    2. Larry Noah
    3. Thanks for all response to the question on the archives. It has been largely in favor. I will continue to participate. There have been some concerns raised and I will try to address them in other posts. One of the concerns is that the archives are open to the public. Some may not realize it, but this list is open to the public. Anyone can subscribe and read any message on the list. Subscribers are not screened. I am working on "guidelines" for this or any other "public" mailing list. These will be posted soon. By "guidelines", I mean what I would follow myself on any list. These will not be rules. By "public" list, I mean any list that someone can subscribe to without screening. Of course, it is all in vain if nobody writes a message. Come on, folks! This is the only place that I know of to share and compare information about this the glorious Orange county as it was originally formed. 1. ARCHIVES
    2. Archive the material.... Two years when no one is addressing the first love of a new mailing list, there will be a little newbe like me that can access the archives and learn from what has already been written. What would we have done if Mrs> Peters would have written her book and put in a safe for safe keeping. What if no one would have translated some of the state records, what if our freedoms are suddenly taken away from us and we are no longer allowed to enter our archives....Or to be in my situtation where not that many people are interested, in searching my main Surname. It is easy to do a genealogy where all the books have been witten, but what about poor little Sarah that was forgotten to be added to someone list and she is the one you are looking for... Just don't write something you are ashamed of. Some time it is nice to look back after a year of doing this and seeing your own personal growth, not only in thought, but in your presation . You may be the only one in the world that has that one clue one piece of spelling that can change someone else to get them on the right track. I am sending this to the group and not personal mail to Larry , I can write Larry privately any time. This is a group decision. So present your ideas to the group, without flaming or anger but as a normal discussion which is what we are suppose to be doing. 3. I have had very little input on the experimental archive site. Maybe you did not see it the first time around. Here is the message again below. The intent is for the users/listmembers to ge able to access messages that they have not saved. So far I have heard of two types of objections. One is from listowners who think that the archives will decrease their subscribers. The other is from member who are concerned that their email address is on a web site. I need your input. Otherwise, I will make the decision on whether we participate in the final project. Thanks for your help and support. ********************************************************** Marc Nozell has started a major project to archive the messages in the rootsweb mailing lists. This is new and still in the "beta test" stage. I would ask each of you to go to the site and tell me what you think of the project. At this time you should go to the main site and follow the links since he is still working on setting it up. The site to go to is http://lists.rootsweb.com/~archiver/. My opinion is that it is a good thing. However, your opinion is what counts. 1. Primitive Baptist, BASTIN, BROCKMAN Query
    2. Gary Bastin
    3. Looking for any info on Thomas BASTIN/BASTON (b.~1745, d. Jan 1817) m. Hannah BROCKMAN. Thomas is believed by some to have been born in Brunswick Co VA, or, if after the split-off date,in Halifax Co VA, which eventually became Pittsylvania Co VA. He also may have been from Albermarle Co, VA, or may have only lived there for a while. At any rate, he moved from VA to just across the state line into what is now the far NW corner of Caswell Co, NC near modern day Pelham (i.e., effectively Anson Co, NC til 1763, officially Orange Co NC 1752-1777, & Caswell Co after 1777). In NC, he was associated w/both the Lick Fork & Country Line Primitive Baptist Churches, both of which were closely tied with the Primitive Baptist Churches a few miles away in Pittsylvania Co VA. Thomas and Hannah married circa 1769-1770. Does anyone know how to find marriage records for the Primitive Baptists in Orange Co, NC in this time frame? It appears that the Baptists were not officially recognized in this era, and regularly performed marriages without official approval from government authority. (Thomas and Hannah Bastin are both believed to have been descended from English Emigrants in Virginia. The BASTIAN/BOSTIAN family from Rowan Co, NC in this same era was of German extraction.) Thanks! 2. Does anyone out there have any info on Brittain DRAKE (not Albrittain)? Brittain was a son of Richard DRAKE of Southampton, VA. He and his brothers Francis, Matthew, Richard and John moved to Chatham Co, NC where he died in 1785/6. He died intestate, but according to his brother's will, he had a daughter, Margaret and according to a deed I recently discovered, he had a son, George. I am trying to prove the theory that this George is my 3Ggrandfather. His mother Polly UNK remarried shortly after being widowed. She married Joseph MINOR and that is the household where George was most likely raised. If any of you have anything on George or Brittain, please let me know. Thanks! 1. Graff/Graves
