    1. [NCPOLK-L] Search Fees
    2. McCrann, Grace-Ellen
    3. 28 May 1998 A recent note to me was posted on this list earlier today re search fees for out of state patrons. The State Library of North Carolina does NOT charge an out-of-state search fee, (and never has), though you do have to pay for photocopies and we ask for a stamped, self-addressed envelope. There are details about the services available by mail from Genealogical Services at the State Library of North Carolina at: http://statelibrary.dcr.state.nc.us/iss/gr/mail.htm There is no search fee (and never has been) re a query about our holdings. As a matter of fact you can search the State Library of North Carolina catalogue online for free. You may want to look at our "Using the State Library Catalog" page at: http://statelibrary.dcr.state.nc.us/iss/gr/catalog.htm for details. I'm afraid there has been a misunderstanding about the State Library of North Carolina and the NC State Archives. Although the State Library of North Carolina and the NC State Archives share the same building, we are two entirely different places, run by two entirely different managements. The NC State Archives does charge an $8.00 out-of-state search fee for mail requests and that fee is set by law by the NC General Assembly. Out-of-state patrons who come to Raleigh and do their own research are not charged a search fee, though they still of course have to pay for any photocopies. The NC State Archives has a web page about their services by mail at: http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/sections/archives/arch/mail.htm Charging out-of-state or non-members for search work is not unusual. The Library of Virginia charges a $10.00 out-of-state search fee, the Georgia Historical Society charges a search fee of $15.00 for Society members and $30.00 for non-members, the Georgia Department of Archives and History charges a mail reference fee of $15.00 for Georgia residents and $25.00 for non-Georgia residents, the Library of Congress Photoduplication service assesses a non-refundable $10.00 advance search fee for each order and the Maryland State Archives charges $10.00 to search for birth/death records and $20.00 an hour to search for other records. 1. [NCPOLK-L] Tryon Sanitarium
    2. Marilyn Schmidt
    3. To the Polk County List: I would like to thank all of you who have written in response to my query about a T.B. sanitarium in Tryon in 1910. I have received several very thoughtful responses and lots of good ideas. As I read the messages I continued to look for answers on the internet. I was determined to find the place my grandmother may have stayed as a young woman and I think I may have stumbled across it. It was just a sentence on the Polk County Web Page listed under its history saying that in Tryon the "Pine Crest Inn - Built in 1900 as a sanitarium, was later converted into a retreat in 1917 by Carter Brown". I understand that today it is an outstanding resort with a wonderful restaurant. The dates fit and the property is described today as "35 cottages" which would work as well as one big house with huge open-air porches that I have also seen described to house t.b. patients. Does anyone have any comments or recollections about this possibility? I welcome any responses. Sincerely, Marilyn Schmidt Denver, CO ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

I have had several suggestions about contacting either the local library or the historical society and I will try them both. My grandmother's experience may have been similar to that of your g-grandmother in that she may also have originally contracted t.b. from her brother who died from it several years before she did. It is now known that it is possible to carry the disease for some time before you actually have symptoms. Thank you for your help. I appreciate your time in responding to my query. My grandmother, Frances Vesta Hewitt Schmidt, had T.B. and died in Tryon in 1910 at the age of twenty. She was supposed to have been sent from Cincinnati to a sanatarium where they were still hoping for a cure. Family history also says she was with relatives in Tryon but since she had a communicable disease, I rather think she was in a hospital or in seclusion with others who also had the disease. I haven't found this information elsewhere so I thought perhaps someone on the list who lives/lived in the Tryon area might know if there was a special home or hospital for T.B. patients. I would be grateful for any information any of you might have on this question. Sincerely, Marilyn Schmidt Denver, CO >> <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< reply >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Responding to the queries and comments about the TB sanitarium, I offer the following: 1) There is a public library in Tryon, NC that may have some information. 2) The sister of my great-grandmother succumbed to TB after caring for a brother-in-law who also died of TB in Tryon. I do not know whether either were in hospitals or not. I know that Amanda Walker Fisher died about 1900 (I have correct date somewhere) and is buried in Tryon Cemetery as is her brother-in-law who died probably a couple of years before her. I wish I could offer you more information but my Polk Co. info is sketchy. Now I have a query>>>>>>>>>>>>> Does anyone know of a boarding school for boys in Tryon or Hendersonville about 1910? My grandfather attended the school but no one seems to know the name of it or exactly where it was located. I believe that it was a high school but was also college prep. Any info on this would be appreciated. Linda in Houston

    3. Marilyn, Since my grandmother who lived in Tryon died, I don't have a good local history source, unfortunately. But a good bet would be the old St. Luke's hospital, which is a grand old stone structure on Carolina Drive (the road up to Gillette Woods that turns off Hwy 108 just beside the A&P grocery store on the SC side of Tryon. Until the new hospital in Columbus was built in the 1970s (?), that was the main hospital, as small as it was. My mother and I were both born there. I've never heard of a sanitarium, but I don't know it's early history. You should contact the Polk County Historical Society. They have a small museum at the old depot, but I don't know if it's staffed full time. I'm sure the librarians at the Public Library in Columbus could give you a contact name. I haven't been there in several years.
