There were a large number of German families that settled in the western part of Orange County in the mid 1700's. Many of these came from the PA German settlement. Others came from Germanna in VA. Still others came from the northeast. The PA group was led by George Valentine CLAPP and his brother John Ludwig CLAPP. The Germanna group is believed to have been led by Michael HOLT. Some of the names of these early German settlers include: ALBRECHT/ALBRIGHT, BASON, KLAPP/CLAPP, EPHLAND/EFLAND, FAUST/FOUST, GERHARD, GOERTNER/COURTNER/CURTNER, GRAFF/GRAVES, HOLT/HOLD, KIMBRO/KIMBROUGH, LEINBERGER/LINEBERRY, LONG, LOY, MAY, MOSER, NEASE/NEESE/NEESE, RICH/RIDGE, SCHADE/SHADDIE, SCHEAFER/SHAVER/SHEPHERD, SCHWENCK/SWING, SHARP/SHAEBE, TROLLINGER, STEINER/STONER, WEITZEL/WHITESELL, There were others but this will give you an idea of the amount of Germans involved and a clue to some of the name variations. From its beginning Orange County was the home of farmers. It has been said that in 18th century Orange county more than 75% of the land owners owned between 100 and 500 acres. This was at a time that large land grants were common, but only 5% of the land owners had 1,000 acres or more. The three largest landowners in 1800 were William CAIN who had 4,417 acres, Richard BENNEHAN with 4,065 acres, and William STRUDWICK with 4,000. By 1860 77% of the land owners had 100 acres or less with only about 1% having 1,000 acres or more. ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange USGenWeb Orange Co, NC Archives site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/orangnc.htm

We all learn that there is usually no one way to spell the names of our ancestors. This is especially true in the area of old Orange County where there were may non-English speaking immigrants. Quite often names will be spelled as they are pronounced (accent and all). We must also remember that many English speaking immigrants did not read or write so there will be variations with them as well. There is really no rule of thumb on spellings such as KIMBRO begin German and KIMBROUGH being English as I once thought. We really need to investigate any possible spelling variations. ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange GENDEX at http://www.gendex.com/gendex/ has over 1400 databases on line
Hello To All; Am doing research on all Killion/Killian in the Orange county area of NC. From the Orange County Deed Book 1, there is a Nathaniel Killyen who was a witness to a land deed between Zachariah Martin and Thomas Mathews dated 30 July 1755. Does anyone have any info on this Nathaniel if he was a Killion/Killian? Also a John Killion and his father Michael were in the Revolutionary War. Both fought together.Michael was killed. John died in Surry county in 1816. Also a Jacob Killion was in the Revolutionary War from Orange county. The time frame I am interested in is between 1755 and 1820. I would be so thankful to anyone who is willing to share any information .TIA Wayne Milam wmilam@internetpro.net ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange GENDEX at http://www.gendex.com/gendex/ has over 1400 databases on line

Recent clues have led my search to the Battle of Alamance in NC in 1771 - I have vague recollections of a LYON man being tried in the courts after the battle between Gov. Tryon and the militia and the Regulators, primarily of Orange County. If any kind soul has a resource book giving a list of those participating in the battle, or abstracts of the court cases after, etc., I would greatly appreciate a check to see if any LYON folks are listed. I suppose I should say 'on either side', but I recall him being tried as a purported Regulator. Should no one on the list have such a resource, I would be interested in hearing where I should direct my research - anyone know of any good sources of information regarding the participants in this conflict??? Hi, I am interested in information about the Bowling family of Bowling Mtn. (now Red Mtn.) near Rougemont, N.C.. According to records I have received the John Bowling that settled there was B. about 1755 and is said to be the son of John Bolling and Mary Jefferson. The John Bowling of Bowling Mtn. supposedly married Nancy Mangum (sp) and is a descendant of Robert Bolling the emigrant. Another source I have information from said that John Bowling was born in Maryland. Some of my research results show many Bowlings/Bollings in that area of the state. I have a John Bolin B. abt. 1755 in Va. and settled in York Co., S.C. on the NC/SC line in 1796 I am researching and am very interested in all Bollings etc.. I am back from my vacation. It seems that all on this list took a vacation at the same time. I have much that I can share about researching genealogy in the area that was originally Orange County. But there is so much others can share, also. Tomorrow I will begin to post information that I have gathered in my research. Most of it will be about the Germanic speaking settlers of Orange County. They are my ancestors. I have very little information on the other settlers. It is up to someone else to help. Without input from others we might as well call this an "ALBRIGHT/CLAPP/FOUST/NOAH/SHARP" list.