    2. Jacob Graff.... b.1691 d.1772 Phil. M.18 July 1718 Huffelsheim Maria Phillipina Stoormer b.16 April 1693 bap.23 April 1693 Nordner, norheim Ehrenburg, in what is called Germany today. d. 29 May 1764, Nordner Norheim Ehrenburg, She was the daughter of Herman and Susanna Stormer. Jacob and family came to America in 1741 on the ship "Molly" His age was 60 years old, son Casper 22, and son John 16. Jacobs wife and younger children not shown on ships list. Martin Graef, age 29 came on same ship but records say he was "not the son ". A deed dated 22 March 1775, to David Frishmet, a Phildelphia baker, names 5 children. 1. Casper Graff b. 1719 Huffelsheim d. 1787 Philadelphia M. 1 Oct 1745 CAthrina Elizabeth Baurin 2. John Graff b 1725 m.MARIA MAGDALEN FUCHS 3. Jacob Graff died before 10 December 1781Philadelphia Married 18 September 1750 Anna Cathrina Ablelin 4.Maria Philipina but signed her name Phebe Graff Married >>>>>CHRYSTLER was a widow by 1775 5. Matthias Graff was listed as younger. I believe that the John Graff that married Maria Magdalen Fucks is the father of John Jacob b. March 8 1746 REASONS 1. They named there first born son after the Father of John which would fit into German naming Patterns. 2. John Jacob Graff & Katherine would have been John Jacob Graff and Catherine who appear to be the brother and sister-in -law would have been the sponcers of the child which would also have fit into the German naming and baptism record of the times. 2. John Graff and wife Sebastion b. October 1 1747 would also fit the naming pattern and time span. Sebastion Graff was the sponcer of this child and I cannot identify him but I do believe that John Graff and his wife Maria Magdalen Fucks named him after this Sebastion. The english equlifant would have been "Bostain" . Thus John Sebastion (Boston-Bastion) Graff. 3. I also believe that Maria Phillipina Graff was the daughter of John or Johannes and his wife Maria Magadlen were also the parents. Once again we see the same pattern in all of the above birth. The name always remains the same it is either John or Johannes and Maria Magadlina , which is sometime shorten to mean Mary. This child could have been named after the Mother Maria Phillipina Stoner. She is the one that died in Germany. I have never seen a child that was going to be called by his middle name called John John Graff(example) if John was going to be called by that name they would name Him Johannes Graff with no accompting middle name. It would also fit into the Salisbury N.C. District Court Min. of John Graves becoming a Naturalized citizen. How ever this is the only three children that have been given references to that appears to have all the things that we would consider "proof" that these are the children of John Graff. But if we except this information then we would have problems with the John Sebastion Graff who came on the Alexander and Ann. On the other hand it would make it more believeable that John Graves would be able to make the trip to Tennessee at a younger age , instead of the 103 and 104 keeping in mind that they did not go by covered wagaon but they walked in trails, not roads , in 1785-1800. My name is Patricia Ann Graves Reagan . I am related to the First Graves for three out of four, five, or six of his children and I would be the 9th generation. To me it is important to be able to prove as a Graff and Graves line once and for all, by working as a family. To be able to do it with a open mind. I also believe it is up to us as a family to determind who he is and not the Sharps. I love the sharps to and they are also my line through Sarah Sharp and the marriage of John Graves son of Turley Cobble and John Jacob Graff. According to PA church records Maria was born 15 Aug 1751 to Johannes & Maria Magdelen. The sponsors at her baptism were Jacob GRAEFF and wife Maria Phillipina. There were a number of Johannes (John) GRAFF's (etc) that were in PA and later were in Orange Co, NC. One source says Maria's father was Johannes Sebastian Graff. Regardless of our personal opinions, Accolades and Sincere Appreciation to Larry, Helen Gant Donald ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange USGenWeb Orange Co, NC Archives site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/orangnc.htm

    1. MAZY Surname in France and NC
    2. Larry-Kristen
    3. I am still searching for information regarding a MAZY who traveled from France to New Orleans in the latter of 1718 on a ship title "La Dauphine". I am searching for information on the Surnames of MAZY, PAGE, and PATE. They were all around in the late 1700's to the mid 1850's in North Carolina, (in the Chatham Co. area) ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange USGenWeb Orange Co, NC Archives site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/orangnc.htm
