Hi, I'm asking some kind soul out there to do a lookup for me. I have from the AGBI database this reference: Surname: HOOKER, Robert North Carolina his. and gen. Reg. Jan. 1900-July 1903. Edenten, NC, 1900-03. (V.1-2, v.3, no.1-3): 3:456 I have been trying to get as much info on my 5th great grandfather Robert Hooker. Would someone who has access to this copy please let me know what this article says? Thank you, Linda http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~treesearcher
Hi, Patricia I know that there were probably *some* kinds of constant patterns, but these would probably vary wildly by location and census year......... The pattern for any one area might depend on which volunteer transcriber got handed which batch of pages from that census year. The one thing that has helped me in trying to puzzle these things out...... Try to move forward in the census years to find the earliest one that is *not* alphabetized. Unfortunately, your guy of primary interest may be dead...... But look for any that might pertain to your surname. And then make notes of the neighbors' surnames, at least for two pages before and after your cluster. You might find that there are two or three "clusters" of your surname in the county or district, but jot down the related surnames for each cluster. Then move back into the transcribed info, and follow the patterns of neighbors. "Compare and contrast", as we use to say in high school <sorry. grin.> I do not have this experience in Randolph, but in Davidson, you might find a cluster of Hoovers who were associated with Gosses, and Crosses, and Smiths, and Hedricks and another cluster of Hoovers who were more associated with Redwines and Millikins and Smiths and Davises......... Track the neighbors, and watch the patterns. This will not easily tell you who lived next door to whom in the transcribed censuses, but it can lead you to what specific area of the county your person of interest was *living in* at the time. Besides, you can learn a lot from following neighbors. I first did this from, well, necessity. As above <wry gr>. But now, I just do it. There are amazing things that fall out from the following of neighbors. Best of luck, Linda >Thanks to all who answered question re census for Randolph Co . James, As strange as it may be, that may very well the Wrenn that I am looking for. The surname and the dates are about the ones I am looking for. If it is the one I am looking for, he would be my G-G-Grandfather. Do you have a list of his children or his siblings? I am looking for the father of my Great Grandfather Thomas Jefferson Wrenn. He was born in Guilford County in 1832, I have no record of my G-Grandfather other than the ones in the family Bible. I wish I could give you more help. Dee: Saw your query concerning the 1780 Census for Randolph County for the Wrenn Family. Do you have any information about William Degge Wren who married Mehitable Walker Pearce (born Apr 15, 1794). They were married Feb 12, 1825, and lived either in Randolph or Chatham County, North Carolina. Mehitable Walker Pearce was born in Pawling, Dutchess County, New York. She was the daughter of Daniel Pearce and Anstis Pearce. Any information would be appreciated. Jim Pearce Nuevo, Calif.
The 1790 census of Randolph Co. seems very similar to period tax lists - crudely alphabetized within militia districts with additions at the end of each district list.
On many of the early censuses, including this one as far as I can remember, the census images that are available, and some of the indexes in print and on line, developed from the census microfilms, are actually later transcriptions of the original census pages. The actual census records were old, and degrading.............. Whether done by county archivists, or volunteers interested in local history long ago, there were people who transcribed some of the very early census data before the originals became completely unreadable. This was wonderful!!! And I thank them!! Their efforts allowed *something* to survive from these old pages. Without their work, there might have been nothing at all. On the other hand, they often took sections/pages and alphabetized the listings so that it would be easier to retreive the most basic information. This was ***long before*** searchable databases et al...... But when you come across census information in which there is a pattern of a page or two that seems alphabetical, and then it seems that it starts again and runs alphabetical......... This is a transcribed census. You need to keep in mind that: 1. Differently from other census info, from these transcribed censuses, you cannot know *anything* about geographical proximity from listing to listing. Three Hendricks may be listed in sequence, but these Hendricks may have lived in different parts of the township. They did not necessarily live next door to each other. 2. This early transcription adds another layer of possible mistranscription and error. Nonetheless, I'm glad they did what they did. At least the basic information is still available in some form.......... Linda >Does any one know roughly what sequence the census takers used when they did >the 1790 census ,some parts of the census seem t o alphabetized , and >other parts random. Is there any way to tell sequentially where people lived >going by the census for example 285-86.gif as found on the Randolph gen >web site for 1790 starts out with a Jerimiah York it seems very random >down to about Elizabeth Aldridge , then it becomes alphabetical for a >while .then it again becomes apparently random .Did the census takers go >by certain districts, and alphabetize the folks according to name >disregarding their location ,and who their neighbors were ?
I know that the 1890 census of Randolph county is done in a North and South division. I am not sure about how they were done in 1780. But I do know it looks like some are alphabetized. I wonder if the people just lived in a group like that or the census taker just knew these people and went to their houses in that order. I am looking for the Southern division of Randolph county for the year 1890. The Wrenn records are in that sections of the census. Dee --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Is there is a way t o determine who may have lived next to whom , going by these census.? Can one determine at least the rough areas that one lived in ? any help with these is appreciated .
