Look all, I don't want to start a flame war or anything... I don't even need a reply to this, especially on the list.... I enjoyed every one of Marks posts also, but just so you know that not all of 'those people are IDIOTS' I have to tell you this. My cousin picked up one of those virus's sent by the real Idiots. It came in an email that also had a read gedcom from someone she knew. Because she had an unopened email that had Marks email address in it, she unknown to her sent him a virus email. No way would she if she had known it... yes, she has virus software, but it missed it. Because she could not open another attachment which was 'the virus' she asked me about it... I told her it looked like a virus. She immediately started cleaning her machine... stayed up half the night to get it clean. Now, to the point, because she sent Mark one he sent he an email and basically blessed her out and practically called her an idiot.... She apologized and he was still mad and the messages got heated after that. She did not send it to him on purpose and he was a little silly to think that she would have. He never apologized to her for being so rude, and basically if I want to see what he has I can go to his site... He does not have to post it here to see it. Now, take this in the spirit it was written, I just got tired of seeing my cousin and others categorized as an idiot. Mary Ellis CC Alamance Co., NCGENWEB Site "David L. To set the record straight, I never called anyone anything. Many people sent me emails with viruses, and I sent them back the simple statement "you sent me a virus" To the first two people who sent me a virus, before I knew this was so widespread, I did send the following statement: "You sent me a virus. How inconsiderate." to one of them and "You sent me a virus. How rude." to the other person. This was more of a joke than a rebuke, which I thought better of and changed later. Exactly those words. Your cousin must have been one of those two. She immediately began sending me long, scathing emails. I simply responded to one of them by saying "Please remove me from your address book, it is infected." I was never crass or obnoxious. Please tell your cousin I apologize for my part in the exchange. Also, I don't recall anything resembling an apology from your cousin. I don't know what all has been said about me on this list since I unsubscribed, but that is my side of the story. Since so many people have emailed me asking me to come back to the Orange list, I will gladly. I still have much more research to do here and share. I hope we can get on with the business (&pleasure) of genealogy. -Mark Murphy Mary Ellis wrote: > > Look all, I don't want to start a flame war or anything... Hi Mary, Thanks for writing the explanation. I appreciate the spirit with which you wrote your message! It can be frustrating to everyone involved. People should *not* be mistreated. My apologies to your cousin for her treatment! Harmony should be the objective as maillist subscribers. Virii happen to the best of us. I once inadvertently picked up a virus a couple of years ago when the virus was embedded in the HTML at a website. It was new to me and everyone else at that time and the destruction to my computer was devastating. Virii are serious business! However, there are a few short-sighted people who do *not* appreciate Mark's efforts in regard to the information that he posted. I believe that is *who* is being referred to. Unappreciative people! What kind of maillist do you want? We lost Mark's information posts and the Message Board gateway due to a few short-sighted people. I'm interested in genealogy information about Orange Co., NC. With the gateway turned off, the NCOrange maillist is missing an opportunity to experience the message boards and make connections. Would you limit peoples opportunity to make a connection? I don't know about you but I use Ancestry/RootsWeb and the Internet to make connections. I subscribe to the NCOrange Mailing List and admin the NCOrange Message Boards. Many Message Boards are now gatewayed to the like Mailing List. The NCOrange Message Board is the *ONLY* Message Board that I admin that's gateway to like Mailing List has been rejected. Larry Noah admins the Mailing List and the gateway choice is his decision. This message is not meant to take opposition to anyone subscribed to this Mailing List and what they have expressed. I appreciate the opportunity to express my perception of the message board - maillist gateway system. Please read this message carefully and give it some thought with an open mind. I feel very strongly about the gateway. I am greatly disappointed! We lost the gateway due to a few people. The viewpoint expressed on the mailing list sounded short-sighted. Perhaps some of these queries were not very specific or well written and some may not have even been polite or on topic. I had noticed a decrease in the quality of posts that had been gatewayed to the lists. More posts like, "I am looking for John Smith who had a daughter Susan." There is indeed a difference in the RootsWeb and Ancestry cultures. RootsWeb has benefited from active and involved Mailing List & Message Board admins who are volunteers that are willing to put in the time to ensure the quality of the list & board content. They are willing to educate the users on how to write a query to get results. There is scads of information on how to do this, but sometimes people just need to have it placed beneath their nose or for someone to take