    1. Re: [NCPERQUIMANS] genealogy library in Elizabeth City
    2. I haven't been to the new location, but plan to soon. There is a lot of genealogical information in the library. For northeastern NC research it has a gold mines worth of information.

    1. [NCPERQUIMANS] Elwood Lane
    2. Grace A. Gleason
    3. Lisa, Why don't you do a family chart for us of what you DO know about Elwood's family? It would help us help you better if we know what you know. You have told us a lot about them, but in bits and pieces. Do you have a genealogy program (FTM, Brother's Keeper, PAF, etc)? If so, you should be able to do a quick "Descendants Of ________" chart. If not, you really need to get one. One thing that is fairly important in genealogy is organization. Especially when you are dealing with multiple families like the Lanes and the Whites. :-) grace granddaughter of Mary Grace Lane and Raymond Erwin White, Sr.

    3. Hope, Sorry about the name thing. Thank you so much for that information. Do you have info on other Lanes? I have an Elwood Lane who was born around 1825, and is first listed in the 1850 census living with Henry White. He is my direct line, and at this point I am stumped. Evidently the Lanes were not of one particular faith, and not well to do, thus, no wills and church records would be a feat. Any ideas? --- "Charles B. 1. [NCPERQUIMANS] Early Courts and Records
    2. John Collins
    3. The Carolina charter of 24 March 1663 granted Carolina to eight Lords Proprietors. By their first meeting on 23 May 1663 the name of one Proprietor (Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon) was given to Clarendon County being set up on the banks of the Charles River (now the Cape Fear River). This settlement was short-lived, (1665-67) although it was initially the major focus of the Proprietors. The name of another of them (George Monck, Duke of Albemarle) was given to the County immediately to the south of Virginia. On May 16, 1671 Governor Peter Carteret and the Council wrote to the Proprietors about the necessity "for the Erectinge of a towne a thing which we conceive absolutly necessarie to the well beinge of this place." Nothing happened for decades. The first town to be incorporated in Carolina was Bath in 1705 (originally in Bath County, now in Beaufort County). The first town to be incorporated in what had been Albemarle County was Edenton (in Chowan County) in 1722, which had been authorized by an Act of Assembly in November 1712 "to promote the building of a Court House to hold the Assembly in, at the fork of Queen Anne's Creek, commonly called Matchacamack Creek in Chowan Precinct", had the first lot sold on 1 September 1715, and was known as the Town on Queen Anne's Creek from 1715 to 1722, when it was renamed in honor of the recently deceased Governor, Charles Eden (1673-1722). By 1668 Albemarle County was divided into four Precincts: Chowan, Perquimans, Pasquotank, and Currituck. For a period of about 10 years (1679-89) Perquimans was renamed as Berkeley Precinct: John Lord Berkeley and Sir William Berkeley (Governor of Virginia) were two of the original eight Proprietors. Albemarle County ceased to exist as a unit of government in 1689 (although the name frequently continues to occur after this date) and the Precincts became Counties (although frequently still referred to as Precincts). Chowan, now the smallest (in area) county in North Carolina, was originally much larger, even extending south of the Albemarle Sound - several other counties have been split out from it. Court was initially held in private homes, for lack of courthouses. This is probably why early court records are few. The oldest will on record in Carolina is that of Mrs Mary Fortsen, dated January 1664 (now in the Department of Archives & History, Raleigh - as are most of the earliest extant Court Minutes and Court Papers). The Chowan County Courthouse in Edenton houses deeds dating from 1699, Minutes for the General Court of 1684, and an Act of the Assembly of Albemarle dated 1689. The Perquimans County Courthouse in Hertford has deeds dating from 1685. The Library from Hayes (in Chowan County just outside Edenton - now at UNC, Chapel Hill) includes some seventeenth century papers. The first courts were formed in Perquimans in or before 1679, meeting in private homes. In 1722 a site on Perquimans River then known as Phelps Point was chosen for establishing a courthouse; however, one was not constructed until sometime between 1726 and 1730. It appears on the Mosely map (1733 - now at UNC, Greenville) in the middle of the countryside: Hertford grew up around it and was incorporated in 1758. The Moseley map is particularly useful because it includes the names of land owners: copies are available from the Friends of the Joyner Library - I think they cost $15. The present Perquimans County Courthouse dates from 1825. The architecturally famous Chowan County Courthouse in Edenton dates from 1767. The original courthouse was the first public building constructed in Queen Anne's Town: it was situated on the south side of King Street (at the top of what is now the Courthouse Green) and was first used on 31 July 1716. The fact that the session was immediately adjourned to meet later the same day at a private home, as was the August session, suggests that building was not yet finished. The first session entirely held and completed in the courthouse was on 29 July 1718. The building cost £279.17s.6d. The Virginian William Byrd described this courthouse in 1728: "Justice herself is but indifferently Lodged, the courthouse having much the air of a Common Tobacco-House". 3. This is a long shot, but one I have to make in solemn hope that it will produce the needed information. Here goes.... Among the siblings of my great grandfather, John Wesley Trueblood I, were three brothers: Henry Trueblood, Ephriam Trueblood and Exum Trueblood, Jr. (Exum Sr. was their father). I believe Henry Trueblood's mother was Nancy Markham, but the mother of Ephriam and Exum, Jr. was someone they identified as "Mary" on their marriage certificates. I have very little information at all on Henry, Ephriam, Exum Jr., and Exum Sr. Back in 1955/1956, when I was 14/15 years old, I recall seeing in a house (since demolished) located next door to Mr. Emmett Stallings (my uncle) and across the street from Mr. Elliott, in Chapanoke, a family Bible recording the names and vital data for Exum Trueblood and Henry Trueblood (and possibly Ephriam Trueblood), and related families. Although I knew I had a direct linkage to Henry, Ephriam and Exum Trueblood, at the age or 14/15 I had little interest in genealogy and aside from recognizing the names, took no other notice. Now this information is vitally important in closing a large gap in my knowledge of my great great uncles. Would anyone happen to know about this Bible, have access to it, or otherwise able to provide me with information of these Trueblood family members? I would be enormously grateful. 3. Hi: I just sent a message but I don't think it went through -- if you get that's better than not getting one. The Weeks Website has a lot of Perquimans data on it. http://donnac55.tripod.com/thomasweeksfamilywebsite/index.html _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
