Carolyn, I'm replying to the list so that everyone will know that my response was not a personal attack on you or your comment. Instead it was meant to let those new people know that it's perfectly ok to not know all there is to know....sort of an affirmation, if you will. I just saw the opening for those not in the know to misunderstand. And now MY apologies if I made you feel like you were offensive. It's great to see the activity on the list. You're all great people. Please forgive me. I have a reason I'm feeling so gung-ho about this right now; my folks' 50th anniversary is next March, and I have a few brick walls I've been trying to get through for 20+ years, and all of a sudden, I have a deadline of sorts. So, please, excuse my enthusiasm. I really do love to help people with their research, and I love the sharing that can go on between 'cousins' on these email lists. By the way, does everyone know that the 1880 census is out on cd and is available at most Family History Centers? It is a great source. It can also be purchased from the Church for only $49...the whole US Census for 1880! Go to lds.org, down on the left go to 'Order Church Materials'...then go to 'Individual Shoppers'. Click on 'Family History'. and then 'Software Products'...there are many good things you can get from the Distribution Center...toll free #, shipping costs are already included, I believe. Again, I am sorry if I've caused any hard feelings or irritation. I will try to do better. Carolyn
To all: When I was brand new in genealogy I asked a lot of questions that must have irritated some people. I'm sure I still do. It's just my opinion, but I don't think there's any such thing as a dumb question. Some of you know about all the on line sources for information but the newcomers don't. There's still a lot of sources I don't know about and some new ones that I'm sure most of us would like to know about. I'm all for people asking for whatever they need. That's how we learn this stuff. It would be awful if we ran people off just because they didn't already know it all. Just my opinion. Are there others? Shirl in OH
Thank you, Shirley. Now I get it. Sometimes in my excitement, I forget that there are many just starting out...you are so right, you can't learn if you don't ask! So, ask away, everyone! Be sure and send responses to the list, until it gets more personal, so others with the same names can join in if they have any queries or info to share. Thanks, all. Joyce, just to let you know I have not located anything else yet. Let me look at a couple more books and will get back with you. Cindy
Hi Cindy, Thanks for looking for me. I apreaciate your help. Joyce
I have found the marriage record and have visited the graves of Addie and Cornelius Nixon once while in NC. I am really trying to find out something about the children and who they married. Thanks much. Alice In a message dated 4/10/02 6:45:53 PM US Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: > > I didn't see anything for spouses, but I did find > Addies death information. I think I may have put this on one of my emails, but may have gotten lost in the hussle... If you have internet access, please, before asking for look-up help, it would be great if we would check a few websites out before posting. There really are some great sources on the www, and it would be very helpful and less time-consuming if we could know where you've already checked. Here are some of my favorite sites...and remember, these are not 'primary sources'...so make sure you do your homework after finding the clues... familysearch.org genealogy.com ancestry.com genforum.com...they have both surname and place forums... USGENWEB state and county pages A couple of these sites are fee-based, but they do have a lot of free info you can get to. Does anyone else have any favorite sites? Thanks, Carolyn
Don't think they were. They may have been in the PA. area... Al
Hi Cindy, Wow, that info is interesting. Especially the John Capps and John Cason. Know anymore about John Cason? The problem with the Hyde Co. Cason Capps is that my Cason Capps was already in Orange Co., N.C. buying land in that time frame. These Capps descend from Marmaduke and Elizabeth Capps that were once in Currituck Co. The names are the same - Richard, Henry, Cason, etc. I even find an Alice in Hyde Co. She is in one of the census records with an older woman living with her. I have tried to find more info here, however I have not been able too. I sent for the grantee/grantor index from that county and they sent me a very goofy printout that was not what I wanted. Alice is a very important name and has to tie in somewhere. I just cannot connect the Cason in Orange Co., with the ones in Hyde Co. I believe there is even a Francis Capps Moore in Hyde Co. records. The Moore name appears on Orange Co. deeds. The name Francis is prevalient in my Capps line. You will also find the identical names in Georgia. I will think about all the P.A. Co. names you mentioned. This is a real challenge. There is no way I can figure this out alone. I do appreciate your help. Get some sleep and have a great day tomorrow! Thanks again, Joyce
Joyce, sorry about my message this morning....I'm flakier in the a.m. because I work graveyards. I should have looked at the other few sources I have. I know you said you checked Hyde Co...but that is where Cason is at in the state census of 1784-1787. Is this time frame right for him? p. 73 Hyde Co., listed under number of inhabitant's in Capt. Cason GIBBS' District,Feb. 1786: James CAPPS 2-1-6-0-0 Cason CAPPS 1-4-2-0-0 p. 73 Hyde Co "A list of the Inhabitince of Capt. CAPPS Company of White and Blacks" Richard CAPPS 1-1-2-1-3 John CAPPS 1-1-4-0-0 Is this the correct Cason we are talking about? In Stephen Bradley's "Early NC Records" v 3 shows at estate sale (05 Mar 1778) in Hyde Co. for Bemjamin MORDICK, Jr. as buyers are Cason CAPPS, Richd. CAPPS, John CAPPS and Henry CAPPS. In the Princess Anne Loose Papers, p 142-143 is for a general meeting of the Overseers of the Poor for the parish of Lynhaven held in Kempesville, April 1786. It only list a Margaret CAPPS, sum not given. Also listed is "To Henry CAPPS Son of Richd". No other info given. Other given names of CAPPS in the index are, Abigall, Ann, Charles, Dennis, Dinah, Edward, Elizabeth, George, Horatio, James, Jane, John, Jonathon, Lewis, Margaret, Milly, Pembrook, Solomon, Thorowgood, Tully, William and Willis. Doesn't look like the names are matching up.....probably a very bad idea to suggest for you to look at Princess Anne Co. Listed in "Currituck Co. NC Eighteenth Century Tax and Militia Records", p 99. "A list of the Married men in the County of Currituck that pays a Poll Tax for the year 1779 taken from the Assessment Book" are Enoch CAPPS, John CAPPS and John CASON. I will check in the morning to see if I have anything else that may help.....off work tonight. Going back to bed for some more zzzzz's. Cindy
