    1. [NCORANGE] Workman - Smith connection

    3. I am trying to make a Workman and Smith connection. My great grandfather, Sydney Young Workman was born in 1851 in Orange Co. In 1870 he was a laborer on the farm of R.H. Smith in Harnett Co. He subsequently married Randal Smith's sister, Emmiline, daughter of Calvin Smith and Dicey Jones. Sydney and Emmiline lived the rest of their lives in Harnett Co. There is a listing of a "Young" Workman as the son of James and Mary Workman in the 1860 Orange Co. census. Marriage records show a James Workman married Nancy Walker in 1838. This couple also had a son John who married a Mary Smith in Orange Co. This Mary Smith may have been the older sister of Emmiline. In reviewing the various censuses "Young Workman appears only once with his birth family, 1860. Sydney, the same age as "Young" shows up in 1870 with R.H. Smith and in 1880 with Emmiline and their older children. He and Emmiline died about 1895 of yellow fever so show up in no other censuses. Does anyone have materials on any connection of John B. Workman with the Smith family? Herman Kleine
