    2. Vicki, Edgar is close but Polk County Memorial Cemetery is located off Highway 108. As you are traveling west on Highway 108 from Columbus toward Tryon, it is about 1/2 mile beyond the I-26 overpass on your right. Unfortunately, I believe that Edgar is right about it not being on the internet. J.D. Floyd has posted most of the cemeteries on in the area on the internet and it is not on his site. However, this doesn't mean that it is not on another site. If you are interested, J.D. Floyd's site can be found at http://rfci.net/wdfloyd/. Don't let the title, The Cemeteries Of Rutherford County, NC, throw you off. If you scroll down you will find the cemeteries for Polk County as well as several other surrounding counties. Good Luck. Perhaps he has evidence that he forgot to include in the book. Some early, apparently undocumented genealogies of these early Paces, have shown this John married to a Sarah Pope and having a son Burrell Pope Pace. However, there is apparently no evidence that there was a Sarah Pope or that their son was named Burrell Pope Pace. Bruce shows his name as Burwell Pace, no middle initial. I know that there are many members of this mailing list who believe they are descended from John Pace and Sarah Pope and some who believe they are descended from their supposed son, Burrell Pope Pace who married Lydia Woodruff. But the crucial question is does anyone have any evidence for a Pace/Pope connection? Or a Pace/Burgh connection? Gordon W. Pace" Gordon, I, too, am vitally interested in the answers to your questions. I can tell you that from my own research that every time the name is supplied by the man, it is listed as "Burel", "Burril" or Burrell. It seems to me that when recorded by others for miscellaneous reasons (census, petition to NC Assembly, receipt of army deserter) the name is listed as "Burwell". 1779 NC Land Grant, #1765 "to Burel Pace" 1781 Surry County Tax List "Burril Pace" 1781 Petition to NC Assembly "Burwell Pace" 1782 Deserter received "of Burwell Pace of Surry County, NC" 1782 Surry County Tax List "Burwell Pace" 1785 SC Land Grant "to Burrell Pace", Spartanburg County 1787 Spartanburg County, SC, original records of 1st Baptist Church, "Burrell Pace & Lydia Pace" founding members 1790 SC Federal Census "Burwell Pace", Spartanburg County 1800 SC Federal Census "Burrell Pace", Spartanburg County 1801 SC Land Grant, "to Burrell Pace... bounded by Burel Pace & Nathaniel Woodruff", Spartanburg County 1804 Spartanburg County, SC, original records of 1st Baptist Church, "Burrell Pace & Lydia Pace" dismissed by letter 1805 - 1807 Rutherford County, NC, several deeds of purchase of property by "Burrell Pace" 1810 NC Federal Census "Burrell Pace, Rutherford County 1810 Rutherford County, NC, 2 deeds for sale of property by "Burrell Pace" Consider, if you will, this possible explanation. I have also seen the name listed in genealogical data as "Burl". This made me think of different pronunciations for the name: one (1) syllable "burl"; or, two (2) syllable "bur-rel" with the accent on the second syllable. Now suppose that our Burrell Pace spoke with a lisp or had trouble pronouncing his r's. It might be possible that when transcribing notes for a petition or a census record the person would hear "Burwell" when the man was trying to say "Burrell". It is possible that a lawyer at the NC Assembly, certain Tax or Census Enumerators or the keeper of an army prison for deserters had just met Mr. Pace. Unlike other, more long time associates, they misinterpreted his pronunciation. I think the most compelling evidence for the name Burrell is the fact that he named his fifth son "Burrell". His first son, Jonathan, and his third son, Cornelius, also name sons "Burrell". In fact, his younger brother, Edmund Marion Pace also named a son "Burrell". Now here is a really curious bit of information to throw into the mix. In the "new" Mountain Page Cemetery in Saluda, NC, there is a family burial plot with the SURNAME "Burrell". This is just a few short miles from where our Burrell Pace is buried in Old Mountain Page Cemetery. I have not had time to try to establish any link to this family. As to the Burgh/Pope conundrum, I can say that during the time that Burrell Pace resided in Surry County, NC there were both Burgh's and at least one (1) Pope in the same county. In fact there were several Burgh's. One on the most prominent was Woodie Burgh, the brother of Sarah Burgh. He is listed in Bruce Howard's book as an heir in the same will which lists Sarah Burgh. I can also tell you this. The grave marker for Burrell Pace at Old Mountain Page Cemetery in Saluda, NC is inscribed "B.P. PACE, THE OLDEST ANCESTOR OF OUR FAMILY, WAS FROM VIRGINIA, DIED 1816, 'PREPARE TO MEET ME IN HEAVEN'". You will notice that it does not say Burrell or Pope. This Pope business might have been an attempt to connect John Pace to Sarah Pope simply based on the "P" on the obelisk at his grave site. We know that there was at least one (1) Burgh family in Prince George County, VA during the time that the John and Sarah Pace family resided there. I would like to know if there were any Pope families in that same county in the same time period. You might find it interesting that this marker confirms another new point advanced by Bruce Howard. He maintains that the older sons of John and Sarah Pace were born in Prince George County, VA. All other genealogies that I have seen contend that Burrell Pace was born in either Surry County or Edgecombe County, NC. The ancestors