I didn't see anything for spouses, but I did find Addies death information. She died May 10, 1943 in Perquimans County. It's possible the others were in Chowan or Pasquotank. You can call the Register of Deeds there in Perquimans and they can look to see if they have a marriage record for any of your people on file. They are VERY nice there. --- [email protected] wrote: > Hi folks > Has a register ever been done for the Cedar Woods > Cemetery in Hertford? > Does anyone do lookups at the Perq Co Court House? > > Can anyone in Perquimans County tell me the spouses > of the people listed > below? > Descendants of Wiliam Thomas Nixon of Winfall, NC > ......... 2 Thomas Nixon b: December 1882 > > ......... 2 Nettie G. I have the following URL for genealogies of the Presidents of The United States: http://www.dcs.hull.ac.uk/public/genealogy/presidents/ A quick regression through the NIXON line and the Presidens mother's MILHOUS line only indicated that they were both from the PENN and DEL area. There is no indication that either were from NC nor is there any mention of either being Quaker; however, I have read that the MILHOUS line was Quaker and that information might be found if one downloads the GEDCOM that is available from The University of Hull, UK, the URL of which is available on the pages of the previous listed Hull URL. Are there any Fly, Flythe, Fley, names in the Herford Co., Cemetery? Joyce
Hi again, I am sorry I spelled your name wrong. Joyce
Hi Cindi, I have some info from Princes Anne Co., Va. on Capps. These go back to William Capps the immigrant. William had a son named Robert Capps. Robert died leaving one child, Mary. His wife is unknown. He also had a son, William and one Richard, I think. I am not to sure about Richard. These people inter married into the Woodhouse, Langly, Moore and Cason family - this info could be in the loose records you have - I am not sure. I have a copy of the "Cooper Charts". They have a lot of Capps info on them - Dennis Capps, Currituck Co., John I think owned land on an Island in Currituck Bay. Both of these descend from the immigrant William Capps. I cannot connect Cason Capps to any of these people. That is why I think the dec'd Richard of Perquimins Co., could be the father of my Cason Capps. I have run out of possibilities. Also, it is very possible for Cason to be a middle name - Richard Cason Capps. That is a long shot - very long! Is there a will in the loose records you have that show a Richard Capps? Are there land deeds in the info? There may be one will that lists several children, however, the youngest child's name is missing. This also could be my Cason Capps. Here are some names that could prove to connect to someone. Francis Rudolphus Capps - the name Francis is prevailent in my line. James Nicholas Capps - there is a lot of German names and also French names such as Cicero Adron Lafate Capps - I have tried to connect some of these names without sucess. The history of Orange Co., N.C. is extremely interesting. The original settlers came from Penn. It has been said that they were first generation Americans and they actually walked from Penn. to Orange Co., N.C. A mixture of German, Scotch Irish, Quakers, etc. The names Hunter, Harmon Husband, Neele were some of our first patriots. A lot of these affiliated names are found in very early Perquimins records. Cason Capps married Mary Rogers. Her father was William Rogers. His property was next to property of Michael Holt. The Battle of Alamance was fought on the Holt property. It is very possible that Cason Capps was the son of one of the immigrants that walked from Penn. to Orange Co., N.C. I do not know what route they took when they walked to Orange Co., N.C. Orange Co. more than likely was Grandville Co., at that time. Perquimins has all of the affiliated names - Moore, Gardner, Hunter - they all connect to Cason Capps in some way - some through the Rogers family. My 2 greats grandmother was named Alice Vandalia Lucy Capps. Her name is interesting. Her father always named his children after Capps relatives. Alice was his first child. One of his sons was William Lemuel Capps - what he was doing was naming his children after his parents and his wife's parents. William Capps was his father - Lemuel Stout was his wife's father. Alice is the only Alice in my intire line. Vandalia is a native American name, Lucy is the name of Alice's grandmother. and a John Anderson in early Perquimins Co.,Steven Andrew, John Anderson, Henry Grandville Cicero Capps - all are named after relatives. I find a Steven Andrew records - early 1700's. It appears that names were very important in this family. There was a daughter Sarah Francis Capps - named after my 3 great grandmother's sister, Sarah and her brother Francis Stout. Always duel names like this. maybe I am just spinning wheels with all these names, however, most of them show up in early Perquimins Co., records. Do you know if there are any guardianship records for Perquimins Co.? Maybe there would be a record of the dec'd Richard Capps unborn child. I have tried every angle I can think of and none of them work. I really appreciate your reply. Each reply is so important. There are always clues in them. I appreciate the time you took to help me out. Joyce
At familysearch.org, they have a pedigree for him. One of his gg..grandfathers was from Belmont Co., OH...which was one of the big Quaker areas...many of the NC Quakers went there from time to time. This is on the Milhous side. Willie D Smith wrote: > > former President Richard M. Nixon's ancestry was Quaker. Joyce, I don't know if this will help but have you looked into Princess Anne Co., VA yet? There are a lot of CAPP'S and CASON'S. I have a copy of Princess Anne County Loose Papers 1700-1789....looking in the index there is no Cason CAPPS but several other CAPP'S. Cindy Shepard
