    3. Thanks. I tried them all using susan or susannah and nothing panned out. I have a feeling both Harriet and Suckey were illegitimate. They are shown living next to Betsy Vaughn in the 1850 census with a Mary Ann Vaughn who also has children. Lucky me. 3. Nancy Brister has been a great county coordinator for Orange County GenWeb. I could not even begin to say how much I personally appreciate the hard work she has done for us. I wish her luck and have no doubt that her work on the Old New Orleans site will continue to be more successful than she ever thought it would be. In my opinion she is very very good at coordinating and web page designing. You will be missed Nancy. 2. Nancy
    3. (I apologize if this has come through already---I lost my connection to the internet as I was sending and I don't find it in my "Sent" folder!) Hi everyone, I have been struggling with some decisions for a long while and I've finally reached a conclusion just this morning. It's with a great deal of regret that I give up my duties as county coordinator of Orange County GenWeb. I've known that I haven't had the time available to do justice to the site for some time now, but I kept hoping that would change, so I waited "another month" and then "another." But I've come to realize that it isn't fair to the county to continue to hold on to the site, when someone else could take over and give it the attention it so deserves. However, as you can tell, it hasn't been an easy decision for me. I've been involved in many GenWeb and Rootsweb duties for a long, long while and, of course, my own genealogy work, as well. But all of those things have taken a backseat to the work I've been doing on various projects concerning my native city of New Orleans, since the levee failures and resulting flood almost destroyed it two years ago. One of those projects, my Old New Orleans site, has grown steadily until it's way beyond anything I could have imagined when I first started it. And, besides the growth in number of visitors, it's become much more than just a website, both for me and for many who visit. In a small way, it's become a source of healing for many who still grieve over what has happened to a city we hold so dear. It has, also, turned out to be what I hoped (only on a bigger scale than I foresaw!) and that is a platform to educate visitors about the city's history and culture. With the large number of people the site now reaches, I feel as though it would be wrong not to use the surprising opportunity with which I've been blessed to devote the biggest portion of my time and energy to it. I will be giving up my Pearl River, MS GenWeb county, as well; and other of my personal and genealogy projects, so that I can devote myself to Old New Orleans. I hope that, one day, I'll be able to return to the GenWeb family and begin, again, to help with work that means a great deal to me. It's been a joy to work with so many dedicated Orange County researchers over the past few years. Your help, encouragement and enthusiasm has been appreciated more than you know. If you're interested in becoming county coordinator, contact Denise at nc@usgenweb.org . Sincerely, Nancy Brister Nancy http://www.thepastwhispers.com/Old_New_Orleans.html

    3. I am looking for TAYLOR family connections in Orange County, NC. Thomas TAYLOR born 1748 married Martha LNU abt 1770. She was born 1749. First land grant to Thomas Taylor in Granville Co., NC shows he entered that grant 15 Oct 1778. It was granted 3 Sept 1779. In 1784, Thomas sold a parcel of their land in Orange Co., NC to William Shepherd. In Mar 1785, he sold another portion to James Stockard. On 20 July 1785, Thomas and Martha sold 188 1/2 acres on the Eno River to William Shepherd. About this time, court records show that Thomas moved from the County of Orange. His parents could be James and Frances Taylor who arrived in Orange Co., NC in 1748 from Chester Co., PA. James Taylor was a Quaker. James had a brother, Robert Taylor who also moved to Orange Co. My Thomas and Martha moved out of Orange Co., NC in August of 1785. They had ten children, six of whom were born in Orange Co., NC. The rest were born in Davidson Co., TN where they settled, lived, died and are buried. Thanks for any help. 1. [NCORANGE] Fw: Civil War -- Life in NC (Salisbury & NC Piedmont)
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. I heard an interview with author Joanna C. Scott on NC TV (UNCTV--Book Watch) recently. The author of a novel explained how she researched her book, explaning how she uncovered many facts (as background) about race relations and social conditions during the Civil War in Piedmont NC. I found the book at my local library. I can't say that this is a great novel but I found it interesting in the historical detail about social conditions and race relations, especially since a large portion takes place in Salisbury, where much of my family lived during the Civil War. It was not a pleasant time there with many shortages and the townspeople torn between pro-war and abolitionist factions in the late stages of the Civil War. It also touches on Chapel Hill, Gold Hill and the gold mine, and a little on Greensboro. In case you do not like fiction, you might want to read these pages about life in Salisbury itself. pp. 167-167; 221-227; 250-261; 270-279; 295-303 General readers might want to read the whole book, which I found interesting. Whether you want to trust the historical research, it is up to you--as is true with any work of history, whether fiction or non-fiction.
