David Fanning was a Loyalist Colonel, with a small army of soldiers recruited from the people of central Carolina. These troops terrorized people far and wide throughout the piedmont of North and South Carolina. During one of their raids in Guilford County, they killed one of the McAdow brothers. Later a group of militiamen from Guilford caught Alexander Shannon, a local recruit, visiting his family in the community. The militiamen proceeded to execute Shannon. (1781) Later they discovered that they might be subject to civil prosecution for murder, three of them applied to the assembly for a pardon for their action. James McAdow, a brother of the victim of Fannings troops, Henry Reed, and William Hall were the applicants. Their application was approved, the final voice vote recorded was 50 for and 7 against. ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange GENDEX at http://www.gendex.com/gendex/ has over 1500 databases on line
