Hi, Where can I find the Oath of Allegience info on internet? Thanks, Joyce
I mistyped: Jeremiah, John and Noah Speight were in Perquimans - NOT Gates - in 1820. Noah was in Gates in 1830. Don't know about 1840 yet. I've been told that Jeremiah Speight was son of William Speight and Ann Phelps of Gates County. Thanks again, Will ----- Original Message ----- From: "Willie D Smith" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, May 21, 2002 8:19 AM Subject: Re: [NCPERQUIMANS] Lookup needed: Noah Speight 1820-1850 Perquimanscensus > William M is actually William Henry Speight. William M is actually William Henry Speight. Apparently William H. died before 1870 as Margaret seems to be head of household according to the 1870 census index here at the library, with a "William" (Wilson) E. Speight age about 24 nearby. LeRoy Speight's family Bible records indicate that the parents of William Henry Speight born 1821 who married Margaret Wallace were Noah Speight and Jemima Elliott, who were married in Perquimans in 1815. So.....I've got to find out whether or not Noah Speight was a son of the Jeremiah Speight who died 1844 in Perquimans. Noah was in Gates County in 1820 and 1830. Not sure about 1840. If Jemima is on 1840, it would indicate Noah was dead by that time. Would like to find a Gates census for 1830 and 1840 to see if Jeremiah was living near Noah and Jemima. William Henry Speight who married Martha Priscilla Boyce was my wife's great-grandparents. Her grandfather was William Winford Speight born 1911. Hi Jennifer, Your list of names is interesting. Pennington is also spelled Penson, Pen'zen. There is a Thomas Pinson in early Jamestown, Va. Records, listed in the book of the living and the dead. Some say the Pinsons are descended from Martin Alonzo Pin'Zen, a navagator and ship builder. He goes back to 1492. He furnished the crew that sailed with Columbus. His family owned the ship Pinta, which is the female gender of Pin'zon. Others descend from Edwardo Pinson a shoemaker on Fleet Street in London. I have never found any of these people in Perquiman Co. However, that does not mean there aren't any. The spelling of the name is found in a book called Grassy Creek Baptist Church which was in Caswell Co., N.C. Also, what Lane line are you connected with? I can't get my Lanes past 1850 in Crawford Co., Missouri. Pleasant A. Lane married Mary Ann Pinson there. This line of Pinsons come out of Kentucky to Edgar Co., Ill., to Crawford Co., Mo. Hope something here will help you. Joyce

Does anyone know how to contact the host of the USGENWEB PROJECT site for Perquimans? The email address on his page doesn't seem to reach him. thanks, diane
Hi Willie Sorry the books I have are not that current, they only go from 1715 to about 1800. Tried to email you a couple of days ago. Do you have any probate records on Perquimans circa 1844 pertaining to a Jeremiah Speight? Someone told me ol' Jeremiah died in Perquimans in 1844, but I'm not sure if it is the same Jeremiah cited as a brother by Josiah Speight in his Chowan County willI of 1783. I strongly doubt it. I suspect the Jeremiah who died 1844 to be the father of Noah Speight and John Speight. Thanks, Will
If there are transcripts for Perquimans wills, I would like to know if there is one for Shadrach Wallace, WB-F/270 who died 1837. I've had a difficult time tracing this Wallace family. All I know about him is that he married Rebeckah Barber in Perquimans on April 7, 1821. I likewise have no information on the Barber family, and haven't any idea if Rebeckah was still living in 1850. I'd like to hear from anyone searching Wallace and Barber families in Perquimans. Thanks, Will
Hi Jennifer I have all your family names connected to my Perry family except Broughton and Pennington. Who are you looking for specifically. These family names go back to 1750. Joy in Wisc. Does anyone have info on William Whitehead who married Christian Speight 13 October 1835 in Perquimans County? This is an interesting name. There was a Christian Speight in Gates County 1820 with John Speight on the same page (16), and a child of William Henry and Margaret (Wallace) Speight was Christian F. Speight, born about 1852 in Perquimans. Thanks, Will Smith