them under their wing and help them learn. Everyone was new once --nobody is born knowing everything. If someone has enough enthusiasm to post in the first place, then they can learn...and be taught. Gently -- the way friends are made." I don't want anyone to have hurt feelings. Can we fix it? Yes we can! Change is always more difficult to adapt to than the status quo. We are dealing with a vast cross section of the genealogical community, from beginners to scholars. Many of these people are new to genealogy and the Internet. That is what the delete key is for. Of course there will be errors. People are only human! I feel that many people but not all people have learned how the message board gateway to maillist system works. But until new users understand how the system works there will be some insignificant messages as there already are on any maillist when replies are directed back to the list automatically or otherwise as in human error instances. Most people quickly learn but there will be a few that won't, just like anything else. However, everyone has to learn sometime and someway as you and I did about genealogy, computers, maillists, message boards, the Internet or whatever you wish to consider. There will always be something new to learn! The message board posters that were referred to must be the people posting a query because all of the other classifications of the message board system are of data that is being posted for your information. Please take a minute to *contemplate!* *ALL* of the classifications but *one* are of *DATA* that is being posted for *YOUR INFORMATION.* Of course a lot of the early posts are queries and they will remain but if people like you give the system a chance and *contribute,* then as time goes on a larger percentage of posts will be of *information.* The new message board classifications are Bible, Biography, Birth, Cemetery, Census, Death, Deed, Immigration, Lookup, Marriage, Military, Obituary, Pension, Will & Query and the boards also allow you to post graphics, pictures and gedcoms. You haven't even given the gateway an opportunity! A lot of this information or potential information isn't or won't be available anywhere else on the Internet. This information and its availability is *priceless.* The biggest reason that I like the gateway is the *results* that I have received called connections or information. Isn't that really the bottom line? Isn't that why we are online? I think you will also find that many people using the message boards don't know about the maillist. There is now language on the message board explaining to the poster that their post is gatewayed to the maillist, if the message board has a gateway. Otherwise, the maillist is not mentioned. My experience has been that once message board posters learn of the maillist they subscribe to the maillist. Remember also, the new message boards expose the NCOrange maillist to Ancestry users and additionally the competitions people. People that you otherwise might not ever encounter. One of those people might very well have the information or hold the *key* to the *brick wall* that you have been trying to solve for years. It has been my experience that a maillist will grow and become more sophisticated with the addition of the gateway. My personal experience is that gatewayed messages help mailing lists enormously by helping people make connections. As a NCOrange maillist subscriber I can share my personal circumstances with you. My time is limited as are other peoples. I have obtained a great deal of information on my family history and would like to share it with others. If I have to choose between one medium or the other the message boards are going to win because your post gets greater exposure for a longer period of time. My hope would be to make one post that goes to the message boards that is gatewayed to the maillist that gets archived. You've heard the old expression of killing two birds with one stone. This provides maximum exposure to make connections and simply enhances the maillist. I had been waiting for the NCOrange gateway to make such posts since I prefer to avoid making a choice. However, my choice had thus far been to not post. You can't send graphics, pictures or gedcoms thru a mailing list but the new message board - maillist gateway system notification will notify you of these items when posted to the message boards and you will then be able to go to the message board and download these items. The Ancestry/RootsWeb message board to mailing list gateway system was new and is being improved but it has a few wrinkles that need to be ironed out. If people will just be patient. If we can all work together for the benefit of Everyone, I feel that the new Message board system will someday become something that we are ALL very proud of and wouldn't think of doing without! Just my 2 cents... I apologize for the length of this message. Harmony should be the objective as maillist subscribers. Genealogy has been and still is a passion for me. It has been my experience that a maillist will grow and become more sophisticated with the addition of the gateway, that helps mailing lists enormously by helping people make connections. Just my thoughts. Thanks for listening. I hope this information helps you! You may now have a new perception of the message board - maillist gateway system after reading the enclosed information. Once again, I hope this information helps you. :-)) Thanks again, Mike ************************* Michael G.
