    3. Orange United Methodist Church Chapel Hill, NC Early records of Orange Church have been lost but it is believed that in 1832 a group of interested people came together under a grapevine located in the general area of the present church. They met to organize a Methodist Church, to be called Orange Church. On 31 October 1836 Alexander Gattis Sr and Thomas King each deeded two acres of land to the trustees of Orange Church. The first building according to tradition was a log cabin. The cabin burned and was replaced by a frame building around 1837. In 1924 this building was torn down and the present church was built. It included the sanctuary and four Sunday School rooms. Additional rooms were added in 1966, and the steeple and porch in 1971. Because of a rapidly growing congregation, and educational wing containing offices, Fellowship Hall, kitchen parlor and Sunday School rooms were annexed in 1988. The first burial in the Church Cemetery was for Alexander Gattis/Gastiss Jr. I do not have a list of graves at Orange United Church Cemetery, but I have searched it for Andrews and King ancestors that might be there. ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange USGenWeb Orange Co, NC Archives site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/orangnc.htm
