All this discussion and exchange is very helpful to everyone. Might I suggest that the family names and/or locations of interest be used in the Subject line so that readers are alerted to the content and don't have to open every email. That being said, my husband's family goes back to JOHN ANDERSON COLE along the Eno River. I would appreciate any help in determining which COLE was his father, and what the family relationship to the ANDERSONs was. Thanks. Frances Farmer Alexander In a message dated 3/19/2008 3:43:44 P.M. Hi, I am a new member and would be interested in a couple of names. 1. Cate/Cates; I did a search on the 1790 Census in No. Carolina and came up with Cate = 10 Cates = 16 That seems like quite a few people for Orange county to have one surname. We have found that most people weren't fussy about adding or subtracting the "s" , and that members of the same family often spelled it differently. By 1800 there were only 2 with the Cate spelling but 20 with the Cates spelling. All in Hillsborough, Orange, NC. I just thought it was unusual to have that many people with that name at that period of time in the same area unless they are related and then they must have been a prolific family. Does anyone know any thing about this surname? 2. Ming/Minge Samuel, Joseph, William, all names that show up in the family I am researching. I think these are the Ming/Minge family that came into NC from the West Indies. I am pretty sure they were in Chowan County before Orange county. In the 1790 census there are @ 6-8 in Chowan but by the 1800 there is only one left and the only one in Orange is Joseph. Does anyone know where the others went? The family looks like this William Joseph Ming married to Martha Elizabeth Cope. If the naming pattern holds true and what I have seen on the internet about the family holds true then William Joseph's father was the Joseph of Orange County in the 1800 census. And there we stop. Now the big question is 2 of Martha Elizabeth Cope's brothers married women with the surname of Ming, Rachel Martha and Elizabeth. Were these siblings of William Joseph or some other relation? Always questions in this hobby aren't there. Any help appreciated. Kathleen (Cates) Rose
I am researcing James ROACH, died Orange County NC in February 1792. His wife's name was Ann (perhaps) THOMPSON. James' property is now located in Alamance County. He was my 5th g-grandfather. I descend through his oldest son, Absalom, who married Mary MIDDLETON. The widow, Ann, married a John READING/REDDING in 1798, and promptly disappered. I have not been able to find her or John anywhere since their marriage. James' oldest daughter, Elleanor/Ellender, married a RAY. I haven't found much prior to James' death, and nothing on Mary Middleton. I don't know who James' parents were, and I don't know who Ann's parents were. I have been stuck here for about 20 years. Any little shred of information will be greatly appreciated. If anyone needs help with research in Texas, particularly in Travis, Hays, and Caldwell Counties, I'll be glad to help you if I can Betty Roach Braune Austin TX Mary: Sharp and Sykes are also names I know. Lou: Do you have Mebane's around Lockhart, Caldwell County, Texas? Dear Lou; How far back do you have family members documented? Where exactly do your questions about specific individuals and their ancestry begin? I have a fair amount of information on Mebanes, Craigs, etc. and might be able to help, but give me some specific names and dates from which to begin, please. These families are connected to my Wallaces and Woods, and other families in my late mother's ancestry. Cecilia L.
