    1. BASTIN, ATWELL, NUNN, BROCKMAN Query
    2. Gary Bastin
    3. Looking for any information on Thomas and Hannah (BROCKMAN) BASTIN. They settled in the area near modern-day Pellham, Caswell County, NC, which is on the border of Caswell County and Rockingham County, sometime around the time Caswell County was formed from Orange County. Their son, Thomas BASTIN married an ATWELL. It is believed that Thomas and Hannah married in either Orange County, or perhaps across the state line in Pittsylvania County, VA. Long searches for marriage records from the mid to late 1700's for them have been fruitless. They were members of the Lick Fork Primitive Baptist church. Thomas (Sr.) died in Jan 1817; Hannah in Oct 1834. Thomas BASTIN, the son, born in 1783, migrated to Barren County, KY around 1830. He died in 1858. Have lots of information on descendants; looking for any information on possible parents of Thomas Bastin (the father), as well as ATWELL family information. Website on the descendants is located at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/9714/ and it includes over 2,200 individuals, and over 500 surnames. Related families include NUNN and BROCKMAN, also residents of Orange, and subsequently, either Caswell County or Person County after the split-off dates. What has led me to this group is the lack of information on these two relatives of mine, John and Sarah Cook of Orange Co. NC. They are my ggggggrandparents. My cousin and I have been trying to find out more about them. We know that they had a son named Edward Netty Cook, born March 22, 1760, and he was married to Anne Thomas Feb 4, 1785. He is buried in Cleveland Co. NC. And we have alot of info from his line onward, but no more on his parents. 2. Larry Noah
    3. I have been asked if queries are allowed here. They are welcome as long as the people have connection to the geographical area covered in this list. Queries are part of genealogical research. The thing that will be discouraged is replies to queries about individuals. Most of the time those replies should be by PRIVATE email - NOT to the list. It would be helpful if you make your subject in this format: "ALBRIGHT,CLAPP query" listing only the surname(s) and the word query on the subject line. That way people can easily skip the message if they have no knowledge of the surname. It is also helpful to put all surnames in the body of your message in UPPER CASE. The best place for queries in the NCGenWeb county pages. Links to all NC county pages can be found at: http://www.goldenbranches.com/nc-state/counties.html. There is also a link to "unknown county" on this page. -- Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list See my Ancestors at - http://www.trailerpark.com/tango/lrnoah Gedcoms & other data are at - http://members.tripod.com/~lrnoah Florence Co,SC GenWeb - http://www.rootsweb.com/~scfloren Orange Co, NC GenWeb - http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange USGenWeb Orange Co, NC Archives site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/orangnc.htm

Elijah is shown to buying land in Randolph Co in 1800 but there is another man named James Murray that was buying land in Randolph Co. in 1795. I wonder if this James is the father? Any information on the Murray's would greatly be appreciated. I know that there are more Murray's in Randolph Co after the Elijah left the county in 1817. 2. Larry Noah
    3. OK, people you can do more than just post queries. I would like anyone who will to post a brief (one or two paragraph) summary of the beginnings of any of the churches in colonial Orange County. There are those of you who have accumulated this information in your research. Now you can share it with others. My example follows. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE BRICK REFORMED CHURCH OF GUILFORD COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA The beginning of the Brick Church dates back to the mid 1740's when George Valentine Clapp (and later his brother John Ludwig Clapp) came to the Beaver Creek area of North Carolina from Pennsylvania. It became a regularly organized church in 1770. The church in early days was known as Church on Beaver Creek or The Clapp Church (Der Klapp Kirche). It was known as The Clapp Church until about 1813 when a brick building was constructed. It is located about three miles from where the Battle of Alamance was fought. It is still an active church. The Brick Church (as the Clapp family) was German Reformed. The difference between German Reformed and Lutheran was not extensive. For a while they shared a building with the Lutherans who later formed Low's Church. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list See my Ancestors at - http://www.trailerpark.com/tango/lrnoah Gedcoms are at - http://members.tripod.com/~lrnoah ALBRIGHT, ALEXANDER, ASKINS, BELK, CLAPP, COURTNEY, CROSSWELL, FOUST, KELLER, MIXON, MOSER, NEASE, NOAH, PILKINGTON, SHARP, WATSON, WOODHAM, WYATT & more, mainly in NC and SC ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list County Coordinator Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange

