    3. Carl, I, too am very interested in the Simpson line in Orange County now considered Alamance. My husband line starts with Lemeul Simpson born in 1796 and died in Alamance in 1881. He had many children. We are assuming Lemuel's father was Benjamin Swain Simpson whose father is Samuel Simpson of whom you are talking about. We have not been able to prove the Benjamin Swain connection to Lemeul and would love to know more. Please let me know what connections if any you might have. Thank you Shauna Simpson ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carl Shumaker" <carls4603@insightbb.com> To: <ncorange@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 29, 2007 12:10 PM Subject: Re: [NCORANGE] Germans of Orange & Alamance > Linda, > > I have a marriage for bride Mary Adams and groom Henry Simpson, dated 7 > Oct > 1837, Orange County, with bondsman Jacob O. 3. There has been a lot of talk the last few days about the Cate/Cates. I thought I would add my line and see if it ties in or anyone has any info. The first few generations, I have not been fully able to verify. They were given to me by a cousin without any sources. I am still working on them. Generation 1 William Abraham Cate - born before 1846 and died after 1669 (possibly England for both). He married Margaret Agnes (--?--). Two known sons: Robert Ezra Cate and Richard Nehemiah Cate. Generation 2 Robert Ezra Cate born 1667 and died after 9 April 1728 in Surry County, Virginia. He married Ann A. (--?--). She was born abt 1672 and died after February 1729. They had 6 sons: Capt. Robert Cate, William Cate, Thomas Cate Sr., Benjamin Cate, John Cate, and Richard Cate. Generation 3 Capt. Robert Cate born abt. 1700 in Virginia and died after 5 Nov 1765 & by March 1767 in Orange County, North Carolina. He married Elizabeth Wyatt. They had 6 children: Thomas Cate, John Cates, Richard Cates, Sarah Cates, Joseph Cates, and Barnard Cates. Generation 4 (this is where I have most proven from) Thomas Cate born about 1730 and died abt 1817 in Newberry County, South Carolina. He married Elizabeth Fussell. They had 10 children: Thomas K. Cates, Robert Cates, Elizabeth Cates, Aaron Cates, Mary Cates, Isaiah Cates, Ezra Cates, Jehu Cates, Susannah Cate, and Nancy Ann Cate. Generation 5 Isaiah Cates born abt 1769 in Orange County, North Carolina and died Before 7 July 1806 in South Carolina. He married Jane O'Daniel on 10 Feb 1794 in Orange County, North Carolina. She was born abt 1767 and died 21 Oct 1850 in Orange County, North Carolina. Note: I have always seen that she died in Orange County, but she was enumerated on the 1850 census in the home of her daughter Susan in Lewis County, Tennessee. It is possible that she returned home after the census and died that year. Generation 6 Susanna "Susan" Cates born 1805 in South Carolina and died 15 May 1875 in Maury County, Tennessee. She married Sandy Duke who was born between 1801 and 1810 and died before 1850 in Maury County, Tennessee. Sandy Duke is a complete mystery to me almost. I have always heard things about him, and know that the city of Sandy Hook in Maury County was supposed to have been named after him. As to what his name really was I have no idea. I think he came from Orange County to Maury County, but cannot tie him to any other Dukes. My best theory is that his real name was William Alexander Duke and they called him Sandy, but I can't prove that. That theory is based on the fact that a grandson (William Alexander Lindsey) was said through family tradition to be named after a grandfather. He is the most likely one. I also know that Sandy was sometimes a nickname for Alexander. The other part of the theory is that Sandy & Susan had one son and they named him William. Thier children were: 1) Nancy M. Duke who married David W. Johnson 2) Elizabeth A. Duke 3) Martha Jane Duke who married John S. Lindsey (my 3rd Great Grandparents) 4) William G. Duke who married Nancy McFall 5) Mary E. Duke who married Anderson N. Gibson 6) Sarah Adeline Duke who married Perrin M. Wright Jr. All these families lived in the Lewis County & Maury County areas of Tennessee and still have many descendants here. They lived in neighborhoods with many other families who came from Orange County: the Craigs, the Pickards, the Stockards, the Williams, the Lindseys, etc.

