Perhaps he has evidence that he forgot to include in the book. Some early, apparently undocumented genealogies of these early Paces, have shown this John married to a Sarah Pope and having a son Burrell Pope Pace. However, there is apparently no evidence that there was a Sarah Pope or that their son was named Burrell Pope Pace. Bruce shows his name as Burwell Pace, no middle initial. I know that there are many members of this mailing list who believe they are descended from John Pace and Sarah Pope and some who believe they are descended from their supposed son, Burrell Pope Pace who married Lydia Woodruff. But the crucial question is does anyone have any evidence for a Pace/Pope connection? Or a Pace/Burgh connection? Gordon W. Pace" Gordon, I, too, am vitally interested in the answers to your questions. I can tell you that from my own research that every time the name is supplied by the man, it is listed as "Burel", "Burril" or Burrell. It seems to me that when recorded by others for miscellaneous reasons (census, petition to NC Assembly, receipt of army deserter) the name is listed as "Burwell". 1779 NC Land Grant, #1765 "to Burel Pace" 1781 Surry County Tax List "Burril Pace" 1781 Petition to NC Assembly "Burwell Pace" 1782 Deserter received "of Burwell Pace of Surry County, NC" 1782 Surry County Tax List "Burwell Pace" 1785 SC Land Grant "to Burrell Pace", Spartanburg County 1787 Spartanburg County, SC, original records of 1st Baptist Church, "Burrell Pace & Lydia Pace" founding members 1790 SC Federal Census "Burwell Pace", Spartanburg County 1800 SC Federal Census "Burrell Pace", Spartanburg County 1801 SC Land Grant, "to Burrell Pace... bounded by Burel Pace & Nathaniel Woodruff", Spartanburg County 1804 Spartanburg County, SC, original records of 1st Baptist Church, "Burrell Pace & Lydia Pace" dismissed by letter 1805 - 1807 Rutherford County, NC, several deeds of purchase of property by "Burrell Pace" 1810 NC Federal Census "Burrell Pace, Rutherford County 1810 Rutherford County, NC, 2 deeds for sale of property by "Burrell Pace" Consider, if you will, this possible explanation. I have also seen the name listed in genealogical data as "Burl". This made me think of different pronunciations for the name: one (1) syllable "burl"; or, two (2) syllable "bur-rel" with the accent on the second syllable. Now suppose that our Burrell Pace spoke with a lisp or had trouble pronouncing his r's. It might be possible that when transcribing notes for a petition or a census record the person would hear "Burwell" when the man was trying to say "Burrell". It is possible that a lawyer at the NC Assembly, certain Tax or Census Enumerators or the keeper of an army prison for deserters had just met Mr. Pace. Unlike other, more long time associates, they misinterpreted his pronunciation. I think the most compelling evidence for the name Burrell is the fact that he named his fifth son "Burrell". His first son, Jonathan, and his third son, Cornelius, also name sons "Burrell". In fact, his younger brother, Edmund Marion Pace also named a son "Burrell". Now here is a really curious bit of information to throw into the mix. In the "new" Mountain Page Cemetery in Saluda, NC, there is a family burial plot with the SURNAME "Burrell". This is just a few short miles from where our Burrell Pace is buried in Old Mountain Page Cemetery. I have not had time to try to establish any link to this family. As to the Burgh/Pope conundrum, I can say that during the time that Burrell Pace resided in Surry County, NC there were both Burgh's and at least one (1) Pope in the same county. In fact there were several Burgh's. One on the most prominent was Woodie Burgh, the brother of Sarah Burgh. He is listed in Bruce Howard's book as an heir in the same will which lists Sarah Burgh. I can also tell you this. The grave marker for Burrell Pace at Old Mountain Page Cemetery in Saluda, NC is inscribed "B.P. PACE, THE OLDEST ANCESTOR OF OUR FAMILY, WAS FROM VIRGINIA, DIED 1816, 'PREPARE TO MEET ME IN HEAVEN'". You will notice that it does not say Burrell or Pope. This Pope business might have been an attempt to connect John Pace to Sarah Pope simply based on the "P" on the obelisk at his grave site. We know that there was at least one (1) Burgh family in Prince George County, VA during the time that the John and Sarah Pace family resided there. I would like to know if there were any Pope families in that same county in the same time period. You might find it interesting that this marker confirms another new point advanced by Bruce Howard. He maintains that the older sons of John and Sarah Pace were born in Prince George County, VA. All other genealogies that I have seen contend that Burrell Pace was born in either Surry County or Edgecombe County, NC. The ancestors who erected this marker over 100 years after his death were lead to understand that Burrell Pace was born in Virginia. Perhaps, he was proud of that fact and passed it down to his descendents.
