I found this at NewspaperArchives.com Mary Ellis The North Carolina Standard: Wednesday, Feb. 20, 1861 UNION MEETING IN ORANGE COUNTY. The citizens of Orange held a Union meeting at A. B. Gunter's, Esq., on the 6th instant. The meeting was organized by calling C. M. Herndon to the Chair, and appointing A. B. Gunter Secretary. On motion, Prof. R. W. York rose and explained the object of the meeting. He stated that there was a great and important crisis upon our country, one affecting the continuation of that unity of government which constitutes us one people, and that whereas this has been thrown directly into the hands of the people, by calling a State Convention, it was time for the people to decide what course they will pursue; that all party feuds should be obliterated, and that we should all rally as one man to the Union and Constitution. On motion, the Chairman appointed A. M. Herndon, Hardy Massey, and A. B. Gunter to draft resolutions for the meeting. When the committee had retired, Prof. York addressed the meeting. We regret that we are not able to give the whole of his speech, but suffice it to say, that it was both eloquent and patriotic. The committee on resolutions returned and reported the following resolutions: WHEREAS, A great and important crisis has come upon our country—one affecting the continuation of that unity of government which constitutes us one people, demanding the prompt and decisive action of the people; and WHEREAS this has been thrown directly into the hands of the people, by the calling of a State Convention, therefore Resolved, 1st. That we declare our sincere devotion to a constitutional Union, and will support no man for the Convention who is not pledged to exhaust all honorable means to preserve the Union. Resolved, 2d. That we arc opposed to secession for existing circumstances. Resolved, 3d. That we heartily endorse the Crittenden resolutions as a basis for the settlement of tho present difficulties. Resolved, 4th. That we favor the calling of a county convention to select Union candidates to represent this county, and recommend as suitable candidates the names of Hon. William A. Graham and S. F. Phillips. Resolved, 5th. That the Chairman appoint ten delegates to represent this district, whenever said Convention is called; whereupon the Chairman appointed the following gentlemen: Hardy Massey, Simpson Barbee, Chesley, P. Blalock, Anderson W. Pope, M. C. Herndon, Sen., James G. Harward, A. M. Herndon, Henderson Harward, Thomas R. Shepard, and John Markham. On motion, the Chairman and Secretary were added to the list. Resolved, 6th. That a copy of the proceedings of this meeting be sent to the Hillsboro Recorder, Raleigh Standard and Register, with a request to publish the same. On motion, the meeting adjourned.
