Hello list I wonder if someone might be able to help me with the parents of Jonathan Morgan who is born 1813-1846. His '"will" states that his wife was Cynthia , and they had a son Daniel W. Morgan. Does anyone have information on this line? Alice Griffin
Anyone, After a fellow researcher went back over the 1850 census for Jeremiah ROBINSON on FTM and also ancestry.com - one site looks like he was born in NC, the other looks like SC. On the 1800 census index there is a Jeremiah ROBINSON's listed in NC: Perquimans County Who was this man? SR

We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com Please excuse the cross postings, but we just published poorhouse information about a great many counties in NORTH CAROLINA. Our partial list of counties known to have poorhouses includes: Beaufort/Buncombe/Burke/Cabarrus/Caswell/Cleveland/Craven/Cumberland/Davidso n/Duplin/Edgecombe/Granville/Guilford/Halifax/Iredell/Johnston/Lenoir/Lincol n/Mecklenburg/Montgomery/Moore/Nash/NewHanover/Northampton/Orange/Richmond/R ockingham/Rowan/ Rutherford/Stokes/Surry/Warren/Wayne Our list of counties for which the NC State Archives has poor relief and/or poorhouse records includes: Alexander/Ashe/Bertie/Beaufort/Buncombe/Carteret/Chatham/Cherokee/Cleveland/ Craven/Currituck/Davie/Edgecombe/Granville/Guilford/Hyde/Iredell/Lincoln/Mon tgomery/Nash/NewHanover/Northampton/Orange/Pasquotank/Perquimans/Person/Polk /Rowan/Rutherford/ Sampson/Stanley/Surry/Union/Wake/Wayne/Yadkin We have provided more historical notes from the archives on the page with their holdings listed. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on NORTH CAROLINA on the table of states. If you will scroll down to the section on "Local Notes", you will find the poorhouse list; and then scrolling down to "Records", you will see the archives holdings list. These entries are marked with yellow NEW arrows. (NOTE: If you have visited the site recently, you may have to click on REFRESH on your browser to see the new information.) There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)
Don't know where they are buried.
In regards to your complaint about Ancestry.com. ........YES i have been the victim of their questionable business practices too. I bought a 30 trial from them for $20 and was under the impression tat unlss I contacted them to continue that It asfr 30 days only. I was told that I was mistaken... On the beginning of the 3rd month I realized that they were continuing to take the $20 from my visa checking account. I thought that it would be a problem easily corrected.BOY was I wrong.. I was met with distain and unconcern... I never did get any of my money back and it took until the 4th month until it was stopped. GOOD LUCK Jennifer
I'm sorry, I don't know how this got deleted. Just typing too fast, I guess *g* >I signed up for their free > trial membership. I called the 800 number last week to cancel my membersship, and a girl that worked there said, "You have until the 15th; you might as well > take advantage of it"
I rarely post to the lists, and I never complain, but... Has anyone else been reamed by ancestry.com??? I signed up for their free trial membership. I called the 800 number last week to might as well take advantage of it." I have a note here to call them Monday again to cancel, and I get this e-mail that they've just taken $70.00 ($69.95) out of my bank account!!! So, I called them. Of course, they are claiming they are in no way at fault, and say it will take 20 days???? to credit the money back to my account?? It took them 20 seconds to take it out, and let me tell you, when my husband gets home from work, he's going to go berserk! He worked overtime last week because he needed some money this weekend to finish the barn, and, oh my is he going to hit the roof. I am so very disappointed in ancectry.com, as I thought they had better business practices than that, but now I intend not only to contact the BBB on them and file a complaint, I'm going for an all-out boycott of the thieves. Even when you pay for a subscription, they still try to make you pay more to access certain areas. It's pathetic. I spend hours getting as much information as I can and it's posted on my Web site, free for all researchers, as it should be. Thanks for letting me bend your ears. Will, I have the children of David L's line Elisha and Thomas. Elisha Copeland and Catherine Winslow moved from Chowan Co to Rich Square, Northampton Co, NC. Most of Thomas's sons migrated to Northampton, except for Joseph. What I have can be found in Hinshaw's Quaker encyclopedia under Piney Woods and Rich Square Meetings there. I presume you have seen the Copeland info on the web (Descendants of Lawrence Copeland). All the early northeast NC Copelands go to him it appears or so some think. They have Thomas Copeland (1765-1862) connected but I don't think it is proven. The line is proven to Thomas Copeland. I don't have any siblings, etc. that I can add to your info at this time. (Thomas Copeland is also my line and I am originally from Rich Square via Eagletown where I think Elisha and Catherine lived. I live in Raleigh now.) Al

