    1. Re: [NCORANGE] Allens/vincents in Orange County
    2. In a message dated 2/9/01 2:05:51 PM, [email protected] writes: << Dear Jan, I think the Zachariah Allen you're talking about was a preacher, although, I understand there are several Zachariah Allens. Our ancestor, William Vincent b. 1779, kept a journal that included records of church services in Granville Co. NC 1799 until 1805. Zachariah preached a service or two about then there. (Granville and Orange were adjacent and once the same place.) I have forgotten the subject and date without looking it up, but will do so. Am attempting at present to transcribe the journal (it's very old and diffficult)in the hope that it may have some names that might help someone locate the presence of some of their ancestors in this place.(southern portion of Granville co. NC on the Tar River above the Trading Path, Beaver Dam Creek, Fishing Creek, Cedar Creek, and Tar Swamp) Apparently these church services were called the "Monthly Society" and held in each others homes. William listed the date, whose home, and subject of the sermon, in addition to recording other religious items such as a "Letter from King George" the king purported to be "a letter from Jesus," religious superstitions of the day, and several hymns. Apparently some of these preachers were neighbors, lay persons, and traveling preachers. Will be forwarding portions of the journal as I transcribe it on the [email protected] pages very soon if you would like to sign up temporarily. (Seems many of these families that settled there came originally from Bertie, Northampton counties, NC, and before that, Surry co VA, Brunswick co, VA, and Greensville co VA.) (I also found Zachariah Allen (jr. Sr.?) in Davidson co TN early 1800's census if memory serves) if that might give you some clues. (this is adjacent to the TN counties our vincents removed to in early 1800's) One of our Vincents married an Allen in Granville co NC, but I don't know which Allen. She was the daughter of Jacob Vincent. Regards, Judith Vinson >> Hello Judith, By any chance, were your Vincents/Vinsons in any connected to Westmoreland County, VA, and especially to the Cox, Rust, or Harrison families there. I have a Harrison who settled finally in Granville County, NC, who had Rust and Cox connections, and often used the given name of Vinson or Vincent, which I believe to be a family name originally. I also have a Dunkin connection as well, which may have interconnected with the Vinson/Vincent family. Best regards, John Fox Winston Salem, NC
