Marilyn, Since my grandmother who lived in Tryon died, I don't have a good local history source, unfortunately. But a good bet would be the old St. Luke's hospital, which is a grand old stone structure on Carolina Drive (the road up to Gillette Woods that turns off Hwy 108 just beside the A&P grocery store on the SC side of Tryon. Until the new hospital in Columbus was built in the 1970s (?), that was the main hospital, as small as it was. My mother and I were both born there. I've never heard of a sanitarium, but I don't know it's early history. You should contact the Polk County Historical Society. They have a small museum at the old depot, but I don't know if it's staffed full time. I'm sure the librarians at the Public Library in Columbus could give you a contact name. I haven't been there in several years.
