    3. Indenture means that the mother entered into a contract for couples to take the children and raise them to a specified age, usually age 18. You might hear it also referred to as "apprenticed out." The children usually had to perform some type of work as a part of the contract. Often, it didn't work out very well, and the children were often treated quite differently to bio children in the family. In many cases though, at least some of the children were placed with other family members, grandfather, uncles, or older brothers. Those were days when the men owned everything, even the children. When a man died, the county required the children to be apprenticed out, or indentured, so there would be some kind of assurance that the county would not have to support the children. The children were considered to be orphans, even though their mother was alive and willing and able to care for them. Most of the court minutes regarding such indentures list the children to be "orphans of ______". 1. [NCORANGE] Indentured / BOUND OUT
    2. Francie Lane
    3. I agree with Betty's description of "orphaned" children; however, another term frequently used was for children to be "bound out". Below is an example, which I posted several years ago to NC USGenWeb archives, and you'll see the child was only 6 years old: =================== Transcribed by Francie Lane flane@otn.net from LDS film #0019707 Rockingham Co., NC Deed Book F, page 158 This Indenture made this 10th day of August in the year of our Lord 1799 between ELIZABETH BUNCH of the County of Henry and State of Virginia of the one part, and PETER HUNTER of Rockingham, State of North Carolina of the other part - Witnesseth that the said Elizabeth Bunch doe bind & by these presents have bounded WILEY BUNCH, a child of the said Elizabeth Bunch unto the said Peter Hunter to serve him the said Peter Hunter his heirs or assigns to the age of 21 years, and the said Peter Hunter covenant grant to & with the said Elizabeth Bunch and her assigns that the said Peter Hunter will find & provide for the said child during his said servitude sufficient drink, washing, clothing & lodging, teach or cause him to be taught to read and to instruct him in the Christian religion and to learn the said Wylie Bunch plantation business. The said Wylie Bunch was born December the 24th 1792, as witness my hand the day & year first above written. Elizabeth (her X mark) BUNCH Sealed & Delivered in the presence of: Zachariah KING John (his X mark) HUNTER
