former President Richard M. Nixon's ancestry was Quaker. Does anyone know if his Nixon's were from the Chowan or Perquimans area? There are several CAPPS in the 1790 census in NC. They were in Warren, Hyde, Currituck, Beaufort, and Johnston counties. Cason Capps was in Hyde County. There were many CAPPS in the pre-1790 census...some in Princess Anne County, VA...some on the Eastern Shore area. There was a Matthew Capps in Chowan in 1717. Cason Capps was in Hyde in 1783. Richard was there...listed in 'CAPPS Company', 1786. Wow...there was a William Capps in Elizabeth City County, VA (now Hampton) in 1624! Well...looks like we may have an immigrant ancestor there! It would be quite logical for family to move on down the coast to Hyde County from there. Interesting that he ended up in Orange County...guess he got tired of the swamps. let me know what more you want. Carolyn p.s...btw...as most Outer Bankers know, Hyde county is pronounced 'HOID'! Hi! Thanks for the reply. I know about the Currituck Capps and Hyde Co. also. However, I have never been able to connect to any of these. The Cason Capps in Orange County just shows up about 1782 or so. I found a record of Richard Capps, dec'd. in loose records of the Secretary of State. The records were in book form. It showed Richard dec'd, wife and unborn child. This was about 1766, which is the time frame that the Orange Co., Cason Capps would have been born. The record showed Robert and John Capps as exec.s. Now, I can take the William Capps, the immigrant's line into Currituck Co., however something goes haywire here. The Hyde Co., Capps connect to Marmaduke Capps (wife Elizabeth). Marmaduke is also in Currituck Co. Also, there is a John Capps in Warren Co., along with Francis Capps. Francis Capps seems to be the son of Orasha Capps (Bute Co., records) this would be Francis Capps wife Henrietta. His son, Francis Capps had a son Hillary Capps. Now, I find my Orange Co., Capps at estate sales, etc. in Warren Co. The John Capps in this area is going to go back into Virginia at some point. There is a record of a John Capps will with a James Cason connection. Now, there is a John Capps in Northampton Co., N.C. This guy has to have something to do with the John, Richard (dec'd) and Robert including wife's unborn child that shows up in Perquimins Co. I need to know the name of this unborn child - hopefully it will be Cason Capps. Now, why can I connect all the other Capps and I get nowhere with Cason in Orange Co., N.C.? The best bet is Richard's unborn child. Yes, this is a long shot! My Cason Capps has to belong to someone. I have studied those Hyde Co., records and it just doesn't go together. Why does my Cason have a daughter Mary that is a Quaker? Why is he surrounded by Capps with German names such as in Warren Co.? What is my problem? My Cason has caused much frustration in my life for 15 years - wow, talk about a brick wall! He does business with a Rich (Riech), he marries Mary Rogers who's father was William Rogers. He was killed in the Rev. War. Most of Cason Capps children are named after the Rogers family: William Rogers Capps, James Rogers Capps, Robert R. Capps could be named after a Capps, now, the first born child was Richard Capps who disappears about 1834. His daughters, Mildred - not a Rogers name. Elnor or Nelly, and little Quaker, Mary. There are Capps Quakers from Perquimins and Pasquotank. Maiden names Smith and Saunders. What are they doing in Orange Co.? There is also a Smith Capps, Greenbury Capps, ten million William Capps. I can take Cason Capps clear down to my father - wow, they left a wonderful trail. Why didn't Cason's father do the same thing? Maybe he was the dead Richard in Perquimans. Also, a Robert Cope shows up in Orange Co. after 1792. He marrys a Whittset and then a Coleman. He has to connect to my Cason. The Whittset and Coleman names travel together into Tennessee along with Cason's 2 sons, William Rogers Capps and James Rogers Capps. Yes, William belongs to me. I have a William in every generation. These two sons were named after William Rogers (Rev. War) and his son James Rogers (also in Rev. War). Isn't this a big mess? Also, the Cason name goes back to the immigrant William Capps time frame. Sorry if I am confusing the issue. Thanks again for your help. Do you know if there are any land deeds for Capps in Perquimins Co.? That is the only way I have been able to connect everyone is with land deeds (et al ones)! Joyce