Only the surname index, however. I'm wondering if there are any printed census books for Perquimans and Chowan that I could buy? If so, please keep me in mind if you find out who's publishing these, and send me their address. thanks for your reply. I have his son Hugh Copeland who married 1896 to Lucille Ethel Evans in the home of Henry Newby of Hertford. Their daughter Bessie Merrill Copeland was born October 15, 1915 and married William Winford Speight (1911-1995). They moved to Miami, Dade County, Florida, where Bessie was killed August 4, 1980 by a drunk driver. Her remains were returned to North Carolina, and she was buried at Cedarwood Cemetery with most of her family. Bessie was my wife's maternal grandmother. Her children were: A. Arthur Duke Speight, who lives in East Tennessee near Greenville. B. Richard Speight, who lives in Maryland near Washington D.C. C. Rachel Ann Speight - born 1943. Married Armando Torano Jr. 1962. He died in Manchester, TN on June 15, 1994. Their children: 1. Brenda Torano - born 1963. Resides in Manchester. 2. Valarie Rachel Torano - born 1964. My wife. We live in Hillsboro, TN, and have two sons Robert and Thomas. 3. Armando Torano III - lives in Manchester. D. Harriet Priscilla Speight - married Harold Johnson. They live in Manchester as well. They have two adult children, Wade and Connie Johnson. I don't have all of Hugh Copeland's siblings. Seems there was one named William Walter Copeland and another named Arthur, but don't recall. Bessie's siblings included Maurice Copeland, Lula Copeland, Lucy Copeland, "Buster" Copeland, who died in 1995. I don't know his real first name but it may have been Arthur or Duke. Hi Will, I checked the 1850 census for Perquimans and Pasquotank, but do not find your William H and Margaret Speight or there son Wilson E.. I find William J age 32 and Penelope (Goodwin) Speight age 23 on page 27. Then I find the family of Henry age 28 with wife Margaret age 28 with children WILSON E age 3 Martha L age 7 and Ann R 2 with a James WHITE age 10 in the household. This is on page 9. Six houses down ther is a John W age 38 with wife Sarah P age 36 and children Uriah W 13, Elizabeth J 11, Sarah A 10, Martha L 6, John 1. Henrietta age 15. In the same househol ar Amos Lane 17, an Rebecca Ward age 12. On Page one I find in the household of John Long 50, Elizabeth Long 37, John 15, Sarah 9, Joseph 7, Nancy 3 PENNY SPEIGHT age 9 All of these are in Perquimans Co In Pasquotank the is a David F Speight age 21 in the household of Elisha H Jones 31and wife Sarah age 30 In my book of Perquimans Co Abstracts of Wills 1761-1864. There is not a William or a Wilson Speight, buth there is a Grizzell, Isaac, Jemimah and Jeremiah. IN my book of North Carolina Bible Records there is nothing on the Speight family nor are there any Speights in the Chowan book of wills. Are you sure William married to Margaet is who you need or might it be that Henry and Margaret that have a three year old named Wilson E? In my Tombstones and Epitaphs, most of the Speight are buried in the Episcopal Church Cemetery in Hertford and The Old Episcopal Cemetary in Elizabeth City, But U R Speight born 1835 doed 1912 and his wife Eliza S died 1859 age 21 years are buried in Cedarwood Cemetery, Hertford. this must be Uriah W son of John W. Dates seem to be right. This book is not complete, I have found that the Quaker Cemetary at Up River is only half done and there are many many small family plots along any road you travel through the county. I know they are not in this book. Hope all of this is some help to you Hope
Hi, I would greatly appreciate a lookup for the Speight surname in the 1850 Perquimans census. I'm curious to see which other Speights my wife's gg grandfather William H. Speight b. circa 1822, is living near. I don't have his age according to census records. His wife was Margaret Wallace and they were married in Perquimans in 1840. A son was Wilson E. Speight born before 1850. Thanks Will ===== JOIN THE BOYCOTT AGAINST TYSON CHICKEN! Yep, that be him, but he and Keziah were still living in 1900, and should be on the census, according to what I was told by a Copeland researcher. Any Minis families living in that area circa 1900? Charles Evans died before 1896 and his widow Catherine (Minis) Evans remarried to Henry Newby, who lived in Hertford in 1896. My wife's great-grandparents Hugh Copeland (David's son) and Lucille Ethel Evans were married in his home in 1896. Can someone do a census lookup for me? I need to find some information on Benjamin W. Elliott or any B. W. Elliott listed in NC's census records. The dates that I am looking for is 1800 to 1820. I would like to know what the census reports have such as children, spouse, occupation, etc. I have been stuck on Benjamin W. for sometime and have had no luck in finding much on him. My B.W. Elliott married Sarah C. (Unknown last name). B. W. is from Perquimans County NC. He later went to Georgia then to Alabama. Any help that you can provide would be greatly appreciated! Thank you and have a great day! David L. Estes Tuscaloosa, Alabama [email protected]
Hi, I have a David Lindley Copeland (1843-1896) father Elisha, mother Catherine Winslow...Is that the one you are looking? Al
