I am inc. all in a book I am in the process of attempting to publish but will share with you now. Send me your email address. When not serving as light cavalry for their perspective warring kingdoms, the border reiver clans were a notorious mafia of blackmailers and cattle thieves. The worst were hanged in 1603 when King James became monarch of both kingdoms. The rest were offered a second chance to live by accepting transportation to Northern Ireland to "convert", by influence or by force, the remaining Catholic Ulstermen who had survived the last war of 1598-1607 with the English. I would highly recommend anyone of Scotch-Irish heritage to read George MacDonald Frazier's "The Steel Bonnets" and "Albion's Seed" by David Hackett Fischer.
I recently saw in a book about gunsmiths a diagram of regional immmigration pathways . It showed that many of the immigrants to the Piedmont east of Salem, NC came from Tidewater VA through Halifax, NC by an eastern route. I have also read recent accounts of Continental soldiers en route from Washington's northern army 1779-1780 and Cornwallis' route from Wilmington to Yorktown in 1781. Both groups followed east-west routes that passed through Halifax and crossed the Roanoke river at the same fords & bridges. This might explain those British immigrants who do not seem to fit the Great Wagon Road pattern of immigration from PA to Salem. It must be remembered that an estimated 250,000 emigrated from Northern Ireland to America from 1717-1775.

My Armstrongs followed the same route, and I recall the name of a place in Northern Ireland named Fermanagh. They migrated from the Scot/English borderlands, and it seems that many of the border Clans also migrated to Northern Ireland. The first of my line came to America in 1737, settling first in PA, and about 1750, they migrated to the area that is today's Hillsborough, NC. I suspect that our David Porter may have been part of the group mentioned below. Can you suggest any resources for me to search for him among this group? By 1777 he was definitely in Caswell Co., NC as there are many records, including his death 1-15-1795, but where he was before then is a great mystery. We think he was born about 1734 in Ireland. His son, Alexander, is said to have been born 1-7-1755 in Halifax, NC and was a Rev. War Capt from Salisburg Dist. All thoughts and suggestions appreciated!! Any male members of the NCORANGE site with Patriot ancestry should be aware that there is a newly reconstituted General Francis Nash Chapter of the NC Society, Sons of the American Revolution in Durham & Orange County. Meeting sites rotate but are usually the second Thursday of even-numbered months, the next on June 14 (Flag Day), 2007. We encourage potential new members to join. Also, see our website at www.ncssar.org. click on the Chapters links and then on Genl. F.Nash on the NC map. Alex Long, RN GFN chapter VP
Thomas Wilson (1729-1829) married Jane Wood (1761-1859). Their daughter Elizabeth Wilson (1791-1854) married Soloman Latta in 1814. All of the above resided in Orange County. Another Presbyterian Church in Orange County is Little River Presbyterian, founded 1761 and located in present-day Caldwell, NC. Also, there are Wood and Woods families in my Orange County FTM file. The Woods married into the Halls, McKees and Allisons. The Woods were from County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, a Presbyterian enclave.

A bk. by Hays which seems to have disappeared from the Durham, NC gene. room, listed "my" John Wilson, founder along with Mathew McCauley, of Damascus Congregational Church in Orange, as being a son of James Wilson who m. Ann Latta. Any clue will be greatly appreciated. One grandchild of (my) John, a Tripp surname as I recall, was named Blumer, or similar. There WAS a Wilson family in Chatham who lived near the Wake Co. line with Blumer/Bloomer connection, and also near John's wfs. Edmond Browder father. The Latta Family did have members of their family in Orange County NC. Below is a transcribed list of Latta Males from th Grooms Book in Orange County. You also forgot to mention Little River Presbyterian Church which id located in the exact area where these Latta's lived. Descendants still live there. I am related to the Wilson's and Woods and to the Latta's by marriage. It has been stated in several places that there were North Ireland Scots who came to America as a group and first settled in Lancaster, PA area and then moved South to the Orange County area of NC around 1740-1750 time frame. These were Calvinists/Presbyterians and established the Old Eno Presbyterian Church, Stoney Creek Presbyterian Church and later Hawfields and Cross Roads Presbyterian churches. I am not an expert in this field and have no evidence to prove this but would not discount out of hand the possibility that the LATTA family was not a part of this group. Perhaps some of the other participants in this list serve will have pointers to source material for this era and family groups.
