    1. [NCORANGE] Southard - HELP!
    2. Katherine Reece
    3. I haven't posted in awhile. I am searching for the parents of Green W. Southard born abt. 1811. He may have come from Orange County. A tree at ancestry.com suggests that but I've never been able to get any sort of proof from the person who posted the tree. If there are any Southard researchers or people with a Southard tie-in somewhere up their line please check their databases for this most elusive ancestor of mine. Any help or suggestions welcome. Green moved to Georgia by 1840 and was recorded in the 1840 census as Green Sutherland. All census records, probate, and death records after 1840 record him as Southard. We do not know what the W is for but he did have two sons with "W" names, William and Wesley. 1850 Census says he was born in VA 1860 and 1870 says he was born in NC Death certificate in 1875 does not record a birthplace. The man could not be more annoying! http://www.katscelticroots.com/fam00156.htm That is his page at my genealogy website. Thank you, Katherine Southard-Reece

Some libraries have a subscription to HQ. HQ has books and census records online. You have to use the computers at the library or get a login from your librarian to use at home. When I did a search for Orange County NC, several books came up. When I looked at some of my names, what was written was Bill of Sale type information. I would offer to do lookups for you but I work and just don't have the time. Check with your local library to see if they have a subscription to Heritage Quest. Sandra Van Wyk Texas

    3. John, thank you for your reply and for making me aware of Childsville. I have just started looking at these families when they were in Orange County. You have made me look at this differently - we assumed the McKeralls were from NC from the beginning but that's not true. After looking at birth dates and the Childs, we are wrong. Frances McKerall Childs and her children came to Orange County with her 2nd husband, Mr. Francis Childs. Wow, what a twist. This should keep me busy for several weekends. He died between 1830 and 1840, but I do not know his burial site. John and Elizabeth had 10 children: Johnson Mary Ann Nancy James Rebecca William Alexander Alfred David John William married Jane Thompson, daughter of John Thompson and Jane Alexander. She was the widow of George Johnston. William and Jane migrated to Arkansas in 1848. Some of her Johnston children went with them, but stopped in west Tennessee. Alfred Russell also migrated to Arkansas. There was another John Russell family in Orange County at the same time and the two families have often been confused. They had similar names for their children (God bless those Scots-Irish naming patterns!) and both intermarried with the Thompsons. I would love to find the parents of my original immigrant, John Russell. Sue Russell

    3. I'm researching James Downin/ing) who was in Orange Co. prior to 1754 (date of first land record) to his death prior to 1771. Known descendants were William and James Downing, and likely Josiah Downing. James and Josiah migrated to South Carolina. Although the Downings lived in the midst of a Quaker community on Cane Creek, I've not been able to find any record which shows him to be a Quaker. I do know that he was Scotch-Irish. He probably migrated into Orange Co. with at least one other family and so I'm interested in hearing about neighboring families who are known to have come into Orange Co. prior to 1754 -- when they came, where they came from, etc. Lois Olmstead -----Original Message----- From: ncorange-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ncorange-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Anggie Thompson Sent: Wednesday, March 19, 2008 11:13 AM To: ncorange@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NCORANGE] New Members I, too, am searching Murray and Wrenn as well as Cook, Kernodle, Barber, McIntyre, Summers among many others, but those are the ones I'm working on right now.
