There was a John Sevage born 14 Sep 1794 in Hardham, Sussex, England, son of Richard Challen Sevage and Sarah Laker. The year is right, so maybe he moved to North Carolina. Possibly he was on the English side in the War of 1812 and stayed in America after it? I seem to recollect having read about actions in the Hampton Roads area during this War. This John Sevage had an elder brother, Richard, christened 10 May 1793, same parish. Their father, Richard Challen Sevage, was christened 20 Nov 1768, same parish, father untraced, mother Anne. This might be Anne Challen, born 1 Feb 1735, Pulborough, Sussex, England. However, Challen was a common name in Sussex. Richard Challen Sevage married Sarah Laker on 20 Jun 1792 at Chichester, Sussex, England - in this record he is spelt Sevege. There is also a record of what is presumably the same marriage dated 24 Jun 1792 at Coldwaltham, Sussex, England - in which the groom's name is given as Richard Challen. Hardham and Coldwaltham are neighboring villages: Chichester is some distance away. There was a Morris family who were Quakers in Pasquotank county from 1680 or earlier. John Sivage's wife might have been Anna Morris, born abt 1809, daughter of Dempsey (Demcey/Demcy) Morris and Sarah Brown. Assuming the various spellings of Dempsey are the same person, Sarah was his second wife. The Sivages were also Quakers, as the birth of Isaiah R Sivage on 18 Sep 1826 is recorded at Plainfield Mm, Hendricks, Indiana. If you are correcr about 'All the children of John and Anna were born "near Elizabeth City" NC', then this must have been recorded retrospectively after the family had moved. Between 1800 and 1830, because of their opposition to slavery, many Quakers moved from Perquimans, Pasquotank and Chowan counties in North Carolina to the free territory of the Northwest (which became Ohio and Indiana). A widowed member of my wife's family - Lydia (Overman) Chappell - made this move with her children in 1830. At 07:54 PM 10/29/1999 -0500, you wrote: >Has anyone EVER seen this name ANYWHERE??
