This is a marvelous resource. It tells you the closest library possessing your book. Thank you Martha. This is most public libraries, many college libraries and some genealogical/historical society libraries. The site is WorldCat [OCLC)] http://www.worldcat.org/ Use the search engine to search for a specific title or author or subject. A search for William D. Bennett gave a list of books he had written. Click on the desired book title and it will give a list of libraries that hold that book. If you enter your zip code, it will even sort the libraries by distance from your home. For example: I searched on William D. Bennett and got 1629 hits for William Bennett even though I had specified the middle initial D. I refined the search specifically for William D. Bennett and got 37 hits--a manageble number. I chose "Orange County Records" and got a list of 72 libraries that hold that title, the nearest of which is 66 miles from my home. This has helped me find lots of books. I now keep a list of books and their locations. When I travel, I know what libraries I need to visit!! Happy searching. Martha
To all listers When you reply to a message in the digest, please just send back that one message with your reply on top. Please do not send back the whole digest. It makes for much duplicate reading the way many of you are doing it. I think you can see that you are doing this if you look at the bottom of your message and see all the contact information. A John Reed married an Eliza Tate in Orange Co. NC in 1787, and I can't get further information. They must have moved on. FROM A LOOKUP VOLUNTEER: I found two John Reed's in Orange County NC land grants, don't know if they are the same person. I also found a will abstract for a John Reed, 1782 that lists the persons, Lydia, Rebecca and Jamieson. Then an indexed will for a: John Reed 073 c1786 WB-B/35 AR. 073 is the Orange County Code, WB-B is will book B, /35 is the page number, AR means it's at the NC state archives. I'm not sure if these men are the same John Reed or not, but there are only two Reed wills for Orange County, the other being: Samuel Reed 073 1769 WB-A/102 AR In Samuel's abstract the only person listed is wife Mary. Just in case you're interested, here are all the Tate indexed wills: Tate, Abner 073 1841 WB-F/101 AR Tate, George 073 1774 WB-A/144 Tate, James 073 1838 WB-F/8 AR Tate, James 073 1816 WB-D/459 AR Tate, Jennet 073 1786 WB-A/359 AR Tate, Joseph 073 WB-E/153 Tare, Thomas 073 1841 WB-F/100 AR Tate, William 073 1828 WB-E/153 AR Tate, Zephariah 073 1816 WB-D/461 AR Abstracts: 1774 Tate, George, wife, James, George, Ketturah, Agnes, Mary, Elizabeth, Lettice, Janet, Margaret. 1798 Tate, Zaccheus, John, Jean, Lydia, Eudoxia, Zaccheus, Valentine, Uriah, Zephaniah, Uzziah, Zues, Sampson. (I'm sure Zephaniah is actually Zephariah) Betty Pace

Well, I am indeed glad to hear that they finally have all 19 volumes of the Bennett series on Orange County Records, for the benefit of the current genealogy patrons. A few years ago, I drove from two hours away to visit that history room, so I could find the rest of that series, and I was very disappointed at the time. Hillsborough has quite a history, and it deserves a better history room, so I hope they are enlarging that collection. Perhaps William Bennett or someone else donated the rest of his series to them. Frankly, I think Hillsborough deserves a new library building, too. I wonder if there are plans in the works for that? Wake Co. maps- deeds http://web.co.wake.nc.us/RDeeds/maps/maps.htm contains an index to the Markham Maps. I don't know whether I got this web site from the Orange or Wake Co. mailing list. However, I expected Wake plat maps. Instead the index was labeled Orange Co. NC. It is in PDF (always difficult for me to navigate) but some of you may be able to do better. You can see the alphabetical index, but how you get from the index # to the actual plat is a puzzle to me. Betty Pace
I got this from an English mailing list but it may apply to American works also: Downloadable books -- out of print The site address is as below http://www.archive.org/index.php I got the book site and typed in genealogy and searched in the American Libraries category and got the following list of genealogy books available. I wonder if Heritage Quest would have the Orange Co. books by William Bennett. I have never had much success in finding things on the book portion of Heritage Quest, but other people do better than me. You might have to search for specific volumes: Orange County Records; William D. Our non-profit, Hidden Voices, is conducting oral interviews in the Northside (Pottersville) and Pine Knolls neighborhoods of Chapel Hill. We're very interested in finding out more about the history of these traditionally African-American neighborhoods, as well as these geographic areas pre-1900s. If anyone has specific suggestions, we would be most grateful. thanks, Lynden Phillip Rogers <p2rogers@msn.com> wrote: Does anyone on the list know if a plot map of Chapel Hill from around 1801 is available for sale.
