    1. Aol mail server down Oct 29
    2. A BIG favor, please. AOL's mail server was down a majority of the day Oct 29. I have "spoken" to them this morning about the huge problem this causes with bounced mail and being unsub from lists, etc--probably it was in one ear and out the other, but I tried! If I've been unsub please let me know, and if some of you could resubmit yesterday's mail to either the list or me privately I would really appreciate it. 3. Hi, It's me again. I know everyone is probably getting tired of me posting...but I have another question. I know that the Orange County web page has 1790 to 1850 census records, and I am grateful for that. But does anyone know if there were census records taken before 1790, and how I could gain access to them? Thanks! 3. The automated query system for the USGenWeb counties is not working. If you have entered a query on any county page recently you should go to that county and see if the query was posted. I do not know if any queries were lost, but it is possible. My suggestion is to repost your query to the county coordinator if you original query was on the "autobot" and it does not appear within 7 - 10 days. For Orange County itself you can go to the queries page and post to the link there or email me at lrnoah@bigfoot.com. BE CERTAIN to make the subject "Orange Query" if using this email address. 3. Hi Group, I received a copy of an Orange Co deed that I believe may help me piece together some info about my ggggggrandfather, John Cook. John was married to Sarah, they had a son named Edward in 1760, in Orange County. But if this deed belongs to THE John that I am researching, then it shows he came from Sussex County VA. So I am checking out a few VA webpages. In the meantime, does anyone here have any information on the Henry Cook Jr. it mentions here? John may also have a brother, Nehemiah Cook, and may also be related to Archibald, Robert and David Cook. Any help would be appreciated. 1. Bain Research
    2. Hello: My name is Joan Bain. I am in Randleman, North Carolina. I am researching my husbands family. His father was killed when he was little and the family has not had any contact with the "Bain's" since the accident. I have little to go on. I have followed back through census to his g-g-grandfather. David C. Bain born in 1826. He was married to Frances Devinney in Guilford Co., North Carolina in 1848. I can not find his father or get any farther back. I think he had a brother named Joshua C. and W. C. They were listed living next door on census reports. I also suspect a sister named Mary who married a Reitzel. I have found the graves of JC, WC & Mary. There were not any listings on the tombstones of parents of any of the Bains. There was a Jonathan Bain Sr., aged 84 at death, buried along with Mary & husband. I can not find a wife or son for this Jonathan. He would have been much too old to have fathered these children. Does any of this match anything you have ran across in your research? Any information you have to match and share would be greatly appreciated. 3. Copied from: THE DURHAM-ORANGE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY NEWSLETTER-OCTOBER 1997 Duke University Action on Prospective Landfill Site Protects Historic Burial Site For several years the Town of Chapel Hill has been searching for a new landfill site to be used beginning about 2005. The most desirable site has been an area of Duke Forest adjacent to the present landfill off Eubanks Road on the north side of Chapel Hill (Duke Forest consists of large forest tracts scattered about Orange and Durham counties owned by Duke University). Now it has been discovered that Duke University has granted a renewable five-year easement to this property to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This apparently means that the town or county will not be able to use their powers of eminent domain to acquire the property for public use (The Chapel Hill News, October 12, 1997, p A1). On this property is the historic Hogan Homesite and Family Cemetery. The cemetery consists of the remains of two portions (one a corner) of a low dry-laid stone wall and inside that 25 to 30 fieldstones marking graves. There are no marked stones. The Hogan site was surveyed in February 1976 and is included in the Orange County Cemetery Survey, which refers to it as the Alexander Hogan cemetery. No specific burials are associated with the cemetery, but family tradition identifies it as the Hogan family burial site. Possibly in the same area are the remains of what is probably a large African-American burial ground. Mostly sunken graves and scattered stones indicate this area, which is not easy to identify as a burial site. The African-American cemetery site was the subject of an investigation in 1993 by a cultural anthropologist and students from Elon College (The Chapel Hill News, May 23, 1993, p. A1). Col. John Hogan was an earlier settler of Orange County and donated land for the establishment of the University of North Carolina. He also made bricks for construction of the university buildings. His grandson Alexander (1814-1870) eventually occupied his grandfather's property. ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - lrnoah@bigfoot.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Orange Co, NC USGenWeb site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange USGenWeb Orange Co, NC Archives site is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/orangnc.htm

    1. (Fwd) James Lewis Latham's ancestry!
    2. Don Latham
    3. Forwarded message: From: Self <Single-user mode> To: ALBIBB-l@rootsweb.com Subject: James Lewis Latham's ancestry! Reply-to: jdflex@teclink.net Date: Sat, 25 Oct 1997 20:37:04 Howdy fellow rooters! Pardon me for not calling any names; but this "generic" message is going out to 11 mailing lists all over the southeast! I am searching for the ancestry of James Lewis, (Louis), Latham b Oct 10, 1805. he married Nancy Jane Eustace b Jan 9, 1812, in 1828 somewhere! Here are the children of unknown birthplaces; Henry Jan 28, 1830, (killed returning home from Civil War); Adolphus Sept 22, 1831; Martha Nov 21, 1835; Catherine May 4, 1838; Mary Oct 30, 1841. These children are recorded in the old family bible but no places of birth are given! Now for the kids with birthplace listed as being all born in Alabama: James Louis Jr. May 28, 1843; Alfred May 21, 1846; Wyatt Dec 2, 1848; Nancy Jane Oct 14, 1852. All these AL relatives are documented and traced to MS in and around Webster County. Now comes the fun part! For years this man has been hidden as to his where-a-bouts before he came to MS. But I have found him. If you will notice; those kids born in AL were between the years 1843--1853. Aha! He must be on the AL Census of 1850. Aha! He is! He is listed as James Latham in Madison County AL! It has to be him cause he's the only James in AL on that census. Howbout the 1860 census? Yep! He's there too! This time listed as James LathEm in Marshall County township of Cottonville. We know that he moved to MS either just before or right after the Civil War. To be blunt: IT'S HIM!!! It has to be! There ain't no other James Latham's in AL durring that time period. And the birthplace of those kids comes from the old family bible! Both Madison and Marshall Counties are up in the northern most part of AL. So I'm thinking that he may have migrated out of VA, or TN. But I still think that he originally came fron NC. So there you have the great Latham puzzle. James Lewis Latham is NOT one of the Latham's in Bibb County AL, though he did pass through there on his way to Webster County MS. Here's another clue: He came over with Lawrence Latham married to Polly Smitherman who was a sister to Elizabeth Smitherman who was married to William Latham of Bibb County AL son of Cornelius Latham. He's easy to look up! Somehow they're related. Terri informed me that there is a deed up in Prince William County VA where a Cornelius and James Latham deeded land to a Chandler Spinks. Cornelius's wife, Mary Spinks signed the deed. So all you faithful rooters; I ask and implore all of you to go over the archives that you have so diligently colected through the years for the where-abouts and ancestry of James Lewis Lathem Sr. Bear in mind that the surname Latham has also been spelled Lathem, Lathen, and Lathan. I have even seen a Lathom! Eliteracy was rampant way back then! And check on that surname Eustace. I can't find any reference to it. You NC folks please look closely. As I stated at the beginning; I am posting this to all the lists that I am on. So if you get multiple copies; now you know why. Seriously folks; I don't have access to any of the really old records. Especially those from VA TN SC and NC. So I really would appreciate your help. Also; if you find that you may have relatines way down here in Webster County MS; Slip me a note and I'll surly see what I can dig up! I feel confident that somewhere in either VA, TN, GA, SC, or NC that someone has that little tidbit of info that will open the door that will allow me to find the parentage of this "lost Latham."
