Tidbits of History.... Simon Dixon was one of the pioneers in what would one day become Alamance County. He settled in the Snow Camp area from his Pennsylvania home, and began one of the area's first business operations.....a grist mill. The old frame building was constructed in 1753 along the banks of Cane Creek, near the Cane Creek Church. Dixon had a role in the formation of that church also, as he was a leading Quaker in an area settled predominantly by Quakers. The mill is gone now, but it is remembered as a part of the lore of the Snow Camp area. Grist mills like Simon Dixon's were the first business operations in the county. They were necessary as early settlers throughout the county were farmers, and they had to have places to grind their grain. Mills were found in all parts of the county, and many road names are traced back to the mills. Gerringer Mill Road, Dicky Mill Road, Sutphin Mill Road, and others were named because the mills were located on those roads. Sutphin Mill was the name given to a mill which dates back to the same period as Dixon's Mill. It was first known as Lindley's Mill. That mill since has returned to the Lindley family, and in 1981 it was again operating as a grist mill, again known as Lindley's Mill. ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange List archives are at http://lists.rootsweb.com/~archiver/NCORANGE-L/97/
