Hi I am very much interested would like to know how or if the Oates fits into that family. Joseph was born August 1697, so they would have to fit into the paternal side of his family. Joseph's mother might have been Elizabeth Perry. His name appears at the bottom of her will on the left as a witness I said. Jacob L. Seeking information on the family of Samuel WEEKS and Francis MULLEN who married in Perquimans County, bond date 14 May 1810. Pat Dawson <[email protected]>
Le, This is my line and I would love to compare notes with you. Or at least I have a Richard who died in 17175 who married Ann Garret. I do not have her will though. If you are interested, I will look for my sources tomorrow. I am looking to see if Anne Chesson or Cheston maybe related Joseph Oates he is listed as a witness on her will. His name appears on the left side. Which I think means he would be related to her husband. The will was probated in 1727. Not sure if her husband was named Richard. I think he might have died in 1715. I need some information about the Leonards in this county, going back to at least 1760's. My 2nd great grandfather, Jacob Leonard was born 1763, and we cannot find his parents. There were Leonard's in this county before that . Perhaps someone might know of my 3rd great grandparents already. Family papers state that he was born in England, but we can find no proof of that. I found Jacob with his wife Rebecca Brewer in 1786 in Chatham County. They raised a family in Randolph Co. I have pulled everything out of Randolph Co. that is available, but there is no hint as to his parents. It is quite possible that he was brought over from England as a young lad, however, as I said before, we can find no proof. I have checked all the ships lists for any of that time period. My search has gone on for 27 years, and I may have gone as far as I can go, so if you have any hint as to who may be my great grands, I would greatly appreciate it. This is being posted to several other county lists, so if you recieve it more than once, I apologize, but I must get on with finding his parents if at all possible. Thanks to you in advance. Sincerely Mary Leonard Stephenson [email protected]

Travel north on 1224 from US 17 aprox 2.3 miles to the railroad tracks. Just as you cross the RR tracks, look to the left - that's Chapanoke! I can send you a MS Word document with a map picture from MS Streets & Maps if you can handle MS Word format documents. I can't remember if attachments are allowed on the List or not.
Can anyone give me some advice or direction as to how to find the Chapanoke town/area outside of Hertford? I am trying to determine the location of the farm land that belonged to one of my ancestors. Information that I have from obituaries and such say that the family lived in Chapanoke. I drove through what I thought might be the area (near the old Oak Grove church?) once on a trip and there doesn't seem to be much there except farming. On the 1870 census, it lists the household in the Parkville District. I wrote down some information about the land from the will of my ggggrandfather, James Towe, who owned the property. The will shows how it was divided out among his widow and children. The description is "land lies on the west side of the main road from Chapanoke to Woodville in Perquimans County. "the James Towe Home Farm" adjoining land of Dr. T. D. Martin, Calvin Hendrix, and others" I would love to find this land and photograph it for my geneology records, but don't have a clue as to how to go about finding it. Do you have any suggestions or advice? Also, can anyone tell me if there's a place I can obtain a map of Perquimans County with major/nonmajor roads? Any advice would be much appreciated!!! Thank you! --Holly Schoenhoff Blacksburg, VA
Chapanoke Road runs north of Highway 17 just east of Hertford, North Carolina. The road is shaped like a large Y. The top two arms of the Y touch Highway 17, and are on each side of the Woodville airport. The bottom single foot of the Y runs north to Parkville. At the junction of the top two arms and the bottom leg is an area designated Chapanoke. Just imagine a Y upside down sitting on Highway 17. C Lucas

Perquimans County North Carolina Deed Book A page 112 23/Oct/1696 states James OATES Albemarle, Mary STROUD did bind her eldest daughter Easter STROUD to said OATES for 15 years, now how could I determine if this Mary was the sister of James OATES. I have posted to the STROUD list and have had no reply, so I am hoping that someone on this list is working on the family of Mary OATES STROUD. Please email me [email protected] Jacob L.
