Betty, I don't see these specific names in the index but this book just hits the high spots regarding surnames. There aren't any genealogical references at all. I think the books which index the actions of the people in particular will be your best bet...wills, estate settlements/inventories/land transactions, etc. but sounds like you have already checked them out. I guess you've checked Rootsweb to see if someone has the same descent as yours, not they are necessarily correct, but could contain clues. My ancestors left Orange County sometime after 1800 and before they appeared on a tax list in Grainger County TN in 1807. My 5th g-grandfather, James ROACH died in Orange County NC Feb-May 1792, and his widow married a John READING or REDDING in 1797 or 1798. I have found no trace of either of them since they sold her dower. The widow, Ann, may have been the daughter of Samuel THOMPSON. I cannot find his will, and perhaps there wasn't a legitimate one. After Henry O'DANIEL demanded that the will be produced in court, no further mention has been found. Before Ann married John Reading/Redding, she indentured all of her children except the two oldest in Orange and Person Counties. I have those documents. James owned 182 acres of land at the headwaters of the Haw River. His mother was alive and living with him when he died, but he does not mention her by name. She may have been an ASHCRAFT. Carl, I found a Mary Simpson, age 38, son, Josiah age 7 and daughter, Levina, age 5, living just a few doors away from Henry Garrison and family. Included in the inventory of Henry Garrison's family was Nancy Hurdle Garrison age 64, widow of George Garrison, sister to Jacob Outlaw Hurdle. I am not able to tell if this Mary Simpson is the widow of your Henry Simpson or not. Can you provide me something more about the Adams family? Henry was said to be born ca 1815, and died young in 1845, and I find Josiah and his younger sister living with a female Adams in the 1850 census in Alamance County. Since Henry married Mary Adams, this is not surprising, but I would love to specifically prove Henry to be Josiah's father. I can not for the life of me tie my Simpsons to the Caswell County line, but it would sure be nice if I could...Also, I would like to prove that Henry was a son of Luke Simpson, of Orange/Alamance... Hurdle mentioned as bondsman for the marriage of Mary Adams and Henry Simpson, was Jacob Outlaw Hurdle. Jacob was married to Laura Eunice Boswell, whose parents were John Boswell and Catherine Simpson. Since Catherine Simpson was closely alligned with the Simpsons of Caswell County, we can assume that Henry had similar relationships in Caswell. The Simpsons of Caswell had their origins in Scotland, and in Stafford County, VA prior to settling into Caswell. Jacob Outlaw Hurdle was a son of Hardy Hurdle of Gates County, NC, and his second wife, Christian Outlaw of the same area. I would be interested in discussing your ties to the Adams/McAdams families. I have not been able to get very far with these names, and would appreciate hearing from anyone with information to share. My Samuel Simpson arrived in Orange County ca 1796, was a schoolmaster, Revolutionary War veteran, and I have a grerat deal of information about his immediate family, but need to go further. Henry may have been his grandson, but I can't prove it.... Carl Shumaker AOL now offers free email to everyone. Betty, The book is about Orange Co., not genealogy per se...the origin of the county, all the churches, when founded and by whom, etc. The author, Lefler, taught history at UNC, and also wrote a bk. called North Carolina. There are names and photos in both but just the movers and shakers. Pg. 15, the abstract I sent, is all that there is about German settlers in Orange Co. I am trying to make a Workman and Smith connection. My great grandfather, Sydney Young Workman was born in 1851 in Orange Co. In 1870 he was a laborer on the farm of R.H. Smith in Harnett Co. He subsequently married Randal Smith's sister, Emmiline, daughter of Calvin Smith and Dicey Jones. Sydney and Emmiline lived the rest of their lives in Harnett Co. There is a listing of a "Young" Workman as the son of James and Mary Workman in the 1860 Orange Co. census. Marriage records show a James Workman married Nancy Walker in 1838. This couple also had a son John who married a Mary Smith in Orange Co. This Mary Smith may have been the older sister of Emmiline. In reviewing the various censuses "Young Workman appears only once with his birth family, 1860. Sydney, the same age as "Young" shows up in 1870 with R.H. Smith and in 1880 with Emmiline and their older children. He and Emmiline died about 1895 of yellow fever so show up in no other censuses. Does anyone have materials on any connection of John B. Workman with the Smith family? Herman Kleine
Thanks John, Interestingly enough, Henry Simpson's son was named Josiah Hurdle Simpson. My Samuel Simpson arrived in Orange County ca 1796, was a schoolmaster, Revolutionary War veteran, and I have a grerat deal of information about his immediate family, but need to go further. Henry may have been his grandson, but I can't prove it.... I'm glad that you enjoyed this website, I also found this very interesting reading. My 6th great grandfather Johannes Adam was an early German settler in Rowan County, NC, he was the first potter in the state of North Carolina. What a wonderful website. Thank you so much for sending it. I have only explored one small part of it, but was so happy to read the letters from the Out of Print Book Section in Christoph von Graffenried's Account of the Founding of New Bern, and the Copies of Various Letters from North Carolina. These letters were written at the same time my husband's 6th great grandfather was living there. His name was Jacob Wismer (Wismoore, Wismore &. Vismore). He was in New Bern by 1711 and probably arrived in 1710. Alamance County was officially proclaimed a county in April of 1849. The boundary to the north finds Caswell County, south is Chatham Co unty, and west is Guilford County. Few facts in Alamance history are more disputed than the origin of the name "Alamance". Although some sources claim that Alamance was named by early German immigrants who came here from the "Alemanni" region of the Rhineland, others claim that the Indians called the Alamance Creek by the Indian word "Amonsi" or "Alamons," which meant "noisy river" or by another word which meant "blue clay".
