To the Polk County List: I would like to thank all of you who have written in response to my query about a T.B. sanitarium in Tryon in 1910. I have received several very thoughtful responses and lots of good ideas. As I read the messages I continued to look for answers on the internet. I was determined to find the place my grandmother may have stayed as a young woman and I think I may have stumbled across it. It was just a sentence on the Polk County Web Page listed under its history saying that in Tryon the "Pine Crest Inn - Built in 1900 as a sanitarium, was later converted into a retreat in 1917 by Carter Brown". I understand that today it is an outstanding resort with a wonderful restaurant. The dates fit and the property is described today as "35 cottages" which would work as well as one big house with huge open-air porches that I have also seen described to house t.b. patients. Does anyone have any comments or recollections about this possibility? I welcome any responses. Sincerely, Marilyn Schmidt Denver, CO ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
