Alamance County, NC GILLIAM John Westley Gilliam was born 21 Aug 1840 in the area of Orange County that became Alamance County, NC, son of Robert Gilliam, born 22 Aug 1800-died 1 April 1872 and Martha Walker, born 12 Oct 1812, died 28 Dec 1891. John Westley Gilliam served in the Confederate Army, wounded at Gettysburg and captured by the Union Army. John Westley Gilliam was the founder of Gilliams Academy in 1879...it continued to operate until 1922. He married Mary Jane Leath of the Stoney Creek community on 8 June 1879. Mary Jane Leath died on 16 Dec 1932 at the age of 72. John Westley Gilliam died 12 June 1918 They had twelve children: Bessie Cornelia born 12 Aug 1880, died 11 Feb 1881 Mary Eunice born 7 Nov 1881, died 9 Jan 1946 married J.F.
