    3. Alice, Further to your request for African American family history data, I wonder if you are aware of the 1930s Federal Writers' Project collection: Slave Narratives: A Folk History of Slavery in the U.S. from Interviews with Former Slaves. Over 2,000 slave narratives were collected and more than 170 of them were from North Carolina. These narratives, though artless in many ways, are not only a first-hand account of some of the Nation's tragic history, but also contain some very good generalogical information, and first hand accounts of family history, both slave and master. The original manucscript of this collection is housed int he Rare Book and Special Collections Division of the Library of Congress. Facsimile editions of the collection are available. Universities may have them available on microfilm. In reading through the collection, be mindful that many former slaves being interviewed were hundreds of miles a way from their birth place...so the site of the interview is not necessarily an index to relevancy. Most interviewees identify the county in which they were born.
