From: The Guilford Genealogist Vol 18, No 1 Fall 1990 by Nancy MAXWELL Revolutionary War pension applications show Andrew CARNAHAN was born on 11 June 1762 in Baltimore County, Maryland. The first record of his residence in North Carolina is State Grant No. 435 to Andrew and John CARNAHAN, dated 1 March 1780 for a tract of land containing six hundred and forty acres, lying and being in the county of Guilford on both sides of the Long Branch" In his pension application, Andrew CARNAHAN says that he continued to live in Guilford County one to two years once he was discharged from the army, after which time he moved to Davidson Co. TN. On 9 January 1783, he married Elisabeth, maiden name unknown. No marriage bond was found for this couple in Guilford Co., and the marriage may have taken place in TN. Andrew is on the 1787 Davidson Co. TN tax lists for 1787 with one taxable, and he was called for jury duty there in November 1790. Andrew CARNAHAN died 4 May 1839 in Rutherford County, TN Sarah CARNAHAN, widow of Andrew, applied for a widow's pension 19 March 1853. She had been totally blind since 1843. She received a certificate of pension 27 June 1855 and continued to receive Andrew's allotment of $44.66 annually. Her death date is unknown. The following is a list of Andrew and Elisabeth CARNAHAN'S children from a Bible page submitted with the pension application, the entries abstracted: Hugh CARNAHAN was born 6 April 1784 James CARNAHAN was born 18 December 1786 John CARNAHAN was born 18 March 1788 Thomas CARNAHAN was born 18 August 1790 Ann CARNAHAN was born 31 October 1792 Mary CARNAHAN was born 3 January 1795 For his second wife, Andrew CARNAHAN chose Sarah HILTON, born 6 November 1782, place unknown. Williamson, Tennessee records show a marriage bond for Andrew CARNCHAN and Sarah HELTON dated 5 February 1808. Bondsman were John CARNCHAN and Thomas Dave STEPHENS. The Bible record gives the date of marriage as 7 February 1808. No record of children has been found. ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange GENDEX at http://www.gendex.com/gendex/ has over 1400 databases on line

Who says genealogy has to be boring? No way! I found this in a May 1996 volume of The North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal. HEARTY CONGRATULATIONS (submitted by Jane Smith Hill, Winston Salem, NC) "John DAMM of Randolph County, who was married at Point Pleasant last week, was congratulated by the old folks, the telegram saying: "Please accept the congratulations of the whole DAMM family." Hello Rooters, Yesterday, I posted a list of orphans that were bound out to learn trades between the years 1781-1811, in Guilford County, NC. I failed to mention where this material came from and the years. They were abstracted from the Minutes of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, on microfilm #C.046.30001, obtained from the NC State Archives. Sorry about that mistake! Some Quakers surrendered to the pressures and passions of the time and did not take part in the REV War. Most of these were disowned by their meeting for violation of principles of Quakerism. Some of the disownments (really indictments) would say "taking up arms and appearing in a warlike manner", sometimes "taking affirmation to the present powers", one reads "hiring a man to go to war, and assisting to drive away his neighbor's cattle for the use of the army". Thanks so much for posting these, otherwise non-accessable, lists to the group. Being in California limits my "leg work", so to speak, and I appreciate all the helpful lists and databases I can find. The court system had one responsibility that took care of orphan children. When a parent died, the court would "bind out" the children to some responsible citizen of the community, who would feed, clothe, house, and educate them until they reached maturity, and teach them the trade of the benefactor. Then, they would be given the tools of their trade, a suit of clothes, and sometimes, a horse. Taken from the Guilford County court records. Since we have so many folks on the NC Orange List that are researching their German ancestors, thought I would send along this information.... Guilford County, NC by Fred Hughes Many of the Germans to settle in Guilford County were born in Germany, and came as children. By the time they came to Guilford County from Pennsylvania they were adults. They came as two religious groups-85% Lutheran, and 15% German Reformed. Supposedly, two families were Jewish but the documentation is very week. Being German nationals they became British by a process of naturalization. John NOTZ (Nutts) the schoolmaster, probably followed more or less the same pattern as everyone else in becoming a citizen. Johannes NOTZ arrived in Philadelphia 16 Oct 1751 on the ship Duke of Wirtenberg. Together with 166 other adult male passangers, he took three oaths of abjuration, and allegiance. Witnessed by his signature, this document still exists in Pennsylvania. 1..Oath of allegiance to George 11, the proprietor Penn, and the province. 2...Abjuration (solemn denial) of papal or Catholic influence. 3..Abjuration of the claims of the Stuarts (Jacobites) Twelve years later, in 1763 NOTZ bought land from McCULLOH. In the fall he went to Salisbury where he completed the process of naturalization, renouncing his German citizenship, swearing fealty to the crown and to this province, thereby becoming a British citizen. 22 March 1763 Salisbury Superior Court, Naturalized: John GRAVES, George FOGELMAN, Lodoweek SWING, Isaac CRESON, Peter NOE, Lodoweek CLAPP. Lodoweek ALBRIGHT, George INGLE, Anthony COBBLE, Peter POOR, Daniel MAY 22 December 1763 Salisbury Superior Court, Naturalized: George COBELL, Andrew RUDOLPH, John NOTT, Adam SMITH, Conrod LOWE, Malekiah FOGELMAN, Frederick SMITH, Jacob COBEL, Jacob HAMBLE, Phillip KIMES, Adam MOSER, Jacob BOON, David SPIKE, George Valentine CLAP, Adam COBEL, Joseph STAILEY, Frederick BROWN, Christian MORRIS, Malekiah ISLEY, Henry GARDNER Others were naturalized at these and other courts, these were listed because they were Guilford residents. ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange GENDEX at http://www.gendex.com/gendex/ has over 1400 databases on line

Seeking information about Elisha B. Copeland (b. 4/16/1834 Orange Co., NC, d. 5/9/1926, Pike Co., Indiana). Elisha married Elizabeth H. Doss on 3/4/1853. By the early 1860s he was in Indiana. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, T. There were a number of Orange County Germans naturalized in the Superior Court of Rowan County at Salisbury in the 1760's. My guess is that since these people lived in the western part of Orange that Salisbury was easier to get to and also probably friendlier (they spoke German?) than the Orange County courthouse at Hillsborough. I have a list and will try to get these names transcribe when I get a round tuit. There were also some Germans naturalized about the same time in Hillsborough, Orange Co. I do not have any list of these. There have been researchers that have claimed that some of these people who were naturalized in Rowan County were Irish. No one has ever answered this question. "If they were born in Ireland and in the British colony of North Carolina, why did they need to be naturalized?" I'm trying to find which son of Thomas & Hannah Bastin md. my Henrietta Ford. She was the daughter of Simeon Ford and Winnefred [Morgan] Ford. Don't know all the birthdates of Simeon and Winnefred's children, but they range about 1772 to around 1785. I know William md. Deborah Cook and Thomas, Jr. md. Mary W. Atwell. Does anyone know anything about this family? There is an interesting web site called "Triangle Roots" about the present day counties named above. The site was created by Matt Mielke and June Copeland, students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Martie Mullenbach, also a student at UNC-CH, is a genealogy buff and supplied much of the content that appears on the site. The site is at http://www.ils.unc.edu/familyhistory/roots.htm.
