From a Johnson Co.IL newpaper the "Vienna Times" 6 Dec 1874 "The bloomer dress is a pair of trousers, very baggy at the knee, abnormally full about the pistol pockets and considerably loose where you strike a match. The article is cut decolette at the south end and the bottom is tied around the ankles or knees to keep out the mice. You can't pull it on over your head as you do your corset but you sit on the floor and pull it on as you do your stockings, one foot in each compartment. You can easily tell which is the right side to put in front by the button on the neck-band."
