    3. Le Are you interested in Thomas Harveys coat of arms or James Oates? I have Thomas Harvey's coat of arms that I inscribed from his tombstone. If you have any info on Thomas Harvey that I may not have, I would like to see it. In all my research on Thomas, I have not seen James Oates mentioned. You may find something in Raleigh, Nc. in the Archives there. I have been planning to go there for research on the Harveys. Thomas Harvey was the brother of my 7th. Greatfather(?) 2. Florence Cannariato
    3. Does anyone have a notion as to the origins of John and Caleb Harman who appear in the records for Perquimans Co., in the 1700's. Robert Harman's will was dated January 7, 1758, wife Elizabeth, Exec. Caleb, sons Caleb, John, Stephen, Thomas, Daughter Mary. Caleb Harman's will was dated October 2, 1773, wife Elizabeth, Exec. Thomas (brother), Test. Mary, daughter Orpah, sons Robert, James, Caleb, Joshua. One Robert Harman of Berkeley, married Elizabeth Freeman, March 26, 1669. Daughters Elizabeth, Sarah, Ann, son Robert, may be father of the above Robert. My end goal is to find the parents of one Stephen Harman who was born in 1779, either in Virginia or North Carolina, married Lucinda Joslin (B. Amherst Co., Va., 1779). Their marriage took place in 1799 in Garrard Co., Ky. Does anyone know whether these Harmans came from Western Kentucky, Va. border or from Pennsylvania, or elsewhere. Any help is much appreciated. Florence in Sacramento, CA.

    3. I want to apologize for the confusion I might have caused in inquiring about Berkeley Parish when I meant Precinct. Winslow called it Parish. I meant was there a written history of Berkeley Precinct. I am trying to locate records of William and Rebecca Wiate's children. he died in 1687. His children were Elizabeth, John, Sarah, Samuel, and Thomas. Born between 1676-1684. John is my line. Would land plats for this area be in Virginia. Since he died in 1687 would that also be in Virginia. I have found no records for him. He did give his children land. Elizabeth married a Jones. Sarah married a Pierce. 3. Found in thebook;Old Albemarle and it's absentee landlords;page 575; Some residents of the upper part of Perquiman's precinct inthe year 1721; Prior to the establishment of Gates county in 1778 Perquimans precinct and County corresponded to the present boundaries of Perquimans county except that included in a narrow strip of land, a few miles wide, on what is now the extreme eastern border of Gates county. This is sometimes referred to a s the Upper part of Perquimans , and on May 18, 1721, some of the inhabitants of this section of the then Precinct presented a petition or protest to the authorities, to which they signed their names. This petition gives the names,of course,of so many residents of that part of the precinct. They were, as near as can be made out, as follows; Thomas Bosell(Boswell) 18;William Bosell(Boswell) 18; Howard Modlin;Andrew Reed 139; Samuel Nicholson 116;Nathaniel Nicholson 2; Christopher Nicholson 116;Zachzriah Nixon 116;Michs Morpell; Thomas Montague 108;Jeames Hibuinos. 2. Le Bateman
    3. Is there a reliable printed copy of the History of Berkeley Parish. Ellen Goode Winslow mentioned information from it, but she had inaccurate information in her history. My ancestor Elizabeth Wiatt was the daughter in law of James Oates, yet she called her his wife. Her parents were John and Rachel Calloway Wiatt. She was at least three years of age when James the Old died 6/Oct/1703. How much more information in her book is wrong. Also she quotes from what she claims is the Parish records in all of this. Elizabeth's husband was Joseph Oates d.b.7/Aug/1697. She maintained that Joseph had a brothers named John, and Jesse, and a sister named Mary, but these could not have been his siblings born in 1667, 1669, and 1672. They had to be his father's siblings. 3. My ancestor James OATES practiced law in the court of Thomas HARVE, now he is said to have had a signet ring with his families coat of arms on it. He practiced law in the settlement of Little River Perquimans Co. NC. in 1696. How can I locate these records. Would the NC State Bar have these records. In 1696 he first appeared as an attorney in the home of Governor Harvy, where court was held and Gov. Harve presided as judge. But from 1698 til his death 6/Oct/1703 court was held in his home. Now Oates-Earl and Related Families by William L. Winebarger said he owned a silver tea set with his Coat of Arms on it. How can I find ut what the Halmark was on this. Where are these type of records kept. Thank you Le Bateman _______________________________________________ Why pay for something you could get for free? 3. Alice, Further to your request for African American family history data, I wonder if you are aware of the 1930s Federal Writers' Project collection: Slave Narratives: A Folk History of Slavery in the U.S. from Interviews with Former Slaves. Over 2,000 slave narratives were collected and more than 170 of them were from North Carolina. These narratives, though artless in many ways, are not only a first-hand account of some of the Nation's tragic history, but also contain some very good generalogical information, and first hand accounts of family history, both slave and master. The original manucscript of this collection is housed int he Rare Book and Special Collections Division of the Library of Congress. Facsimile editions of the collection are available. Universities may have them available on microfilm. In reading through the collection, be mindful that many former slaves being interviewed were hundreds of miles a way from their birth place...so the site of the interview is not necessarily an index to relevancy. Most interviewees identify the county in which they were born.
