Mr and Mrs Burwell's Female School, 1837-1857 Hillsborough, NC Who the Burwell's Were..... The Reverend Robert Armistead Burwell (1802-1895) and his wife, Margaret Anna Robertson (1810-1871) were both Virginians of distinguished ancestry from the Petersburg area (Orange, Chesterfield, and Dinwiddie counties). Robert was the son of Col. Armistead Burwell (1777-1841) and Mary Cole Turnbull, and traced his descent back to Major Lewis Burwell 1 (1621-1658) who came to Virginia in 1640. Margaret Anna, or Anna as she was always called, was the daughter of Ann Spotswood (1792-1869) who had married William Bruce Robertson, a Scots merchant. Ann Spotswood was a direct descendant of Gov.