    1. Early History of Orange County, Part II
    2. Larry Noah
    3. The Scotch were said to have been most prevelant in Cumberland County, but there were some that settled in southern Orange in the area that is now Chatham County. "Germans held the land west of the Haw River". There were Lutherans and German Reformed. Ludwig CLAPP had a grant of 640 acres on the Alamance. Michael HOLT had large acreage along the Great and Little Alamance. John FAUST had land on Cain Creek. Adam TROLINGER had land on the west bank of the Haw River, near the present railroad crossing. Other German pioneers were Christian FAUST, Jacob ALBRIGHT, Peter SHARP, Philip SNOTHERLY and David EFLAND. Quoting from the book: "By 1773 there were so many Germans in western Orange that J.F.D. SMYTHE, an English traveler, experienced difficulty in finding anyone who understood his language in some areas west of Hillsboro." English immigrants from VA settled in northern Orange along the Hico River and County Line Creek. There was a settlement of Irish near Stoney Creek in what is now Alamance County. The Welsh, including Thomas LLOYD settled between Hillsborough and what is now Chatham County. Quakers were very prominent in early Orange County. There were some north of Hillsborough. There were more in the Cain Creek and Stinking Quarter Creek areas that are now part of Alamance, Chatham and Randolph. Two prominent Quaker pioneers were Jonathan LINDLEY of the Cain Creek section and William COURTNEY of Hillsborough.. That sums up most of what I know about the early settlers. There is much more information in the book that I can summarize if there is an interest. I do not own the book, but if I could find it, I would buy it. -- Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list See my Ancestors at - http://www.trailerpark.com/tango/lrnoah Gedcoms are at - http://members.tripod.com/~lrnoah ALBRIGHT, ALEXANDER, ASKINS, BELK, CLAPP, COURTNEY, CROSSWELL, FOUST, KELLER, MIXON, MOSER, NEASE, NOAH, PILKINGTON, SHARP, WATSON, WOODHAM, WYATT & more, mainly in NC and SC ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list County Coordinator Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange

    1. Early History of Orange County, Part I
    2. Larry Noah
    3. It is often helpful in our genealogical research to know a little about the geography and history of the area that we are researching. I will try to briefly summarize some early history of Orange County, NC. The source of my information is "Orange County - 1752-1952" edited by Hugh Lefler and Paul Wager, published in 1953. There were few white families in the 1740's in the area that was to become Orange County. But, by 1751 Governor Gabriel JOHNSTON reported that settlers were flocking in, mostly from PA. At the time it was formed Orange County had an estimated population of 4,000. By 1767 it had the largest population of any county in NC. The migration along the "Great Wagon Road" from PA through Shenandoah valley to Carolina was made up largely of Scotch-Irish and German immigrants. "Scotch-Irish" is the term used in the reference book. German refers to the area that was later to become Germany. The most distinctly Scotch-Irish settlement in the county was Eno, abut 7 miles north of Hillsborough. They also settled in the area east of the Haw river adn in the Little river and New Hope creek sections. The Scotch-Irish in what is now Guilford County organized Buffalo Presbyterian Church in 1756. Information on Germans and others will follow. -- Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list See my Ancestors at - http://www.trailerpark.com/tango/lrnoah Gedcoms are at - http://members.tripod.com/~lrnoah ALBRIGHT, ALEXANDER, ASKINS, BELK, CLAPP, COURTNEY, CROSSWELL, FOUST, KELLER, MIXON, MOSER, NEASE, NOAH, PILKINGTON, SHARP, WATSON, WOODHAM, WYATT & more, mainly in NC and SC ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list County Coordinator Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange
