    3. Larry - Who is Marc Nozell, and what is his objective? As a member of other rootsweb Mail Lists as well, I feel that this is the ONE thing that can destroy a worthwhile project that has been meaningful to many. Obstruction or destruction of the free exchange of personal information on a genealogy mail list would be inherent in such an endeavor. IF he has already embarked on such a project, and IF he is in any way affiliated with Rootsweb, this should be made known to all their mail Lists. What has he already done? Please keep us informed. Concerned for the continuation of Mail Lists and for the confidence that they inspire in the usage of postings. 1. William BOLES
    2. BEVERLY J BOLES
    3. Hi to all, I'm hoping someone on the list might have some information on the BOLES family. I am trying to find the parents or birthplace of William BOLES/BOWLES who was born abt 1785. William married in Madison County, KY. to Elizabeth GUMM, 1807. Elizabeth was born in KY., and her father, William GUMM was born in N.C. The bondsman for William was John SNETHEN. I have quite a bit of information on the BOLES family that was in Stokes County, but have been unable to find a family for William. If anyone knows anything about any of these folks, please contact me, and I'll be glad to share what I have on the Boles/Bowles family. 3. A "must have" book for someone researching the above surname is "The Hoffmans of North Carolina" by Max Ellis Hoffman. The following is taken from an email message dated 4 April 1997 so may be out of date. I have not had any contact with Ms. Hoffman and do not know if the revision has been published or any of the original book are still left. I will say that the one we have is well worth $11.00. > > The book "The Hoffmans in North Carolina" by Max Ellis Hoffman was >published in 1938. The book is still available, but NOT from the address in the book. Dr. Faust has since deceased and the location in the book was his office has since burned down. 1. John Walker Scotland-NC and Phillip Walker NC
    2. DAVID WALKER
    3. I am working on the assumption that my Phillip Walker, Jr is the son of Phillip Walker Sr. of Orange County NC. and this Phillip Walker Sr. was the son of John Walker, however I will be the first to admit that there are a lot of unknowns in this thinking, but this is the information I have to date. Thanks to Lin and many other along the way. I would like to hear from any of you..... David Walker ------------------------------- John Walker Born 1736, Scotland; ..Died 02 December 1809, Orange, NC Married 1756 in Orange Co. NC to Nancy Ashford. Nancy Ashford, Born 1739 NC and Died 1798, Orange County, NC Captain of First North Carolina Regiment, 1 September 1775 Lt. Col and Aide-de-Camp to General Washington, 17 February 1777 Major, 26 April 1777 Source: Abstract of his pension record. Notes from: John Fox (Wiston-Salem, NC) and Lin Van Buren (Saint Leonard’s on Sea, England) They believe Nancy Ashford to be the daughter of William Ashford who settled in Caswell County in the late 1700’s William Ashford’s wife is not know and could have been a daughter of Alexander Mebane who organized several wagon trains of settlers to the Orange County area in the mid-1700’s from Pennsylvania. Their ancestor John Graham was married to Frances Mebrane of Alexander Mebane’s family, and secondly to Mary Bird, daughter of James Bird and his wife Mary Ashford. James and Mary Bird’s eldest son Empson, provides brides for some of the sons of John Walker. They believe that John Walker and his family were in Pennsylvania, prehaps in the Chester County part prior to their arrival in North Carolina. The Walkers then prehaps came down with one of Alexander Mebanes’s caravans. John Walker and Nancy Ashford may have been married in PA or VA. 3. Carol - You hit the nail on the head. I, too, am a mixture of German (PA Mennonites, Lutherans, etc), plus Quakers, plus Scotch-Irish (maiden name Stephenson) & that's all just on my father's side. My mother's side are the New Enlanders. On top of that I married a Guenther (who's parents came from Germany in the 1920s). "Everything tidy & in its place" is SOOOOOOO true. I tease my husband (39 yrs) all the time about that trait of his. Of course it's really handy when it comes to finding things around the house! My GIFFORDS (Quakers) were in Orange Co in the late 1700s until abt 1815 when a large group went to Orange Co IN. Levi GIFFORD (according to minutes of Cane Creek) was b in MA & son of Peleg & Abigail. He marr Margaret WELLS 9m 1789 (Cane Creek MM) who was the dau of Joseph & Charity WELLS. I have an abstract of Joseph WELLS will in which he names Margret Gifford & his other children which I can post for other Wells descendents. I have many other Orange & Guilford Co relatives, KIRK, CROUSE, KERSEY, HIATT, WILLIAMS CARTER, etc. Carol - have you found any WELLS or CROUSE (or any variant spelling) in your Quaker notes. I have no proof that the CROUSE were Quakers. Sarah has a marr bond in Guilford Co to marry Eli KERSEY in 1826. They went on to IN w/ other Quakers & she is listed as becoming a member in IN in 1840 but, of course, she may have belonged before. 3. As usual the source of the following information is the book ""Orange County - 1752-1952". Orange county originally included the present day Orange, Chatham, Caswell, Person and Alamance. There were also portions of Durham, Wake, Guilford, Rockingham, Randolph, and Lee. Wake was formed in 1770 from portions of Orange, Johnston and Cumberland to have a new county that would make it easier for the inhabitants to attend the courts, general musters and other public meetings. Guilford was formed in 1770 from Orange and Rowan "in order to separate the 'Insurgents' during the government trouble with the regulators." The original portion of Orange that went to Guilford included what in 1785 became the eastern portion of Rockingham. Chatham was formed from southern Orange in 1771 during the Regulator uprising to encourage its inhabitants in the public duties. The northern boundary was 16 miles south of Hillsboro. Chatham county included territory that in 1779 became the eastern part of Randolph. The residents in the northern part of Orange began trying for a new county as early as 1770 because they found attendance at the general muster and courts "very burdensome". Finally in 1777, Caswell county was formed with the dividing line between Caswell and Orange running 12 miles north of Hillsboro. Eastern Caswell was organized as Person in 1792. For more than a decade there were citizens trying to form a new county in the western portion of what was left of Orange. At the time the western portion was largely industrial and the eastern portion largely agricultural. Finally in 1849 Alamance county was formed from the western part of Orange. The dividing line ran 9 miles west of Hillsboro. Following the Civil War there was one more change in the size of Orange county. Durham had become a center of the tobacco industry. Hillsboro landowners apparently had very little interest in tobacco. Durham was formed from Orange and Wake in 1881. This left Orange a small county of only 398 square miles, its present size.