Hi, Joyce...are you sure they were in Perquimans? When I saw the name, I thought, Currituck, as that's where the Capps I knew were. I looked in our old Albemarle (1994) area phone book, and sure enough, all the CAPPS were on the Outer Banks...either in Currituck or Dare Counties. There was a Richard Capps in some early VA records, and in Hyde Co., NC...not far from the Outer Banks....will keep checking. Just wondered if you had seen something pertaining to Perq. for them...Carolyn p.s...I remember Casons in Currituck, too! Joyce L Ford wrote: > > Hi Carolyn, > Can you help me with marriage records? I think the Jacob Goodwin that married 'Peache' is in my line...does anyone know who she was? My other GOODWIN brick wall is Leah Goodwin's parents. She md. Exum GRIFFIN in 1846 Chowan. Her mother was Jemima, father possibly Myles or Myers GOODWIN. I'm almost to the point of starting up area-wide one-name studies...to see which families go with which...there were so many Chappells, Goodwins, and many others of the same names, and I'd love to see how they all fit together. What do you all think? The first record is for 15 December, 1913. It also gives the spouse (if they had one) parents(if known) and where and when born. --- "J. Hi Lisa, My Lanes go into Crawford Co., Missouri about 1850. I don't think your Lane line is part of my Lanes. Talk about a giant brick wall - I can't get my Lanes past 1850 and this has been going on for 15 years. Thanks for taking time to answer. I appreciate that. Joyce [email protected]
Well, I'm glad to see some chatter on this list!!! I hope we can help one another break through our walls. I am trying to find the parents for Elwood LANE who was born abt 1825. He is listed in the 1850 census as a laborer for Henry White along with several other young men. I have a hunch he was related to John and Margaret LANE who had a daughter Pheriba. As it turns out, Elwood marries a "pauper" who is in the Lacy household next door to John LANE. I think Elwood was coming over to visit his family and met the girl next door. Also, if anyone needs some death dates looked up, I have the Perquimans COunty Death Records, books 3-33. There's nothing REAL old though. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Tax Center - online filing with TurboTax http://taxes.yahoo.com/
Hi, Where does your Lane line go? Also, does your Goodwin line have any Jacob Goodwin's (Gooding, Goodin) in it? Thanks, Joyce
Hi, I like "brickwalls" - it gets the message across! Sure has made interesting connections. Joyce
Hi Carolyn, Can you help me with marriage records? I am trying to find records for Capps (Cope, Coppe) and Cason (Ceason, etc.) in Perquimans Co. I do not have good sources for researching in this county. I would appreciate any and all information. Joyce [email protected]
Hi, Are there any Capps or Casons in any of the books you have? I have a very hard time researching Perquimans Co. I would appreciate any help you could give me. There was a Richard Capps who died about 1766 or so and left a widow and unborn child. Also, probable brothers, John and Robert. I am trying to tie in Cason Capps in Orange Co., N.C. He seems to come from no where. However, he could be the unborn child of Richard Capps above. If you know anyone with info , please left me know. This is most definitely a big brick wall. Joyce
Carolyn, VERY good. I'd like to make yet another suggestion - one I believe people on these lists used to practice but have gotten away from more often than not. When someone sends information or a request, it would be helpful if, at least the first time a surname is used in that email, to place it in ALL CAPS. That way I can scan each and every email I get to see if it pertains to me or if I can help someone with one of those surnames. If I get a long email with surnames galore buried within it (or worse yet - all in lower case) I delete it without reading it thoroughly. These old eyes can't take the strain and sometimes the ones with the 'old' eyes, just might have what you need.
