    3. Well according to this tree at ancestry Gilliam was the oldest son... http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:3303291&id=I332 That tree hasn't got Green either ... if the person was correct and John Southard was listed as Green's father I think they may have been "grabbing" any John Southard who fit the time frame. Since I can't get an image of the Bible records I don't know if it just lists a name or if there were dates as well. I've also thought that if John Southard was listed in the Bible that maybe there is a missing generation as John would have been 53 when Green was born ... that wouldn't be unheard of and they already had one child quite late. But its possible that John was Green's grandfather .... or this all could just have been shoddy research. Goodness knows I've run into that ! Its like seeing the brass ring and not being able to reach it! Katherine Thank goodness this list is active .... so often I join lists that are not. I've been out of my genealogy for a year .. mostly due to pure frustration over Green Southard as it was this line that I was interested in the most. From the research I'd done before it appears that Macklen was the oldest child. Thank you, Katherine Katherine, I looked at the D.A.R. index listing for John Southard. It states he was in a private in the VA line, b. 9 Sep 1759, Belfield, Brunswick Co., VA, residence Sussex Co., VA, died ante Aug 1840 Orange Co., NC. Spouse Dorothy Gilliam. The only children listed are Gilliam, Maclin, and James. I have found many times that the first son was named for the paternal grandfather. Was the first son John or James? Sandra -----Original Message----- From: ncorange-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ncorange-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Katherine Reece Sent: Tuesday, June 05, 2007 11:39 AM To: NCORANGE@rootsweb.com Subject: [NCORANGE] Searching for Southard Hello ... I'm new to this list. I am searching for my "dead end" ancestor Green W. Southard b. abt 1811. This is the page for him and his children at my website: http://www.katscelticroots.com/fam00156.htm On the 1850 Georgia census he says he was born in VA, however on the 1860 and 1870 Georgia censuses he says he was born in NC. There is a family tree at ancestry that lists a John Southard born Sept 9, 1758 in Beifield VA and died in 1833 in Orange Co., NC as Green's father. I emailed the person who submitted the information and asked him what his evidence was and was told that it was family Bible records, unfortunately I could not get him to email me a copy of the record and further emails have bounced. I have pulled John Southard's will (which thankfully the Alabama archives had) and Green is not mentioned among his children, Green would have been 16 at the time the will was written and I suppose that he could have already done something that could have caused him to be cut out of the will but it really seems unlikely to me. I also have John Southard's Rev War pension file, but there is no family information in it. It does however say John was living in "Orange County, North Carolina, within three or four miles of the Shallow Ford on the Haw River" when his pension was approved in 1832. The pension also lists his birthplace as Belfield VA and not Beifield VA. According to the will John's wife was named Dorothy (maiden name Gilliam?) and his children were Macklen, Polley, Gilliam, Tempey, Charles, James, Carter, and John. Is anyone familiar with this family? 3. Hi, Katherine - Have you tried possible variations of the surname Southard. I looked at a few message boards and some of those are posted for Southard or Southerland, even Southworth, I think. You may be dealing with a surname that became corrupt for some reason. Re: the tree at Ancestry .... you did what you should have done and contacted the person for documentation. They did not provide it, which probably means they never had it and this tree is something that was copied from no telling who or how long ago. My advice is to make a note of it, or print it off, stick it in a folder somewhere and forget it. I know that sounds a bit harsh, but it has been my experience in my own research and in helping others with their research that 75% of the info posted to genealogy websites is not worth the powder it would take to blow it up. You will be far better off asking questions on the list, as you have done, where we really care about getting things right and not about how many names we can get on a site. Also, posting to the Southard message board at Genealogy.com and Rootsweb.com (I think Rootsweb will also get it on the Ancestry board) might get you in touch with some folks that may be able to help you. It has been my experience that the majority of folks that post there either have documentation they are willing to share, or they are in the same boat you are and can't find much of anything. Also, don't overlook what seems like piddly sources ... such as school censuses. I don't know how long it would have taken me to find anything about my grandmother's father had it not been for a school census in Tate County MS. His name was Jonathan Henley Creel, but the census records that I couldn't find had had him as Jonsettian Henry Creal. Talk about corrupting a name! Where that came from is beyond me. Also, when I wanted to know when my Cardwell family really came to Texas (I thought late-1855 and others in the county thought 1859), it was a school census my 3XG-grandfather completed in February 1856 showing two children would be enrolled for the fall semester that proved he was there earlier than 1859. Look for land records, church membership lists, and funeral home records. Orange County NC has good Court Minutes. You might be able to review a film of the Court Minutes through the LDS library in Salt Lake City if you have an LDS site in your area. I'll keep my eyes open for your family. Much luck! You may be dealing with a surname that became >corrupt for some reason. I grew up with the name and boy can it get messed up ... I've been called Suddeth, Sootherd, Southerland (never did get this one) and that was with teachers who saw the name spelled out! Its pronounced Sah-therd btw. The only place I was ever at where they pronounced it right without me telling them was when I was around people who knew my Grandmother Southard, LOL, and they were hoping I had her Apple Cake recipe (which I do and its a doozey!) Southard is a known variation of Southward or Southworth. >My advice is to make a note of it, or >print it off, stick it in a folder somewhere and forget it. I'm about at that point ... John Southard's 1820 census in Orange Co NC shows no male children of the right age for my Green. I'm going to go through John Southard's children in case there was a generation skip I'm interested in *any* Southards (or variations thereof) .... I was hoping someone on this list might have some in their lines. I suppose my next step is to save up some money and get my brother's DNA tested. Thank you, Katherine Southard-Reece
