    3. There were a large number of German families that settled in the western part of Orange County in the mid 1700's. Many of these came from the PA German settlement. Others came from Germanna in VA. Still others came from the northeast. The PA group was led by George Valentine CLAPP and his brother John Ludwig CLAPP. The Germanna group is believed to have been led by Michael HOLT. Some of the names of these early German settlers include: ALBRECHT/ALBRIGHT, BASON, KLAPP/CLAPP, EPHLAND/EFLAND, FAUST/FOUST, GERHARD, GOERTNER/COURTNER/CURTNER, GRAFF/GRAVES, HOLT/HOLD, KIMBRO/KIMBROUGH, LEINBERGER/LINEBERRY, LONG, LOY, MAY, MOSER, NEASE/NEESE/NEESE, RICH/RIDGE, SCHADE/SHADDIE, SCHEAFER/SHAVER/SHEPHERD, SCHWENCK/SWING, SHARP/SHAEBE, TROLLINGER, STEINER/STONER, WEITZEL/WHITESELL, There were others but this will give you an idea of the amount of Germans involved and a clue to some of the name variations.
