    1. [NCPOLK-L] Benjamin Holbert estate files
    2. Pam Wilson
    3. Dear friends, I've spent the day today transcribing and summarizing the contents of both estate files from the NC Archives (Polk County Loose Estate Files) regarding the Estate of Benjamin HOLBERT. It's a fascinating story about a mountain farmer who had a large family and then died without a will. Benjamin and his wife Charity Stover Holbert owned hundreds of acres in what became known as Holbert's Cove in Rutherford (now Polk) County, NC, on Big and Little Cove Creek, which run down parallel to the Green River Cove between Saluda and Silver Creek, as well as on neighboring Alton's Creek. Benjamin Holbert was considered quite wealthy before the Civil War--his real and personal property in 1860 was valued at $10,510, which evidently included the eight slaves he owned (Augustus and Kizzie and their children, probable ancestors of most of the African American Holberts in the western NC area). In contrast, Benjamin's value in 1870 was a mere $675. Benjamin and Charity had 13 children: Sophia (m. Stephen Cowart), Sarah (m. Greenberry Arledge), Joseph (m. Elzira King and Mary Newman), Rebecca (m. Isaac Arledge), Jacob (m. Nancy Dimsdale), John (m. Maden Foster and Rebecca King), Benjamin (m. Mary Carroll), Abraham, Caroline (m. John L. Thompson), Elizabeth (m. Clement Arledge), Charity (m. Thomas Newman and Ransom Foster), Francis (m. Elizabeth Jones), and Mary Pamela (m. Eli Jackson). Abraham seems to have been killed during the Civil War; Sophia, Sarah and Benjamin died young, but left children who were heirs to their grandfather's estate. [Sarah Holbert Arledge was my great-great-great-grandmother, mother of John Pinkney Arledge, who was the father of John Aden Arledge, the father of John Thomas "Jack" Arledge, my grandfather.] What complicated matters was that Sophia Cowart, Jacob Holbert, John Holbert, and Benjamin Holbert Jr. all moved to the Cherokee County, Georgia area (which is, ironically, the county in which I now work). The fact that the family was divided between Georgia and North Carolina made the settlement of the estate quite complicated. These documents contains information about Holbert, Arledge, Coward/Cowart and many related and neighboring families that lived in the Green River/Holbert's Cove area of Polk and Henderson Counties of NC, such as Newman, Jackson, Hamilton, Foster, Thompson, Bradley, Justice, Nelson, Morris, etc. It also contains some of the estate papers of Ambrose Mills, though I'm not sure why--they don't seem to be in any way connected to the Holbert case, and may have been misfiled. To view my summary of these documents, please click on http://www.geocities.com/wilson_pam/holbert/BenjaminHolbertEstate.html Please let me know if this is useful to you and/or if you have any questions. My fingers are tired,, but it feels good to have actually completed a task like this that I've been trying to get done for a couple of years! 1. Re: [NCPOLK-L] Bradleys in Polk County
    2. Has anyone given you information on the questionable relatives? Since you are looking for dates, I assume the article did not mention the year that these names are mentioned? A certain year could narrow down the information search. There is a Tryon Daily News that usually gave information on events and happenings in the area. But without a time line there would be a lot of research time. I am working on my own family tree/history. Can you narrow the search at least to a year? You can contact me at ab3sden@aol.com. Hope you have luck in your quest.

    1. Re: [NCPOLK-L] Polk Memorial Park, cemetery survey
    2. When a cemetery is mapped out, I thought it would be done as a map showing the dimensions of the graveyard and the location of the names buried there. Also a list of those names that were readable maybe in alphabetic listing or grouped in sections of the area they are buried in. If it is in a rough form, I would be interested in helping to try to put it in a mapped out form and an alphabetic listing. Many of my kin buried there. Went by this past weekend and looked over the whole site. I noticed the grave sites that are on the steep hillside on the far right are in disarray and some headstones are fallen over. Let me know what you find out. I would like to take a look at what has been done. I live near Inman, SC not far from Tryon. Later Alexander Beatson. .