who erected this marker over 100 years after his death were lead to understand that Burrell Pace was born in Virginia. Perhaps, he was proud of that fact and passed it down to his descendents. Thank you Mary Mary, The name Bowling came from Greenville/Spartanburg, SC. All we know is that Darcus Levisa Bowling married our James Fisher, Jr. in Greenville/Spartanburg. A later census says that she was born in Burke Co., NC but we haven't been able to prove that. When I was in Greenville, SC library, I examined the "vertical files" which contain loose leaf documents about various families in the area and usually are donated by someone when cleaning out their parents' home after deaths. The Bowling name has connections to Pocahontas I believe through her son. I would have to dig out those sheets of which I made copies. That would be in the Greenville area, but we do not know if kin to our Dorcas. Good luck in your search! Linda in Houston >>

    2. To Larry and R. Brock, Larry is correct about James Caldwell Fisher. I dug out some information this morning and can provide the following (albeit it from a rather photocopy). James Washington Fisher (1753-1832) married twice that we know of. First wife not proved on name. Second wife was Nancy Ivins/Evans from Greenville, SC. Son James Washington Fisher, Jr. married Dorcas Levisa Bowling/Bowlin, etc. 5 sons and 5 daughters (James, Jr. and Dorcas) Sons: James L. Fisher married Elizabeth ? Clark Fisher married Louise Chowan William Fisher married Harriet Simms John Fisher maried Orpha Belle Carruth Benjamin Perry Fisher married Nancy Patterson 5 daughters: Laurette (or Lorette) Eleanor married Levi H. Butler (son of Moses Butler) Harriett Esther married Jacob King and moved to Arkansas for her health - lived, died and buried in Arkansas Polly (probably Mary) married Thomas Cantrell (of Tryon) Nancy married John Green (a long hunter with James, Jr.) Cynthia married Ben Breedlove Children of John and Orpha Belle Carruth Fisher Margaret Fisher married ?? can't read Ephraim Taylor Fisher died at age 12 of typhoid fever Warren Alexander Fisher never married. James Caldwell (or Colwell) Fisher married Fannie Henderson Andrew Jackson Fisher married Jennie Neuman George Washington Fisher married Adelina Newman (Neuman ?) Lee Roy Fisher married first Amanda Walker; married second Nettie A. Galloway William Clark Fisher married Rhoda E. Walker (sister of Amanda) (my ggf and ggm) John Scott Fisher (believe never married) Susan E. "Sue" Fisher married James Booker I show your James Caldwell born 1855 and died 1936 married Fannie Henderson. Their children: Can't read, could be John Brock?? 5/23/1895 Amanda H. Fisher 11/1/1897. Rozeli Lorance Fisher ?? Lucille M. Sampies (10/6/1899) James Kitchen Fisher (born 6/23/1906) Eber Sophie ?? and another name starts with an E. I hope this is helpful to you. This list of names and dates is on a large tree and I am not certain that this last group of names were all the children of James Caldwell Fisher and his wife. It is possible that some are spouses. I am pretty certain about the groups of names before that. Many of the above named Fishers lived their lives in Transylvania County. James and Dorcas and John and Orpha Belle are buried in the Lake Toxaway Baptist Church cemetery (which some of the Floridians now want to call Lakeside Cemetery). If you have a chance to visit that cemetery, you will find many Fishers there. Also other cemeteries in the county. Lake Toxaway Baptist Church is located just off Highway 64 about 1 mile or less from Toxaway Falls. About 10 miles up the mountain from Rosman,NC. Much of the land surrounding the river and falls was original Fisher land and some is still owned by Fisher descendants. Larry, So good to see you are still working on the Fisher line. Have you found anything new?? I will see Tony in about 4 weeks. The Fisher Reunion is next Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Lake Toxaway Baptist Church. I can't make it. I am still working overtime on extended tax returns. I won't be able to get away until about Oct 1 or Oct 15. I can't decide if I want to go east again and dig or go to Salt Lake and just work in the history center there. 1. [NCPOLK-L] JOHNSONs of POLK Co. NC 1780-1830
    2. I am seeking information about my JOHNSON ancestors who evidently moved to Polk County from neighboring counties about 1800. Other researchers have hinted that some of the JOHNSONs were pretty tough customers, so I am prepared for anything. Can anybody tell me about the Johnsons of Polk County of this time period? I suspect my ancestors (Wm. born @ 1785, Joseph born @ 1787, and Aaron Johnson born @ 1792) were the children of Edward Johnson listed in the 1790 census of Rutherford Co. living near the families of James Sr. and James Johnson Jr.; and also listed in the 1800 census of Buncombe Co. living near the families of John, Jacob, Nathaniel, and Noble Johnson. I have heard from researchers of Noble's descendents, but they know nothing about these other Johnsons other than James. One researcher says that Edward is buried in Transylvania County, and others say that a number of Johnsons moved into the hills of Polk County. My Johnsons married into the YOUNG family of Greenville District SC and all moved to KY by 1820. I have pretty good records of them in KY, but little in the Carolinas. This surname is so tough to research because it is so common. Does anybody know about the Johnsons of Polk County between 1780 and 1830? Bruce Nichols [email protected]
