    1. Re: [NCPOLK-L] Polk Memorial Park, cemetery survey
    2. McFarlands as a family has been in the burial business for a long time, but I dont knonw about records that old. The death certificate might yield some clues. there were mostly family and church cemeteries at that time from what I have learned. I have been researching my families in Polk, Henderson and Rutherford counties for about 9 years now and only rarely found a "public" cemetery. The Rutherford County cemetery in Rutherfordton is large and includes families from outside the area. It has been mapped and is on the internet, so you might check there

    1. Re: [NCPOLK-L] Polk Memorial Park, cemetery survey
    2. I had mentioned the Tryon cemetery which I hope you are surveying. I would love to if I lived in Tryon, but I am in Charlotte. A couple of family cemeteries: one is in Mill Springs at the old Ambrose Mills homeplace (the home itself is now in the hunting country, Blackberry Hill) Col. Ambrose Mills is buried there, my great grandfather William Ambrose Mills, my great great grandfather William E Mills, and I am sure more but there are no markers I dont think anymore. I tried to find it about 5 years ago and was unable. another is the Marvel Mills family cemetery that is supposedly near the intersection of Hwy 9 and Silver Creek Rd. I would love to try to help you with this one (you would need high boots to trek it due to weeds and critters)Marvel Mills who lived in Seven Hearths before it was moved is buried there and numerous family members doubt there are any markers Beth Elliott

    1. Re: [NCPOLK-L] Polk County Ponder's/Owens
    2. Virginia, I'm interested in your Ponder's. I have been looking for any information on a Sarah (Loudendy) Ponder, b. June 1820, d.1844 (they dates havent been proven). She was married to Hampton (Hamp) Owens (Owen) and they lived in Polk and Rutherford Counties. I would be interested in any information that you might have. I am also interested on any info on Hampton Owens if he crosses your path. Thanks Teresa Owens

    1. Re: [NCPOLK-L] Polk County Cemeteries
    2. In the small town where I am from in NY we were told there were 16 Brucher children, yet there are no graves. No one seems to say much. Someone did tell me about 3 graves in an old cemetery and I was able to find them. The thing is I still have no idea where they found this information. I know she told someone to get her book! I did later find a cemetery listing book and paid a lot for it, the Bruchers are not listed in it! We finally determined as I did manage to get two death certificates that they are all in un-marked graves. My aunt too remembered going with her mother to put flowers at graves under a big tree. Even though a family member is on the cemetery association they did not answer my letter. So you see what can happen! The thing is they were land rich, the state now owns all the land the family owned and it is a state park.

    2. While everyone is on the subject of graveyards, I have tried for years to find the grave of George H. Blackwell, who was sheriff of Polk Co. for some years. He died in Sept, 1874. I also am seeking the grave of his wife,Lillie Lyles Blackwell, who died in 1871. Can anyone help? I would be greatly appreciative of any suggestions or help. Thank you, Penny

    1. [NCPOLK-L] Polk County Cemeteries
    2. Hi Pat: There is an old Splawn graveyard. I don't know that I could find it again but maybe some folks who currently live in Polk County could. It is located at the top of the hill behind Polk Central School on Rt #9. There are lots of graves there but only two tombstones: that of William Splawn (1800-1884) and his second wife Jane Waldrop. Somewhere in this house I have pictures of the stones. It seems to me that we stopped at the first house on the northwest side of the school and then we walked a long way up the hill and through the woods. Also on my father's farm, now developed in Columbus, is an Old Tallent graveyard. There are no tombstones and maybe only two or three graves. They belonged to members of the L.L. Tallent family who owned this land before us. I don't know who owns that particular lot now. It is on Meadowlark Lane. And I don't know if anyone alive knows who was buried there and I don't know when the burials took place. Daddy bought that property in 1951 and my child hood memory is that those were old graves then. And I've been looking for years for an old Ponder graveyard. I have a feeling there are no stones, where ever it is. I'm looking for a Hezkiah Ponder probably died about 1840 and the also for the first wife of Ransom Ponder. Ransom and his second wife (Margaret Splawn Ponder) are buried at Mill Spring Baptist. Virginia Splawn Green [email protected]

    3. Hi List, My name is Pat McCool and I live in Polk County. We are doing a survey of all the cemeteries and hope to publish this in the next year or two? Polk Memorial Park is right off of the interstate 26. Right across from Bilo and KFC. We think that their are around 200 cemeteries in the county. McFarlands Funeral home in Tryon could be your best place to find peoples grave before 1929. Sometimes on death Certicates they only say the town in which they are buried. P. S. If you know where a cemetery is? Please contact us! We want to do a thorough job! I will also be gald to help someone when I have the time.

    1. Re: [NCPOLK-L] Polk Memorial Park, cemetery survey
    2. Thanks for the reply..someone had already mentioned that funeral home and I got the number and passed it along... I have been working with doing this in my little hometown in NY. The problem is there is so much conflictig information. I found cemeteries there with 3-4 names! And regretfuly even if you do this sometimes no one really wants to accept the information! I was told up there too for our county there were over 200 cemeteries.

    1. Re: [NCPOLK-L] Polk Memorial Gardens
    2. Tryon Cemetery would be the only one at that time unless the person was buried in a specific church cemetery. as far as I know it has not been mapped and many of the original lot record/deeds were destroyed in a fire about 50 years ago
