, Columbus 8, and Adalade 4 1880 has Emsley 44, with Abcilla 38, Jesse 13, Rebecca 10, Maggie 7, and Oreanna 5 Forsyth County census... 1900 has Emsley 64, Abcilla 58, Nettie 26, and Maggie Hobbs 10 (grandchild), plus 4 boarders and a cook. (Ancestry has this incorrectly indexed as Coster) Columbus and his descendants can then be seen in the 1900 through 1930 records for Forsyth. I suspect that Nettie was a nickname for Oreanna. The Margaret you have listed would presumably be Maggie in 1880. Abcilla as a nickname for Emsley's wife seems to make the most sense. Unless something unusual happened during the 1860s (deaths, divorce, adoptions), there doesn't seem to be any room for a second wife. Anyway, sorry to run around in circles "proving" what you already know. I'll poke around the Millers a bit and see if anything turns up on Abcilla. Email me directly if you'd like to compare notes on Eldridge and his wives. I'm most interested in the Lassiters, since that's our line, but the Woods are of interest too because they're also associated with Newton and Willis Carter, apparently brothers or cousins of Eldridge. And no, I'm not LDS myself. I just take advantage of the genealogical resources they make available to the public.
I can tell you the area Tidence Lane lived it being the eastern section of Randolph Co near the Cravens , The Moffitts , also Carr , Caveness , The list goes on I found it helpful to pinpoint the area where my ancestor lived , what creek near what town , sometimes it is the only way to look at a land record and know , this should be my ancestor as it is near such and such a creek where my ancestor lived , It helps to attribute certain records to a certain family member and if it is an area across the county from where ones family was it is probably a different family . this is helpful when one has a common name like James Jones you may have three in a county and only one is yours . I was given to me by one of my aunts( Flora Carter) She was married to Elwood. She called one of Elwood's aunts and got the information from her. Columbus Edward Carter was 14 Apr.1866 in Randolph Co. He married Alice Reed on 6 Nov. 1890. He died 23 Dec 1950. Alice Reed is from the Reid line of Old Salem. Their children were Gray Edward, Samuel, John, Allen, Mary, Edith, Edna, Helen and Eldridge. If you would like their dates I will send them to you. Emsley's children I have listed as Columbus Edward, Margaret and Nettie. These are total different from the 1880 census record. What I am thinking may have happened was these 3 children are much older and had left home by the 1880 census. I have not yet added the ones from the census. I got these names from my aunt. Do you think this is possible? I am Reid Edward daughter. If you don't mind I personal question, are you LDS?
I am looking for any mention perhaps as a witness or something for a William Poe . lived around Brush Creek probably just across line in Chatham Co I know he has signed for The Moon family he also signed as a witness for a man named onstat and also Masser deed he signed as a witness. When you asked about Abcilla, I went back and looked through the census again and the entries just make no sense. From 1930 back to 1900, you can easily follow Clyde to Gray to Columbus, all in Forsyth County. Skipping back to 1880, Columbus is nowhere I can find. A Columbus appears in 1870 with Emsley and Absilla in Randolph County, but the age is wrong. Comparing the entries for Emsley/Abcilla in 1870 and 1880, the children listed with them are completely inconsistent. Going back to 1860, I see Emsley with wife Eliza and still another child who is never seen again. I'm curious as to whether you have anything concrete relating Columbus of Forsyth with Emsley of Randolph. I think you're more closely connected to the Carters than I am, so maybe you have some family history that I wouldn't be aware of. Anyway, I don't have any good information on Abcilla right now, but I'll keep poking around for a while and let you know if anything turns up.

Note 2 Available evidence indicates that one of the above two Linthicums (Note 3) took 3 sons and 3 daughters to North Carolina in the late 1780’s. Ref. B indicates they were Betsy (Elizabeth) Thomas, Daniel, Sr., Richard, Peggy, & Polly. The surnames resulting from the marriages of the descendents of these seven individuals number over 50 within 4 generations and span many states. My hope is that at least one of these unions resulted in a family that had the means and the interest to trace and record their family histories and passed it on to their descendents. I have every reason to believe that my line comes from Daniel, Sr.’s son John W. Linthicum and his son William A. Linthicum but hard facts in institutional documents are difficult to come by. I would appreciate the opportunity to share information with anyone who has any information, whatsoever, on these Linthicums who migrated from Maryland to the Guilford Co., NC area in the late 1780’s or early 1790’s. Terry L. Linthicum 3700 S. Westport AVE, #1958 Sioux Falls, SD 57106 fayrankin@juno.com Note 1) Estate settled in Guilford County, NC in 1819. This and other evidence would indicate that Richard did not die in 1759 as indicated in “The Linthicum Family of Anne Arrundell Co., MD and Branches” as published in Maryland Historical Magazine, Vol XXV, No. 3, pp 275-283, Sept 1930. (Ref. A) Note 2) Thomas Francis Linthicum, JR. is not mentioned at all in Ref. A. In Matilda Badger’s book, “The Genealogy of the Linthicum and Allied Families (Ref B), there are no dates for any life event and no wife is shown for this individual. Note 3) The answer to this question is another subject in itself but given the paucity of information on Thomas Francis Linthicum, Jr. and the total lack of any evidence of his presence in NC, one would not be unjustified in questioning Ms. Badger’s statement on p78 of Ref B., “Thomas Francis Linthicum, Jr., (From p12) according to tradition, received a cool reception from his Tory wife upon his return from fighting in the Revolutionary War.; forthwith he took his three sons and three daughters to North Carolina---“. It should also be noted that the above Richard Linthicum (1745-1819) is said to have married Mary Sherwood (3/31/1753 MD –1/1/1790??). Their daughter Elizabeth (1774 MD- 1834 NC) appears to be one and the same as the Betsy in the six kids someone brought to NC. Mary was the brother of Daniel Sherwood III who married Richard’s cousin Frances Linthicum. Daniel Sherwood III sold his Maryland property and moved to Guilford! Co., NC during this same time period. A Daniel Sherwood and a Richard Linthicum are shown being close neighbors in Guilford County, NC in the 1790 Federal Census much as a Richard Linkom and a Daniel Sherwood are shown as living in the same area in the 1776 Maryland Census of Talbot Co.