    1. [NCORANGE] Sara C. Allen
    2. I am trying to identify a Sara C. Allen whose 1847 sampler was passed down to me from my Great-grandmother, Francis Hall Berry. It was removed from the home of William A. Hunley (1872-1936) and his wife Eugenia Noble Allen (1869-1937). Both are buried at Berry's Grove Baptist Church in Timberlake. Buried nearby is Sallie Allen (1878-1899), wife of Chas (not buried with her). William was the son of Sam Hunley & Mary Ann Berry. Eugenia was the daughter of Nelson Noble and Mary Allen. I presume there is some relationship between Sallie Allen, Mary Allen, and Sara C. Allen. I would like to establish the sampler-maker's identity and also determine what, if any, relationship there is between Sara and my Berry or other lines, which would make this artifact a family heirloom, not just an antique. 1. [NCORANGE] Indentured / BOUND OUT
    2. Francie Lane
    3. I agree with Betty's description of "orphaned" children; however, another term frequently used was for children to be "bound out". Below is an example, which I posted several years ago to NC USGenWeb archives, and you'll see the child was only 6 years old: =================== Transcribed by Francie Lane flane@otn.net from LDS film #0019707 Rockingham Co., NC Deed Book F, page 158 This Indenture made this 10th day of August in the year of our Lord 1799 between ELIZABETH BUNCH of the County of Henry and State of Virginia of the one part, and PETER HUNTER of Rockingham, State of North Carolina of the other part - Witnesseth that the said Elizabeth Bunch doe bind & by these presents have bounded WILEY BUNCH, a child of the said Elizabeth Bunch unto the said Peter Hunter to serve him the said Peter Hunter his heirs or assigns to the age of 21 years, and the said Peter Hunter covenant grant to & with the said Elizabeth Bunch and her assigns that the said Peter Hunter will find & provide for the said child during his said servitude sufficient drink, washing, clothing & lodging, teach or cause him to be taught to read and to instruct him in the Christian religion and to learn the said Wylie Bunch plantation business. The said Wylie Bunch was born December the 24th 1792, as witness my hand the day & year first above written. 3. Indenture means that the mother entered into a contract for couples to take the children and raise them to a specified age, usually age 18. You might hear it also referred to as "apprenticed out." The children usually had to perform some type of work as a part of the contract. Often, it didn't work out very well, and the children were often treated quite differently to bio children in the family. In many cases though, at least some of the children were placed with other family members, grandfather, uncles, or older brothers. Those were days when the men owned everything, even the children. When a man died, the county required the children to be apprenticed out, or indentured, so there would be some kind of assurance that the county would not have to support the children. The children were considered to be orphans, even though their mother was alive and willing and able to care for them. Most of the court minutes regarding such indentures list the children to be "orphans of ______". 3. there is a gentleman, (cant recall if I met him on this list) that is researching Cates who has done extensive research on his Cates line from the same area I believe that we are researching. Most of my information on them comes from him. I will dig out all my notes later this week and list some Cates I have info on. And if you would like will connect you with the researcher. Indenture date 21 February 1798, Orange County NC. On the same day, the mother, Ann, indentured Elizabeth's siblings, James, Jr, Nancy and Drury. Prior to this date, Ann had twice indentured William, and also John Green. 1. [NCORANGE] Renn/Wrenn Cousins
    2. Hello benjib2, I am not a descendant of the Wrenns you have posted although I do consider them cousins. I am working on the earlier generations of the family, and could perhaps help you with some of that. James Carraway Wrenn, Sr. was a son of Wiliam Warren Wrenn and his second wife, Jeanette Pleasant. I believe William Warren to be a younger brother of my ancestor, Sidney Wrenn, and son of James Wrenn and Mary Hamlin. It would appear that William Warren Wrenn's first wife, Leatha Hamlin, was most likely a cousin. Listed in the Census of 1840 with just him and his wife in the household. He is listed on page 286; John and Joseph Wrenn are listed on page 290; and Sidney Wrenn is listed on page 291. The 1850 Census listed William and wife, Leathy, ages 38 and 37 with their two sons. All were listed as having been born in North Carolina. The 1860 Census listed William and second wife, Jannet, ages 48 and 27, sons George and James, and the children of William and Jannett. All were listed as having been born in North Carolina. In the Census of 1880, William Warren stated that both of his parents had been born in Virginia, indicating that James Wrenn and Mary Hamlin were recently of Virginia when they were married in Person County, NC.