    3. Larry, If you mean, are there unmarked graves in Tryon Cem., the answer is yes. There are many. And that is why we need to know if you know any of the people that are buried in an unidentified grave. Thanks Pat

    3. Hi, Do you know if there are any plans to map this cemetery? A group of people from Polk County are trying to publish a book of all the cemeteries in Polk County. Tryon Cem. has already been done. Do you know of any unknown graves? Being from Tryon, I have many relatives buried there including my parents I live in Columbus. Pat

    2. I assume that you know that Tryon has a Tryon Cemetery in the city limits. As this e-mail did not mention the ones you had. It is uncharted (mapped) as far as I know. It is a very large area. My family and relatives have plots there. Alexander "Andy" Beatson.

    1. [NCPOLK-L] Re: Owens/Ponder
    2. Virginia, I'm interested in your Ponder's. I have been looking for any information on a Sarah (Loudendy) Ponder, b. June 1820, d.1844 (they dates haven't been proven). She was married to Hampton (Hamp) Owens (Owen) and they lived in Polk and Rutherford Counties. I would be interested in any information that you might have. I am also interested on any info on Hampton Owens if he crosses your path. Well, I can't find my Ponder material at the moment. But there are lots of connections between the Ponders and the Owens. I did find this: Hezekiah Ponder born about 1770 in VA died about 1840 Buncombe Co., NC. somtimes listed as "Kie" He was a cabinet maker. He married Amy Ransom; she born about 1779; Children 1. Ransom Ponder 9b. 1809) this my line; he married twice a M. Owens and Margaret Splawn. Somewhere I have M. Owens parents. She dead by 1850; 2. Nancy Ponder born about 1810 3. Jehu Ponder born 1810/1815 4. James William Pinckney Ponder (went to GA in the 1830's; nothing known) 5. John Terrell Ponder b. 10 Aug. 1815; d. 21 June 1904 (Cherokee Co., GA) 6. Malinda Ponder b. about abt 1816 9 I think she married an Owens) 7. Mahalle Ponder Ransom's first wife was the daughter of Raleigh Owens and Alesy (unknown). Second wife was Margaret Splawn, daughter of William Splawn. There is a connection with David Owens; but I can't remember how it is or if we were ever able to prove it. Hang on to my address. I'm going out of town for a couple of weeks and then what's left of March is real busy, so I may forget. I've got to get reorganized here with my files! Virginia Green VaGreen100@aol.com

    1. Re: [NCPOLK-L] Polk County Cemeteries

    3. Pat, There are several very old Arledge graveyards in the Green River Cove. One just has a couple of graves and is just off the road a few yards not too far from Silver Creek Church. The other is up on a hill or knoll across the river, between Green River and Bright's Creek, just downstream of the first bridge, if I remember correctly. It's in the same vicinity of the river as the "Devil's Footprint" that is in family lore and also in Frank FitzSimmons' book. It's *very* difficult to find, but I did make it up there once. The graves are fieldstones and not carved, so it's a wonderful feeling to know there's a cemetery but not much help in knowing the names of the ancestors buried there. The old folks told me about 20 years ago they were the early ARLEDGEs and maybe some other families as well. There's also a small family cemetery back in the woods back off of Erskine Road between Erskine Rd and Harmon Field in which I know at least George (1770-1869) and Abigail Braden (1786-1855) Williams are buried, and probably others in the WILLIAMS, HANNON or BRADEN families. I don't know if this is the same cemetery or not, but I have a note that their son Pulaski Williams and his wife Easter Hannon "are buried in unmarked graves in the Pacolet Hills section of Tryon near their old home place." Hope this helps! Pam ************************************* Pam Wilson Marietta, GA wilsonpam@mindspring.com Arledge Family History Project http://www.geocities.com/heartland/prairie/8208