Thanks, "Henry" is my wife's ggg grandfather. He is William Henry Speight who married Margaret Wallace, dau. of Shadrach Wallace and Rebeckah Barber, in 1844. I have as the birthdate for William Henry Speight as December 25, 1821. Margaret was born 1822. I believe Wilson E Speight to be the same "William" E Speight from 1870 Perquimans census index I found. The James White, age 10, in their household is interesting. Wilson/William E. Speight married a Forehand or Haskett (forget which). Their son William Henry Speight born about 1872 married Margaret Priscilla Boyce, dau. of Baker Perry Boyce Jr., and they were the parents of William Winford Speight (1911-1995), my wife's maternal grandfather who married Bessie Merrill Copeland (1915-1980), dau. of Hugh Copeland and Lucille Ethel Evans, about 1938 probably in Perquimans or Pasquotank County. We haven't found a marriage record for them. John W. Speight is said to have been John WHITE Speight, and I think he married Sarah WINSLOW. I think he was the son of a Jeremiah Speight who died 1844 in Perquimans. This Jeremiah could have been Jeremiah Jr. as I doubt if this is the same Jeremiah Speight who was brother of Josiah Speight who died 1783 in Chowan County. I don't know how many Jeremiah Speights are listed as having lived in the Gates/Chowan/Perquimans area between 1783 and 1850. "Old" Jeremiah probably died between 1800 and 1820. He's supposedly a son of William Speight and Ann Phelps. What I am thinking is that Noah Speight, who would have been born about 1790-1795 if he married 1815, is the BROTHER of Jeremiah (Jr?) who appears in records pertaining to the Elliotts, who are the inlaws of Noah Speight. I have nothing to indicate when the Jeremiah Speight, brother of Josiah Speight of Chowan County, died, but as I said, he probably died after 1800 and before 1820, and the Jeremiah Speight who is in the 1820 Gates County census is probably his son. Just by looking at the 1820 Perquimans census, I gather that Jeremiah Speight was probably the father of both Noah Speight and John Speight. One of these men is probably the father of John White Speight born about 1812. Since Noah married in 1815, the John Speight from the 1820 census is more likely John W. Speight's father. Without looking at probate records for the Jeremiah Speight who died 1844, it's hard to tell. If any of you have additional info on these families, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks for your help! I have a Henry Newby I am curious about. Apparently he married Catherine (Minis) Evans, widow of Charles Evans, sometime between 1880 and 1896, as Charles' and Catherine's daughter, Lucille Ethel Evans, married in 1896 in the home of Henry Newby to Hugh Copeland, son of David L. and Keziah (Chappell) Copeland. Marriage license was signed by "Mrs. Henry Newby". I am very interested in the Evans and Newby families. I did have Charles Evan's lineage but have since lost it. I need to find out when this man died. Lucille Ethel Evans was born about 1876 and died in the 1950's. Jennifer, I am a descendant of the Skinner line. I have a Richard Skinner b. 1747 in Perqimans Co. NC who married a Rachel Perry on 12-11-1770. Richard, his father James and I believe another brother Joshua all signed the Oath of Allegiance to the State of NC on 11-15-1777. This document was recorded in the 1778 Stte Oath of Allegiance Book Yeopim District Perqiman's Co. NC. Their signatures are available to see on line. James Skinner was born in Perquimans's Co. Nc on 12-5-1715 and married a ? Price .I beleive that James may have also been married b4 because ? Price was born about 1736. I am trying to connect Richard to, who I believe , is a son , John Price Skinner. John Price was born in 1772 in Va. she married a ? Parker and then married 2nd a Rachael Coggeshall from which my line continues. I do have a few more generations back from James if you would like that information too. Please email me for any other information or if you can add to mine let me hear from you. Thanks and sincerely Jennifer

Hi Hope, Do you have any Capps, Cap, Cope, names in your Perquiman Co. will book? I am looking for a Richard, Robert, John or Francis Capps. I think they should be in the Chowan, Perquiman, area around 1760-66 time frame. They may have left wills or estate records or guardianship records in one of these two places. This is really a dead end for me. I think Richard is mentioned in loose records of Perquiman Co. leaving an unborn child. I have not been able to find the rest of the info on Richard, except that John and Robert seem to be connected. I would appreciate any help for looking in your will book. Thanks, Joyce
