John, thank you for your reply and for making me aware of Childsville. I have just started looking at these families when they were in Orange County. You have made me look at this differently - we assumed the McKeralls were from NC from the beginning but that's not true. After looking at birth dates and the Childs, we are wrong. Frances McKerall Childs and her children came to Orange County with her 2nd husband, Mr. Francis Childs. Wow, what a twist. This should keep me busy for several weekends. Is it possible that he moved to Orange because he already had family there? Unknown McKerall, from Scotland was lost at sea. Left wife, Frances and son John and daughter, Frances. There could be other children. John McKerall, b. 1771 in Norfolk, Virginia moved to Orange County NC with his mother and her 2nd husband, Francis Childs. Mr. Childs died around 1789. John McKerall is an attorney and recorder in the county. I have seen his name on wills as a witness. John McKerall and wife Lorena, had son, William McKerall b. 1824. After attending West Point, and serving in War with Mexico, he is in Waco Texas by 1850's as a lawyer. After his first wife, Susan Sedberry died in 1866, he marries Mary Roan Danforth Campbell and moves to her home in Strafford, Greene County Missouri. I would love to exchange information with any of you who research the McKeralls or Childs from Orange County NC.
